Effects of caffeine on the electrophysiological, cognitive and motor responses of the central nervous system

Abstract: Caffeine is the most consumed psychoactive substance in the world. The effects of caffeine have been studied using cognitive and motor measures, quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) and event-related potentials. However, these methods are not usually employed in combination, a fact that impairs the interpretation of the results. The objective of the present study was to analyze changes in electrophysiological, cognitive and motor variables with the ingestion of caffeine, and to relate central to peripheral responses. For this purpose we recorded event-related potentials and eyes-closed, resting EEG, applied the Stroop test, and measured reaction time. Fifteen volunteers took caffeine (400 mg) or placebo in a randomized, crossover, double-blind design. A significant reduction of alpha absolute power over the entire scalp and of P300 latency at the Fz electrode were observed after caffeine ingestion. These results are consistent with a stimulatory effect of caffeine, although there was no change in the attention (Stroop) test or in reaction time. The qEEG seems to be the most sensitive index of the changes produced by caffeine in the central nervous system since it proved to be capable of detecting changes that were not evident in the tests of cognitive or motor performance.

Abstract: low tunnels is a type of greenhouse that is used for cultivation of species of small load, as lettuce, strawberry, sweet pepper, rocket press and cucumber. this type of greenhouse has a smaller cost of installation than other because its lower high. the plastic covering allows the gain of temperature during the day improving plant growth, protecting the crop from the impact of the rain, cold wind and low temperature. the purpose of this research was to decide the atmosphere changes with the use of polyethylene film with density fall, in low tunnel with perforated area at 0; 5; 10; 15, and 20% in the plastic in the development of the rocket press culture (eruca vesicaria sativa (mill) thell). the results showed different productivity between the tunnel with different holes and significative differences in physics characteristics of plants between some different treatments. as for the inside atmosphere of the tunnel it could see by statistic analysis, that the air temperature in review schedule of the day had significative difference between 0% of perforation and soil without covering, and, the air absolute humidity is higher as much less is the perforated plastic covering.

Abstract: The transposition of the S o Francisco River is considered one of the greatest engineering works in Brazil of all time since it will cross an extensive agricultural region of continental dimensions, involving environmental impacts, water, soil, irrigation, water payment and other multidisciplinary themes. Taking into account its importance, this subject was incorporated into a discipline of UFSCar (Federal University of S o Carlos - Brazil) named "Pollution and Environmental Impacts". It was noted strong reaction against the project, even before the presentation. To allow a critical analysis, the first objective was to compile the main technical data and environmental impacts. The second objective was to detect the three most important aspects that cause reaction, concluding for the following reasons: assumption that the volume of water to be transferred was much greater than it actually is proposed in the project; lack of knowledge about similar project already done in Brazil; the idea that the artificial canal to be built was much broader than that proposed by the project. The participants' opinion about "volume to be transferred" was raised quantitatively four times: 2-undergraduate students; 1-graduate; 1-outside community. The average resulted 14 times larger than that proposed in the project, significant according to t-test. It was concluded that the reaction to water transfer project is due in part to the ignorance combined with a preconceived idea that tend to overestimate the magnitude of environmental impacts. Abstract: In this paper, a continuous polymeric matrix highly filled with fiber of sugarcane bagasse has been obtained and its feasibility as an ink-absorbing material has been evaluated. In order to study the effect of the amount of cellulose fiber on the surface printability, contact angle measurement using different liquids—water-based inks, ethanol and ink for ink-jet printers—and printing tests were performed on composites of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB). The composites were processed in a Haake internal mixer, using the SCB without any previous chemical treatment or compatibilizer. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and derivative thermogravimetry (TG/ DTG) revealed an increase in the thermal stability and in the degree of crystallinity of the HDPE. The optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the cellulosic material was homogeneously embedded within the HDPE matrix. In order to assess the resistance of the composite sample to the pull strength of the printer, tensile tests were applied to the composites and the results were compared to known paper samples. The best result was achieved in the composite with the highest content of SCB, as well as the shortest drying time.

Abstract: techniques that employ 15n have proved to be an important tool in many areas of the agronomic and biomedical sciences. nevertheless, their use is limited by methodological difficulties and by the price of compounds in the international market. nitric compounds (15no3-) have attracted the interest of researchers. however, these compounds are not currently produced in brazil. thus, in the present work h15no3 was obtained from the oxidation of anhydrous 15nh3. the method we used differs from the industrial process in that the absorption tower is replaced with a polytetrafluoroethylene-lined, stainless-steel hydration reactor. the process output was evaluated based on the following parameters: reaction temperature; ratio of reagents; pressure and flow of 15nh3(g) through the catalyst (pt/rh). the results showed that, at the best conditions (500 oc; 50 % excess o2; 0.4 mpa; and 3.39 g.min-1 of 15nh3), a conversion percentage (n-15nh3 to n-15no3-) of 62.2 %, an overall nitrogen balance (n-15nh3 + n-15no3-) of 86.8 %, and purity higher than 99 % could be obtained.

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to describe the journey of the Portuguese navigator Sebasti o Rodrigues Soromenho, who sailed along the shores of California at the command of Felipe II, in the years 1594-1595. His voyage was understood on the context of the participation of Portuguese navigators in the mapping of the Spanish American coast line, and their contribution for the definition of the maritime routes of the Pacific Ocean in the 16th century. To achieve our goal, we undertook a careful study of the documentation related to this expedition, namely the two itineraries, the oficial correspondence between the king and the vice-roys and the copy of the Soromenho’s will. All of these documents have remained unknowed for the most of us. O presente texto pretende tra ar a biografia do piloto português Sebasti o Rodrigues Soromenho, na qual se destaca a viagem empreendida ao longo da costa da Califórnia, nos anos de 1594-1595, a mando de Filipe II, com o propósito expresso de descobrir pontos de apoio aos navios da rota de Manila. Ao empreender esta expedi o, o navegador inscreveu o seu nome na lista de portugueses que serviram na armada castelhana e que contribuíram para a descoberta do Pacífico e o levantamento e registo das costas da América Hispanica, contribuindo de forma decisiva na defini o das rotas do Pacífico no século XVI. Para cumprir este propósito, debru amo-nos na análise dos documentos relativos a esta expedi o, como os dois roteiros, a documenta o oficial emanada pelo rei e pelo vicereino de Nova Espanha e o traslado do testamento do piloto.
