Theoretical Considerations about the Steady State Combustion of Wood Char in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed Reactor  [PDF]
Carlos Pinho
Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/epe.2013.53021
Abstract:

A theoretical study on the performance of steady state bubbling fluidized bed burners is presented using a simple mathematical model. The proposed model has pedagogical and practical advantages due to its simplicity. The calculations, whose results are plotted in several graphics, were based on data obtained in laboratory scale experiments. The experiments were carried out with wood chars and the model allows a proper evaluation of physical and chemical phenomena taking place inside the reactor, as well as a fast approach to the pre-design phase, before going towards more complex and time consuming numerical modeling. In the first part of the paper the steady state modeling is compared with the combustion of successive batches of char particles. Afterwards, the performance of a 1 m diameter bed operating from 700 to 800 is shown.

Pinho, Osmundo;
Cadernos Pagu , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332012000100006
Abstract: in this study the author seeks to explore a specific critical perspective related to the race, sexuality and gender articulation, understanding that gay pornography will be exemplary to show the production of a coordinated system of classifications and categories, stereotypes and representations built as a discourse that may be read as a socially produced inventory of fetichization for racialized sexual desire. in order to develop this view the author presents a short theoretical discussion on pornography, interrogated by the power/pleasure articulation and the reading of three hemic corpora of racial representation related to homosexual desire: blackness, whiteness and brazilianness.
A Biologia molecular das doen?as inflamatórias intestinais

Abstract: despite its high prevalence and many years of basic and clinical research, pathophysiology of crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis remains a great challenge. the recent advances in molecular biology techniques have provided identification of a great number of molecules related to these diseases that may help in a near future to understand its still obscure aspects. many evidences have recently demonstrated that inflammatory bowel diseases (ibd) result from an imbalance between bowel commensal bacterial flora and the immunological mucosal apparatus. the very consistent finding that mutations in nod2/card15 gene occur in a high percentage of crohn's disease patients and its phenotype correlation have boosted further research to identify other ibd-related molecules. indeed, many other variations in gene expression have been demonstrated to be related to pathophysiology of ibd including different aspects such as inate immunity, inflammatory response and mucosal barrier disfunction. the observation of the correlation between these gene expression variation, disease behaviour and response to therapeutics may contribute in a near future to understand most questions regarding these complex diseases.
Resposta completa à terapia neoadjuvante no cancer de reto: apenas sorte ou um resultado previsível?
Pinho, Mauro;
Revista Brasileira de Coloproctologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-98802007000400017
Abstract: the good results obtained by chemoradiotherapy as neoadjuvant therapy in the treatment of rectal cancer have included it as a routine procedure in order to improve resectability and sphincter preservation. recent studies suggest a non operative approach in cases of complete tumour response and demonstrate the need of a better definition for prognosis of tumour response to neoadjuvant therapy as individual therapeutic approach. there are now evidences that this responsiveness is related to biomolecular tumour profile. tissue expression of several proteins such as p53 and thymidylate synthase have shown significant correlation with tumour regression, although its predictive value has been insufficient to influence clinical decision. on the other hand, studies using microarray techniques to analyze a specific subsets of gene expressions have shown very encouraging results, with predictive values for tumour regression close to 100%, as a consistent possibility for clinical application in defining a more precise and individual indication for neoadjuvant therapy.
A "Fiel", a "Amante" e o "Jovem Macho Sedutor": sujeitos de gênero na periferia racializada
Pinho, Osmundo;
Saúde e Sociedade , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-12902007000200013
Abstract: in this ethnographic essay the author, based on a research study carried out among young dwellers of a big popular settlement in the rio de janeiro metropolitan area, intends to investigate the modernization experience in impoverished and peripheral social environments, with specific attention to structuring effects of this modernization over race and gender practices. the aim is to introduce new elements into the debate about the specificity of brazilian modernization, as well as into the comprehension of the race and gender relations in contexts of poverty. based on the data, the author intends to represent the subjects' "point of view" and the objective material conditions for the reproduction of inequalities, something that seems to be crucial for public policy elaboration in the field of reproductive and sexual health to young people, regarding at the same time the intersectional social conditions for production of violence and inequality.

Does pH of tyrode solution modify glucose and electrolyte jejunal absorption in rats?  [PDF]
Elizabeth Lage Borges, Marcelo de Pinho Viana
Journal of Biophysical Chemistry (JBPC) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jbpc.2012.32014
Abstract: Studies have shown that glucose is able to decrease the pH of the surface epithelium jejunal preparations when added in vitro and the existence of a high concentration of protons in the immediate area of the mucosa could be of considerable significance for absorption of electrolytes. The aim of this study is to assess whether the change in pH of Tyrode (solution used for perfusion of the jejunum) interferes with the absorption of glucose and electrolytes. Male Wistar rats weighing 200 to 220 g (n = 6) were utilized. Jejunal absorption of glucose and electrolytes was investigated in rats. A Tyrode solution containing twice glucose, sodium and potassium concentration (pH 7.0, 7.4, 8.0 and 8.5) was infused through the jejunal loops during 40 minutes. The glucose absorption was not significantly affected by Tyrode. However, there was significantly decrease in sodium absorption at pH 7.0 and 8.5 (41.13 ± 2.79 and 41.37 ± 1.71, respectively, P < 0.05) when compared with the uptake at pH 7.4 and 8.0 (61.06 ± 6.50 and 56.28 ± 7.03, respectively, P < 0.05). Moreover, potassium absorption increased at pH 8.0 (1.04 ± 0.07) when compared with the uptake at pH 7.0 (0.59 ± 0.04), 7.4 (0.78 ± 0.08) and 8.5 (0.54 ± 0.05) (P < 0.05). These data indicate that the pH of Tyrode has no influence on glucose absorption. However, the major potassium uptake occurs at pH 8.0, while the absorption of sodium is impaired at pH 7.0 and 8.5.
