Des Méridionales à la Cour : l’exemple des demoiselles de Saint Cyr (1686 1793) Southerners at the Court: the example of the ‘demoiselles’ of Saint-Cyr (1686–1793)
Dominique Picco
Saint-Cyr is certainly not Versailles, but there was a close proximity between the Maison royale de Saint-Louis (known simply as Saint-Cyr) and the palace, links that were not merely geographic. Reserved for the daughters of impoverished French nobility, Saint-Cyr was created in 1686 from the convergence between Madame de Maintenon’s passion for education and the Sun King’s political will to win the fidelity of a social category now known by historians as the ‘noblesse seconde’. During the reign of Louis XIV, support for the school was strong, but it was more subdued during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, though support was always present. Based on Preuves de la noblesse des demoiselles(Evidence of the nobility of the young women), conserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) and on papers from the Saint-Cyr Archives in the Department of Yvelines, we can locate the place of baptism — comparable to place of birth — of 3,155 students who attended Saint-Cyr until its closing in 1793. Among these, 413 were born in the South of France. To make a portrait of these Southerners, three axes are used: the place, or region, in the south, where the girls came from, the nobility of their families’ lineage and these former students’ destinies, particularly whether or not they returned to their native areas.
Numerical Results For The 2D Random Bond 3-state Potts Model
Marco Picco
Physics , 1995, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.54.14930
Abstract: We present results of a numerical simulation of the 3-state Potts model with random bond, in two dimension. In particular, we measure the critical exponent associated to the magnetization and the specific heat. We also compare these exponents with recent analytical computations.
Weak Randomness for large q-State Potts models in Two Dimensions
Marco Picco
Physics , 1997, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.79.2998
Abstract: We have studied the effect of weak randomness on q-state Potts models for q > 4 by measuring the central charges of these models using transfer matrix methods. We obtain a set of new values for the central charges and then show that some of these values are related to one another by a factorization law.
A Study of Cross-Over Effects For The 2D Random Bond Potts Model
Marco Picco
Physics , 1998,
Abstract: We present results of a numerical simulation of the $q$-state random bond Potts model in two dimensions and for large $q$. In particular, care is taken to study the crossover from the pure model to the random model, as well as the crossover from the percolation to the random model. We show how to determine precisely the random fixed point and measure critical exponents at this point.
Critical behavior of the Ising model with long range interactions
Marco Picco
Physics , 2012,
Abstract: We present results of a Monte Carlo study for the ferromagnetic Ising model with long range interactions in two dimensions. This model has been simulated for a large range of interaction parameter $\sigma$ and for large sizes. We observe that the results close to the change of regime from intermediate to short range do not agree with the renormalization group predictions.
Dynamical AC study of the critical behavior in Heisenberg spin glasses
Marco Picco,Felix Ritort
Physics , 2004, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.71.100406
Abstract: We present some numerical results for the Heisenberg spin-glass model with Gaussian interactions, in a three dimensional cubic lattice. We measure the AC susceptibility as a function of temperature and determine an apparent finite temperature transition which is compatible with the chiral-glass temperature transition for this model. The relaxation time diverges like a power law $\tau\sim (T-T_c)^{-z\nu}$ with $T_c=0.19(4)$ and $z\nu=5.0(5)$. Although our data indicates that the spin-glass transition occurs at the same temperature as the chiral glass transition, we cannot exclude the possibility of a chiral-spin coupling scenario for the lowest frequencies investigated.
