Self-trapped bidirectional waveguides in a saturable photorefractive medium
M. Belic,Ph. Jander,A. Strinic,A. Desyatnikov,C. Denz
Physics , 2003, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.68.025601
Abstract: We introduce a time-dependent model for the generation of joint solitary waveguides by counter-propagating light beams in a photorefractive crystal. Depending on initial conditions, beams form stable steady-state structures or display periodic and irregular temporal dynamics. The steady-state solutions are non-uniform in the direction of propagation and represent a general class of self-trapped waveguides, including counterpropagating spatial vector solitons as a particular case.
ORIGINAL PAPER Bacterial burden of the patients with coronary artery disease treated surgically with coronary artery bypass grafting
Bogdan Jegier,S?awomir Jander
Archives of Medical Science , 2005,
Abstract: Background: Infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori and Mycoplasma pneumoniaeis taken into consideration as a factor influencing development of atherosclerosis. Objective: The aim of the study was an assessment of infectious burden with selected bacterial microorganisms in the patients with advanced atherosclerotic process. Material and methods: The study included 40 patients with three-vessels stable coronary arteries disease referred to the surgical revascularization. Plasma levels of IgG class antibodies anti-Chlamydia pneumoniae, anti-Helicobacter pylori and anti-Mycoplasma pneumoniaewere determined with the tests based on the ELISA technique (Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay). Results: In the study group, plasma IgG class antibodies anti-Helicobacter pylori (n=35, f=0.875, p<0.05) and a combination of antibodies anti-Helicobacter pylori and anti-Chlamydia pneumoniae (n=17, f=0.81, p<0.001) were significantly more frequently detected in comparison with the other antibodies. Conclusions: The results of the study may suggest a participation of bacterial factor in the atherosclerotic process developing in coronary arteries. In stable advanced three-vessels coronary arteries disease the infection with two kinds of pathogens was significantly more frequently detected. However, our findings did not allow to determine a role of bacterial infection in etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis
Digital logic using 3-terminal spin transfer torque devices
Benjamin Buford,Albrecht Jander,Pallavi Dhagat
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: We demonstrate for the first time that functionally complete digital logic can be created by using three terminal devices each consisting of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) and spin transfer torque (STT) element with a shared free magnetic layer. Rather than the output of devices being high or low voltage levels, logical states are represented as output resistances which retain their state when unpowered. By cascading and clocking devices using a multi-phase clock, threshold logic can be used to implement functionally complete digital logic. Using this approach, a single device can act as an AND, NAND, OR, or NOR gate without the need for external circuitry. Required device parameters and tolerances are discussed.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AMOUNT FOR PERIODS DRY AND WET (1980-2009) FOR THE DOWN STROKE APODI-MOSSORó/RN Abstract: The present paper aims at using the Quantis Technique for the determination of drought and rain periods, corresponding to the historical series in the 30-year stretch between 1980-2009 of the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária do Rio Grande do Norte-EMPARN, using the Pinkayan and Terezinha Xavier methodology. Up to the present time (2011) according to research in books and periodicals, a quantilic technique has not been applied to this area of investigation. Five categories have been used to analise the quantis technique: very dry, dry, normal, rainy and very rainy. This classification has been set in an annual scale in order to help in data systematization and in the collection of normal or regular rain figures in the low Apodi-Mossoró watercourse, represented by the quantis Q(0.15), Q(0.35), Q(0.50), Q(0.65) e Q(0.85). Important information has been gathered about the climate regime in the area under study correlated to the extreme classes (very dry and very rainy), and these correlations have served as the starting point of research on socio-environmental impacts associated to natural disasters, as well as in water resources management, hydrology studies, urban and agricultural planning and as a likely source of information for other works
Spatiotemporal Pattern of Neuroinflammation After Impact-Acceleration Closed Head Injury in the Rat
Servan Rooker,Sebastian Jander,Jos Van Reempts,Guido Stoll
Mediators of Inflammation , 2006,
Abstract: Inflammatory processes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of traumatic brain damage. We analyzed the spatiotemporal expression pattern of the proinflammatory key molecules: interleukin-1 β , interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor- α , and inducible nitric oxide synthase in a rat closed head injury (CHI) paradigm. 51 rats were used for RT-PCR analysis after CHI, and 18 for immunocytochemistry. We found an early upregulation of IL-1 β , IL-6, and TNF- α mRNA between 1h and 7h after injury; the expression of iNOS mRNA only revealed a significant increase at 4h. After 24h, the expression decreased towards baseline levels, and remained low until 7d after injury. Immunocytochemically, IL-1 β induction was localized to ramified microglia in areas surrounding the primary impact place as well as deeper brain structures. Our study shows rapid induction of inflammatory gene expression that exceeds by far the primary impact site and might therefore contribute to tissue damage at remote sites.
SHORT COMMUNICATION Evaluation of the dental status in patients referred for heart surgery – a preliminary report

Archives of Medical Science , 2006,
Abstract: The authors examined the oral health status in 100 consecutive patients of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Medical University of Lodz, referred to scheduled heart operations. 26% of them were edentulous and they did not undergo closer clinical examination. Patients with natural dentition made 74% of the examined group. Oral hygiene in majority of the cases was not satisfactory – in 64% of the patients calculus and accompanying gingivitis were found. 17% of patients had neither treated nor removed roots. A DMF (Decay Missing Filled) index and treatment index were calculated in these patients as well. Mean values of the DMF index are: D – 3, M – 17, F – 4. The mean value of the treatment index equals 0.57. Lymphadenopathy was observed in 42% of cases. Our findings indicate that during qualification to a heart surgery dental examination and treatment should be considered.
