Abstract: the stable carbon isotopes used in ecology and paleoecology during the last 30 years has now been used in dietary studies of animals. however, there are not enough studies on the metabolism patterns and turnover rates of the 13c in avian. this experiment established the turnover rates of the 13c in egg and liver tissues of adult laying hens through the substitution of commercial diets by diets containing c3 and c4 photosynthetic cycle grains for 50 days. the d?13c difference in two diets contents was 16.13?. the diets 13c turnover rates in tissues were adapted in an exponential model that describes the isotopic carbon turnover in those tissues. avian turnover rates of 13c fed with diet based on grains c3 were larger in liver than egg with half-life of 2.9 and 3.7 days. avian fed with diet based on grains c4 showed turnover rates larger in egg than liver, with half-life of 4.0 to 5.3 days respectively. the d?13c values reached in egg and liver differed of the diet in approximately 2?.

Abstract: Os isótopos estáveis do carbono que eram utilizados em estudos ecológicos e paleoecológicos apresentaram um incremento nos últimos trinta anos, na utiliza o em estudos dietéticos em animais. Entretanto, existem poucas informa es sobre o padr o metabólico e sobre as taxas de turnover do 13C em aves. O presente experimento estabeleceu curvas de substitui o e taxas de movimenta o do 13C no ovo e no fígado de aves de postura adultas, pela substitui o da ra o comercial por dietas compostas de gr os dos ciclos fotossintéticos C3 e C4, durante 50 dias. A diferen a no conteúdo isotópico do delta per mil do carbono-13 (delta? 13C) entre as duas dietas foi de 16,13?. A taxa de substitui o do 13C das dietas, nos tecidos, adequou-se num modelo exponencial, descrevendo o turnover do carbono nos tecidos analisados. As taxas de movimenta o do 13C, nas aves alimentadas com dieta baseada em gr os C3, foi maior no fígado em rela o ao ovo, com valores para a meia-vida de 2,9 e 3,7 dias, respectivamente. As aves que receberam ra o com gr os C4 apresentaram uma taxa de turnover no ovo superior àquela obtida para o fígado, com meia-vida de 4,0 e 5,3 dias, respectivamente. Os valores do delta?13C observados para ovo e fígado diferiram em aproximadamente 2? daqueles referentes às dietas.
Photosynthetic rate of the aquatic macrophyte Egeria densa Planch. (Hydrocharitaceae) in two rivers from the Itanhaém River Basin in S?o Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: egeria densa is a submerged aquatic macrophyte which, in brazil, causes problems specially for electric energy generation. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the photosynthetic rate of e. densa in two rivers (aguapeú and mambu) with different limnological features, both located in the itanhaém river basin. this species is abundant in both rivers without causing damages to their multiple uses. photosynthetic rates were analysed in february, may, august and november 1998 and limnological variables of the water and sediment were also measured. the highest value of gross photosynthesis (gp) was detected in may (10.06 in aguapeú and 6.10 mgo2/gdw/h in mambu), when under-water photosynthetic active radiation (par) was also high (1,126.7 and 895.8 m mol/m/s, respectively). gp, total phosphorous, total co2 and par were always higher in aguapeú river.
Efeito da utiliza??o da levedura desidratada de álcool em dietas para tilápia-do-nilo

Abstract: this study aimed to evaluate the effects of molasses yeast (saccharomyces cerevisae) as replacement for vitamin premix in diets for nile tilapia (oreochromis niloticus). three hundred sex-reversed, all-male fingerlings, averaging 1.5 g live weight, were stocked in 20 circular 270-l biofilter equipped fiberglass tanks (15 fish/tank). they were fed to satisfaction twice a day with a 32% crude protein diet for 40 days, followed by a 28% crude protein diet for 74 days. test diets were prepared to contain at least 10% of yeast as replacement for the vitamin premix, and a diet without yeast was used as control. five treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. no significant differences were observed in regard to weight gain and specific growth rate. high mortality was observed on groups fed with diets without vitamin premix supplementation. fish fed with yeast-containing diets presented reduced body protein and increased body lipids as compared to fish fed with the control diet. molasses yeast is suited to replace water-dissolvable vitamins in diets of nile tilapia fingerlings.

Abstract: this paper discusses the potential of different ways of producing diaries when used in collective health as tools for intervention through institutional analysis. the text and its argument are based on an analysis of many different studies that use the technique of diaries in fieldwork. several theoretical and methodological approaches are considered in this study, which was related to academic work for the attainment of a doctoral degree. the work of a group of oral health professionals interested in proposing innovative strategies for developing types of care in their work in the public health system in campinas city, sp, brazil. the practice of writing diaries allowed the professionals to reflect on their everyday work and experiences. complex and often conflictive situations in basic activities in oral health are described and elaborated on, and the method has proved to be a feasible manner for these professionals to give meaning and form to their individual and collective "practices."

Abstract: this article describes the methodological strategy created during the research carried out for a doctoral degree, with institutional analysis in collective health being used as the theoretical and methodological framework. the article is thus meant as a contribution to the debate on methodological approaches to the relationships between researchers and their act of researching. during the investigation, action-research operated as a crossroad between intervention and research, along a path we refer to as intervention-research-action. the research stages and the theoretical-methodological production were constructed concurrently, in a process mediated by the knowledge and questions of the subjects related to this investigation. knowledge production in the area of oral health care was made through two articulated processes of intervention-action: one of the researcher in and within the group, other of the participants in the group, namely professionals in public health in their everyday life work in oral health care.
Efeito da utiliza o da levedura desidratada de álcool em dietas para tilápia-do-nilo

Abstract: Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da levedura desidratada de álcool (Saccharomyces cerevisae) como substituto do suplemento vitamínico, em dietas de tilápia-do-nilo (Oreochromis niloticus). Trezentos alevinos machos, sexualmente revertidos, com peso médio de 1,5 g, foram distribuídos igualmente em 20 aquários de fibra de vidro, equipados com filtro biológico. Cinco dietas isoprotéicas com 32% de proteína bruta na primeira fase (40 dias) e com 28% de proteína bruta na segunda fase (74 dias) foram fornecidas ad libitum, duas vezes ao dia. A dieta-controle n o conti-nha levedura, e as demais apresentavam 10% de levedura. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repeti es. N o houve influência significativa dos tratamentos sobre o ganho de peso e taxa de crescimento específico. Foi observada, nos peixes alimentados com dietas sem suplemento vitamínico, alta mortalidade. Os peixes que receberam levedura apresentaram menor conteúdo corporal de proteína, e maior, de lipídeos. A levedura desidratada de álcool pode ser usada como fonte de vitaminas hidrossolúveis em dietas para alevinos de tilápia-do-nilo.
Coeficientes de digestibilidade e valores de aminoácidos digestíveis de alguns ingredientes para tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus)

Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o coeficiente de digestibilidade aparente (CDA) dos aminoácidos do milho, farelo de trigo, farelo de soja e da farinha de peixe. Empregaram-se juvenis de tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) (25,24 ± 3,88 g) alimentados com ra o referência peletizada contendo 0,10% de óxido de cr mio (indicador) e 33,78% de proteína bruta. O CDA médio dos aminoácidos foi de: 88,31; 77,40; 91,78 e 82,58% para o milho, farelo de trigo, farelo de soja e farinha de peixe, respectivamente. Ainda que os resultados sugiram que o CDA da proteína possa ser indicativo do CDA dos aminoácidos, seus valores individuais variaram dentre e entre os ingredientes avaliados. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que os valores de aminoácidos digestíveis devem ser usados na formula o de ra es completas (precisas) e econ micas.

Abstract: Foi avaliado o desempenho e os índices de rendimento da tilápia-do-Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) alimentada com níveis crescentes de farinha de sangue atomizado (FSA) ou de farinha de sangue convencional (FSC) em dietas formuladas com base em aminoácidos digestíveis. Foram utilizados 252 alevinos, distribuídos num delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial (2 x 4) + 1, duas classes de farinha de sangue com quatro níveis de inclus o de cada farinha na dieta, e uma dieta-controle, com quatro repeti es. Os tratamentos consistiram em uma dieta-controle à base de farelo de soja, contendo 34% de proteína digestível (PD) e 3.200 kcal de energia digestível kg-1 (ED), mais quatro ra es formuladas com FSA e quatro ra es com FSC, com inclus es de 5, 10, 15 e 20% de cada farinha na ra o, mantendo-se os níveis de PD, ED, fósforo, cálcio, lisina, metionina, treonina e triptofano idênticos aos da dieta-controle. Concluiu-se que é possível utilizar até 15% da FSC em ra es para tilápia-do-Nilo na fase de 5 a 150 g de peso vivo. The study evaluated the performance and carcass composition index of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed with diets containing increasing levels of spray-dried blood meal (SDBM) and vat-dried blood meal (VDBM) and formulated based on digestible amino acids. Two hundred and fifty-two fingerlings were distributed in a completelyrandomized design, in a (2 x 4) + 1 factorial model, two types of blood meal with four levels of each blood meal in the diet, and a control diet (without blood meal), with four replications. The treatments consisted of soybean meal-based control diet, with 34%digestible protein (DP) and 3,200 kcal of digestible energy kg-1 (DE), plus four diets formulated with SDBM and four diets with VDBM, containing 5, 10, 15 and 20% of each meal in feed, maintaining identical DP, DE, phosphorus, calcium, lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan levels as those of the control diet. The results show that it is possible to use up to 15% VDBM in diets of Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) between 5 to 150 g of body weight.
Morphological changes of the intestinal mucosa of broilers and layers as affected by fasting before sample collection

Abstract: the present study aimed at evaluating the histo-morphological changes resulting from different fasting periods before the collection of tissue samples in different segments of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) of 7-d-old male chicks of a broiler and a layer strain. a completely randomized experimental design in in a 2x7 factorial arrangement, being two strains with different growth rates (ross 308 and hyline? w36) and seven fasting periods (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours ), with six replicates, totaling 84 birds. the comparison of the morphometrics of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum of broiler and layer chicks demonstrated faster digestive tract development in broilers relative to layers. the fasting period caused morphological changes in the liver and small and large intestines in both strains. therefore, it must be highlighted that in studies involving organ weights and intestinal morphometrics, birds must not be submitted to fasting before tissue collection.
