Young,Carlos Eduardo ?F; Steffen,Priscila G;
Polis (Santiago) , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-65682008000200009
Abstract: the authors investígate the real contribution of biocombustibles to the solution of the environmental problems. after analyzing the current forms of production in brazil, they maintain that the expansión of these will pressure indirectly towards deforestation, contributing thus still more to global warming-up. they indícate how deceptive is the speech that justifies the expansión of biocombustibles because of its contribution to the generation of employment. they maintain that it is fundamental to incorpórate the requirements of sustainability in the production line in order to guarantee competitiveness for the potentially exporting countries, but that even then, that solution has a limit since all the alternative and renewable energies together would not supply the projected pattern of world consumption.
Carlos Eduardo F. Young,Priscila G. Steffen

Data Compaction - Compression without Decompression
Steffen G?rzig
Computer Science , 2014,
Abstract: Data compaction is a new approach for lossless and lossy compression of read-only array data. The biggest advantage over existing approaches is the possibility to access compressed data without any decompression. This makes data compaction most suitable for systems that could currently not apply compression techniques due to real-time or memory constraints. This is true for the majority of all computers, i.e. a wide range of embedded systems.

The Anthropocene, global change and sleeping giants: where on Earth are we going?
Will Steffen
Carbon Balance and Management , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1750-0680-1-3
Abstract: Although a very important exercise, this approach to defining dangerous climate change can itself be dangerous, in particular because it often ignores the systemic nature of the global environment. Feedbacks and nonlinearities are the rule, not the exception, in the functioning of the Earth System [2], and in this Anthropocene era, where human activities have become a global geophysical force in their own right, there is no doubt that surprises await those who apply linear logic to the climate problem. The carbon cycle is centrally involved in many of these feedbacks and nonlinearities.Here we briefly review several of the more important so-called "sleeping giants" in the carbon cycle, processes that have the potential to accelerate the rate of warming beyond that attributed to human emissions of greenhouse gases [3]. The first of these is based on the impact on soil respiration of rising temperature and changing soil moisture, an example of a response of ecosystem physiology to climate change. Although there is still debate about the magnitude of the increase in soil respiration with temperature, and whether there are compensating effects of enhanced plant growth due to mobilisation of nitrogen in the process, the general consensus is that increasing temperature will cause an increase in the emission of CO2 from soil carbon [4].A second "sleeping giant" is the increase in disturbance in terrestrial ecosystems, often associated with pulses of carbon to the atmosphere. The most notable of these are wildfires and pest outbreaks, both sensitive to both warming and changes in the moisture regime. Although these are natural phenomena in the dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems, an increase in the frequency or extent of these disturbances results in a net loss of carbon to the atmosphere. Observations of the large areas of boreal forest in the northern high latitudes suggest that over the past couple of decades, these forests have experienced enhanced rates and/or areas of

Coating with Different Doses of Fertilizer in Vinhático Seeds  [PDF]
Priscila G. F. D. Sousa, Henrique Duarte Vieira, Amanda Justino Acha
American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2017.810173
Abstract: Plathymenia reticulate Benth belongs to the family Fabaceae. It has its own hardwood for luxury furniture, and it is also used in construction. The coating consists in applying thin and uniform layers of inert adhesive mechanism in order to increase the seed size, altering his shape, texture and color, in addition to enabling common use of nutrients, fungicides, insecticides and microorganisms beneficial. The goal of this study was to evaluate the physical and physiological seeds quality of mahogany coated with different doses of fertilizer. The treatments were: T1: sand + lime; T2: sand + lime + 25 g of fertilizer; T3: sand + lime + 50 g of fertilizer; T4: sand + lime + 75 g of fertilizer; T5: sand + lime + 100 g of fertilizer, and control with uncoated seeds. Later, the seeds were evaluated in laboratory and greenhouse. The coating increased up to 91% weight of one thousand seeds without the treatment coated fertilizer. The presence of nutrient seed coating decreases his germination. The doses of fertilizer used were harmful to germination, IVG, emergency and IVE, but did not affect seedlings development.
Why aircraft disinsection?
Gratz,Norman G.; Steffen,Robert; Cocksedge,William;
Bulletin of the World Health Organization , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0042-96862000000800009
Abstract: a serious problem is posed by the inadvertent transport of live mosquitoes aboard aircraft arriving from tropical countries where vector-borne diseases are endemic. surveys at international airports have found many instances of live insects, particularly mosquitoes, aboard aircraft arriving from countries where malaria and arboviruses are endemic. in some instances mosquito species have been established in countries in which they have not previously been reported. a serious consequence of the transport of infected mosquitoes aboard aircraft has been the numerous cases of ??airport malaria?? reported from europe, north america and elsewhere. there is an important on-going need for the disinsection of aircraft coming from airports in tropical disease endemic areas into nonendemic areas. the methods and materials available for use in aircraft disinsection and the who recommendations for their use are described.
