Abstract: the aim of this paper was to assess the caries experience of 12- and 15-year-old schoolchildren from public and private schools in salvador, bahia, brazil, and to identify the access of children to dental services and the coverage of such services, which might be related to differences between the groups. cross-sectional data were obtained from 3,313 clinical exams, which followed the who (1997) criteria for the diagnosis of dental caries. the analysis was carried out by means of the student's t test, the chi-square test and analysis of covariance. there were no differences regarding dmft and frequency of caries-free individuals between public and private schools. however, while f (filled teeth) was the most prevalent component of the index in subjects from private schools, m (missing teeth) was the most common in those from public schools. the access to dental services in the last year was the only variable associated to the differences between both groups. thus, the importance of access to dental services and social benefits must be pointed out in order to guarantee equity in oral health.

Abstract: the stevedores of the port of mucuripe are workers without employment bond with the company dock of ceará. they act in the deck and the stowage of the ships, making the embarkment, the landing and the organization of containers. in this environment of constant exposition to risks, occupational physician is basic in the organization of plans of prevention of accidents, education of the workers and monitorization of the risks. the objective of this article is to characterize and to know the stevedore?s job, to correlate the port environment and its productive process with the factors of risk and the damages associates, as well as standing out the importance of the occupational medicine for the control of such risks. the fieldwork was developed in the months of january and february of 2003, with the application of 60 questionnaires to the stevedores. the analysis of the data evidence that the main inherent problems of health this stevedore?s job are, among others, the osteo-articulate (lumbar disc hernia and consumings in the joint of the knee) and metabolic disturbances (diabetes and arterial hipertension). these if not only must to the work, but also and, with great influence, to the context of life of these professionals.

Abstract: this article brings some new elements to the discussion of the transformation of brazilian evangelical context. for this, the text phocus on black music gospel / "música negra". this kind of music is supported by contemporary musicalities as hip-hop and reggae musical styles and is produced by independent groups. these groups are constituted by religious individuals, who are not connected to specialized musical enterprises. they present goods and services that are in a dialogical link with religious notions, particularly those related to afrodescendants religious adepts. their practices and conceptions define a specific kind of participation and belonging. this perspective of study has as theoretical resources notions like "blackness", "black atlantic" and "diaspora".

Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2014.46046
Abstract:

Background: Contraceptive methods (CM) are important resources in the prevention of adolescent pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate adolescent knowledge, attitudes and practices related to contraception. Study Design: A cross-sectional and exploratory study was conducted with 7th to 9th grade adolescents in northeastern Brazil. Their knowledge, attitudes, and contraceptive method use were analysed by gender, age and sexual initiation groups. Results: A sexual debut had been experienced by 21% (n = 120) of all respondents (n = 570). The majority of the respondents who had experienced a sexual debut were male (73.3%, n = 88), their mean age was 15 years (SD = 1.46), and 49.3% (n = 59) never used any CM. The participants displayed low knowledge and unfavourable and ambivalent attitudes concerning contraception. Conclusion: Adolescents initiate sexual intercourse with knowledge and attitudes that limit the use of CM, which makes them more at risk of pregnancy. Further research that will be representative of the specific population in need of interventions is necessary.

Abstract: Over the past 10 years significant advances have been made towards the description of genetics and molecular mechanisms controlling grapevine berry growth. Regardless of this, many aspects of early fruit morphogenesis and its development control remain to be elucidated. In an attempt to understand gene expression patterns associated with the berry growth development, the contrasting phenotype between the cv. Isabel (Vitis labrusca L.) and its early berry development mutant “Isabel Precoce” has been explored by a candidate gene approach. “Isabel Precoce” (Vitis labrusca L.) was confirmed as an EDV (Essentially Derived Variety) of Isabel, with a 30-35-day reduction in the berry growth phase when compared to the wild type and thus, it constitutes an informative model to investigate many aspects of fruit growth and development. Phenotypic analysis showed that “Isabel Precoce” develops fruits that are smaller in diameter and volume despite of following similar development kinetics. The expression of many genes associated with plant growth and development (MIKCC-type MADS box genes), sugar transport and with the control of flavonoid biosynthetic pathway have been evaluated. The majority of the genes presented a remarkably similar transcription profile. However, a higher induction of transcript accumulation for some genes has been observed in the “Isabel Precoce” genetic background.

Abstract: the family health strategy, main proposal for reorganizing the health care model, is politically, institutionally and economically supported by the state, as an alternative for the consolidation of the unified health system's principles. the proposal's expansion and implementation in large urban centers has faced many difficulties, due to complex social, political and economic contexts involving the families residing in these territories. these difficulties have been largely discussed by diverse public health specialists. this article analyses the uses and meanings of the terms "integral health care, attachment and reception", identifying them as strategic elements in health practices in integral care programs, and in constructing people's right to health as a citizenship right.

Abstract: plant breeding has been a human practice for some thousands of years. however, this process of domestication has made plants more vulnerable to pests and diseases. classical plant breeding has allowed the genetic manipulation of plants through crossings with a resulting increase in crop productivity. recently, the recombinant dna technology has increased the possibilities of integration of exogenous genes to the plant genome, resulting in the production of transgenic plants. despite the great debate on this issue, such plants represent to date a promising avenue for plant breeding. there are many examples of gene transference strategies which have been successful in promoting resistance to herbicides, viruses, fungi, bacteria and insects, or in producing an increase in food quality. in addition to biotechnological applications, transgenic plants have made a significant contribution to the study of gene functioning, such as the analysis of genic expression regulation and the study of protein functions codified by distinct plant genes.
