Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2013,

PURPOSE: to assess the use of the digital caliper in the measurement of the facial mimic movements in different moments of the speech therapy. METHOD: prospective longitudinal study, with 20 subjects between 7 and 70 years-old, 13 females and 7 males, all diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, attended in the Facial Paralysis Ambulatory, of the otorhinolaryngology subject of a University Public Hospital. The use of a Digimess 100,174BL digital measuring caliper was adopted for this study. The measurements were carried out in the facial mimic movement, always starting from a fixed point to a mobile point in the structures: the tragus and the labial commissure, external corner of the eye and labial commissure and also internal corner of the eye and the nasal ala. All measurements were carried out both prior and after the treatment. The quantification of the inco

Abstract: trying to understand the theories of the rainbow we focus the debate between scientific logic and mythic thinking in the history of science. this paper follows three paths. firstly, it presents a summary of the discontinuities and recurrences in the explanation of the fenomena in history of thinking. secondly, registrations of foreign ethnographers in the amazon in the first half of the twentieth century are examined. thirdly, the approach is directed to the 'native theory' about the rainbow in the low lands of south america, trying to understand the logic behind the native classifications as mythic thinking. symmetry among disciplines supposes complementarities between biological theories and humanities and allows for analogies involving biological and social codes.
Faulhaber, Priscila;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142005000200014
Abstract: when we reflect on the history of the scientific amazonian institutes leads us to the problem of the scientific frontier and the meaning of the amazon within the scientific policy. this paper focuses on the relationship between the scientific field and intervention and regional construction. the place of human and social sciences is thought to lie within the symmetry of scientific disciplines.
Faulhaber, Priscila;

Abstract: this paper examines the establishment of offices of the smithsonian institute of social anthropology (isa) in mexico and brazil. the smithsonian's presence depended on diplomatic agreements that required acceptance from the host countries. the article analyzes written documents such as interviews and institutional records to explore the relationship between the discourses and practices involved in the anthropological contribution to the us war effort. this analysis presumes a basic understanding of concepts used at the time, such as 'applied anthropology,' 'area studies' and 'community studies,' as well as definitions specifically used by the smithsonian's anthropologists, such as 'limited good' and 'culture shock.' the comparative method is relevant to understanding what happened in the two countries. in mexico, political negotiations and other factors delayed its implantation. in brazil the process involved inter-institutional disputes. a closer look at these interactions leads to an analysis of the hierarchic interrelationships involved in the creation of the institute.

Abstract: the article bears on the trajectories of general rafael uribe uribe (1859-1914) and the political leader jorge eliecer gaitán (1898-1948) by the examination of literary and biographic texts. uribe inspired gabriel garcía márquez (1928-) in his creation of the protagonist of the novel "one hundred years of solitude". márquez's career as a writer began in 1948, when gaitán died. the assassination of this leader resulted in the so-called 'violence', catalyzed with the impossibility, within the colombian political field, of the social transformation from the 'bottom up', proposed by gaitán. it is interesting to examine in the historicity of myths and practices of colombian political culture, the singular circumstances of the assassination of these two leaders.
Etnografia na Amaz?nia e tradu??o cultural: comparando Constant Tastevin e Curt Nimuendaju
Faulhaber, Priscila;
Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1981-81222008000100003
Abstract: both constant tastevin (1880-1962) and curt (unkel) nimuendaju (1883-1945) translated detailed information collected in the amazon during the first half of the twentieth century. they published their translations into french, english and german, in specialized periodicals in europe and north america. by transposing the native knowledge to a "civilized" language, they participated in the dynamic of appropriation, as seen through the asymmetrical relationships with authorities and institutions in the international scientific field. nimuendaju interacted with robert lowie, who advised him in his ethnological collection of data on ticuna mythology and social organization. collecting words among the indian elders, tastevin shared paul rivet's fear of the loss of indigenous languages. i correlate the collection of texts and artifacts with practices initiated by franz boas to stimulate the formation of inventories. today ethnographic research cannot be restricted to data on the basis of collected information. the anthropology of translation implies the actualization of ethnographies conducted in the past, with the goal of comparing the results of these records with today's data and considering the possibilities of re-appropriating knowledge into the scope of indigenous thinking and movements.
The production of the Handbook of South American Indians Vol 3 (1936-1948)
Faulhaber, Priscila;
Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1809-43412012000100003
Abstract: this paper discusses the intellectual division of labor between us scholars and the ethnographers researching in the field who together produced volume 3 of the ambitious handbook of south american indians, entitled "tropical forest tribes" (1936-1948). julian steward, the book's editor, was an anthropologist with a sociological approach. at the time, he was also involved in conceptual conflicts between scientific policies and collaboration in government programs. here i focus primarily on the relationship between steward and the volume's contributors, specifically the hierarchical attitude that led to an asymmetrical classification of contributors like curt nimuendajú, taken as producers of ethnographic data. researchers who lived in brazil at the time were conceived as 'minor' authors by the editor compared to those held to be academic scholars, i.e. those who directed research and university-level academic training at us institutions. the production of this volume thus reiterated an intellectual division of labor between armchair scholars and fieldwork collectors of ethnographic artifacts for museums.

Faulhaber, Priscila;
Revista de Antropologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-77012004000200002
Abstract: the anthropology of weather includes the study of the significance of astronomical and atmospheric phenomena within indigenous myths and rituals as well as of the importance of representations of these phenomena for the social practices of indigenous people. among the ticuna of upper solim?es (brazil) the celestial bodies depicted in the iconography of artifacts used in the ticuna puberty festival can be related to some aspects of this people's mythology and cosmovision, as expressed in ritual chants and speeches. this relation is translated into expectations regarding the inter-relationships between the annual movement of the stars in the sky and the influence of the rainy and dry seasons for survival activities. the identification of groups of celestial bodies visualized by the ticuna allows us to establish their correlations with the conventionally reconized constellations.
