Pontes, Heloisa;
Cadernos Pagu , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332004000100003
Abstract: the article tries to link the history of the book o espírito das roupas reception to fragments of the author?s trajectory. gilda de mello e souza, when coming from fiction to essay, has produced one of the most innovative analyses on fashion, interpreting it as a symbolic language that creates plasticity and expression to diffuse ideas and feelings. this work goes beyond the point of seeing fashion solely as a means of social belonging and distinction. thus the book, written more than half a century ago, keeps nowadays its vigor.
Beleza roubada: gênero, estética e corporalidade no teatro brasileiro
Pontes, Heloisa;
Cadernos Pagu , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332009000200006
Abstract: drawing from a broader research on gender inflections in the brazilian intellectual field and in brazilian drama, between 1940 and 1968, the article discusses the relations between aesthetics and gender, and their implications on the careers of actresses cacilda becker, maria della costa, t?nia carrero and cleyde yáconis. according to testimony of those who saw her perform on stage, cacilda was never hampered by her less favorable physical attributes. the hypothesis is that this is due to the cunning tricks of the conventions of dramatic arts that allow the dodging of social, gender and physical constraints. widely evoked by the media to portrait, underline or diminish women under its focus, beauty rarely features as a relevant dimension in the analysis of female trajectories. hence the interest in discussing the subject through its refraction on the process of social construction of artistic careers.
Inventando nomes, ganhado fama: as atrizes do teatro brasileiro, 1940-68
Pontes,Heloisa;
Etnográfica , 2008,
Abstract: sharing the presupposition that the personal naming is a ?privileged entry door to the study of how the great factors of social differentiation become operative through the personal action? (pina cabral 2005), the article, ?inventing names, acquiring fame: the brazilian theater actresses, 1940-60?, discuss the issues of the artistic name and of the renown reached by the brazilian theater actors. it approaches the names as dynamic instruments of action with the aim at verifying the logic that rules over the choice of the artistic names beyond the discursive rationality specific to each individual case. in the process of the social construction of the artist and of the person that houses it, different marks of gender, class, and generation are combined. in this way, it does not seem random that, in so much unequal and hierarchical societies as the brazilian one, activities that are dependent upon the body have being converted into a symbolic capital that is essential to ?make? famous a name. of this situation are the witnesses the theater?s actors approached in the article and, contemporaneously, the models and the soccer players.
Crítica de cultura no feminino
Pontes, Heloisa;
Mana , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132008000200009
Abstract: the article analyses the inflections of gender upon the brazilian intellectual field, in its interface with literary and cultural critique, from the 1920's to the 1960's. it focuses on the trajectory of three expressive women who achieved renown as critics of culture, essayists and writers: lúcia miguel pereira, patrícia galv?o and gilda mello e souza. the three belong to distinct generations and cover the political spectrum of the time: from communism to socialism, for patrícia galv?o, through the intellectual circles of catholicism, for lúcia miguel pereira, or else maintaining a certain distance from these issues and establishing an academic intellectual identity, in the case of gilde de mello e souza. when taken as a set and in the context of the constraints that derive from gender relations, they delineate some of the possible fields for the intellectual activity of women at the time. so as to avoid essentializing social markers that only become analytically potent when placed in relationship, the article concludes by a comparison of the intellectual and theatrical fields, in order to contrast career opportunities and the distinct ways of making a "name" for oneself that were available to intellectuals and actresses at the time.
Entrevista com Antonio Candido
Pontes, Heloisa;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092001000300001

Cidades e intelectuais: os "nova-iorquinos" da Partisan Review e os "paulistas" de Clima entre 1930 e 1950
Pontes, Heloisa;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092003000300003
Abstract: the paper analyses, in a comparative perspective, both the similarities and the differences of the "new yorker" intellectuals, gathered by the partisan review, and the "paulistas," gathered by the clima magazine. being heirs to the modernist legacy, familiarized with cultural cosmopolitanism, and aware of the intellectual and artistic local production, they took the stage in the "paulista" and "new yorker" cultural scene in the 1940's and 1950's. the latter could also renovate the discussion on the relationship between modernism in the arts and radicalism in politics. as both intellectuals and writers, they were distinct from the academics in the strict sense. as critics and reviewers, they made the essay their expression means by excellence, finding in the new yorker literary and political magazines their institutional forum. at the same time similar and distinct to the clima "paulistas," they provide a reasonable counterpoint to go deeper in the investigation of the intellectual life in sao paulo in that period. that will be done if we, above all, are able to advance over the investigative scope of prevailing sociological problems aside the recuperation of the particularities of the cultural and intellectual history of the cities of new york and sao paulo, in order to deepen the comparative perspective.
Undivided object: language, ethnography and sources
Pontes, Heloisa;
Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1809-43412011000100022
Abstract: this article argues that anthropology should not avoid studying the world of art and the specialized fields of cultural production. to do this it is necessary to examine the relationship between ethnography, language and social processes, as well as the way in which we make use o four sources (written, oral and visual) in our research. while this is the basic argument of the text, it also moves into a discussion of the sources that are available for the social history of the theater and brazilian intellectual life from 1940 to 1960: photographs, interviews, reminiscences, biographies, autobiographies as well as books and theater repertories.
