Abstract:

A minimal generalized time-bandwidth product-based coarse-to-fine strategy is proposed with one novel ideas highlighted: adopting a coarse-to-fine strategy to speed up the searching process. The simulation results on synthetic and real signals show the validity of the proposed method.

Computations of Galois Representations Associated to Modular Forms

Abstract: We propose an improved algorithm for computing mod $\ell$ Galois representations associated to a cusp form $f$ of level one. The proposed method allows us to explicitly compute the case with $\ell=29$ and $f$ of weight $k=16$, and the cases with $\ell=31$ and $f$ of weight $k=12,20, 22$. All the results are rigorously proved to be correct. As an example, we will compute the values modulo $31$ of Ramanujan's tau function at some huge primes up to a sign. Also we will give an improved higher bound on Lehmer's conjecture for Ramanujan's tau function.
Statistical Kinetics of Phase-Transforming Nanoparticles in LiFePO4 Porous Electrodes

Abstract: Using a simple mathematical model, we demonstrate that statistical kinetics of phase-transforming nanoparticles in porous electrodes results in macroscopic non-monotonic transient currents, which could be misinterpreted as the nucleation and growth mechanism by the Kolmogorov-Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (KJMA) theory. Our model decouples the roles of nucleation and surface reaction in the electrochemically driven phase-transformation process by a special activation rate and the mean particle-filling speed of active nanoparticles, which can be extracted from the responses of porous electrodes to identify the dynamics in single composing nanoparticles.

Abstract: Lehmer's conjecture for Ramanujan's tau function says that $\tau(n) \neq 0$ for all $n$. In this paper, we generalize D. H. Lehmer's result to give a sufficient condition for level one cusp forms $f$ such that the smallest $n$ for which the Fourier coefficients $a_n(f)=0$ must be a prime. For the unique cusp form $\Delta_{k}$ of level one and weight k with $k=16, 20, 22$, we achieve a large bound $B_k$ of $n$ such that $a_n(\Delta_k)\ne0$ for all $n
Study on Quality Traits for Steamed Bread Made from 25 Representative Wheat Varieties in Shandong Province  [PDF]

Abstract: In order to study steamed bread quality traits and explore good wheat cultivars, 25 wheat cultivars grown in Shandong province were used through one-process fermentation procedure to examine the variability of steamed bread quality traits and the correlation between quality and score. The results showed that all the steamed bread quality traits expressed large variable coefficient except volume, L* value, l* value and cohesiveness traits, which suggested that the genetic diversity made from wheat in Shandong province was large. The average comprehensive score of the steamed bread was 76.8 for the tested 25 varieties, and ten varieties reached the good steamed bread level, which were Liangxing 99, Luyuan 205, Jimai 22, Jinan 17, Tainong 19, Wennong 17, Huaiyin 84137, and Huaimai 8. The main quality factors affecting the steamed bread score were volume, L* value, A* value, hardness, chewiness, and adhesiveness. Among these factors, the adhesiveness has a significantly positive correlation with the hardness and cohesive, and the volume has a significantly positive correlation with the A* value. The volume, L* value has a significantly positive correlation with score, A* value, hardness and chewiness, and gumminess has a significantly negative correlation with the score. There was no correlation between the score and other traits. The results will benefit the understanding of steamed bread quality in wheat cultivated in Shandong.

Generation of mutants with developmental defects in zebrafish by ENU mutagenesis

Abstract: As a good model for studying early development of vertebrates, zebrafish (Danio rerio) is attracting more and more attention. Following ENU mutagenesis, 320 F2 families were established. Mutants, which showed defects in epiboly, axis, somite, head, and cardiac and blood systems, were identified by observing morphological changes in F3 embryos. So far, 35 mutant lines have been established, the majority of which showed anomalies in axis and somite formation. These mutant lines provide useful genetic resources for cloning of the mutant genes and for studying mechanisms of early development of vertebrate embryos.
Purification and Characterization of a Cold-Adapted Lipase from Oceanobacillus Strain PT-11

Abstract: We isolated a moderately halophilic lipase-producing bacterium from the saline soil. Based on the morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analysis, the isolate PT-11 was postulated to be a novel species identified as Oceanobacillus rekensis PT-11. The lipase was purified 2.50-fold by Q-Sepharose FF and SP-Sepharose FF chromatography and its molecular mass was estimated to be 23.5 kDa by SDS-PAGE. It was highly active over the broad temperature ranging from 10 to 35°C and showed up to 80% of the maximum activity at 10°C indicating the lipase to be a typical cold-adapted enzyme. The enzyme activity was slightly enhanced by Na+, Li+ and K+. Incubation with detergents, such as Tween-20 and Tween-80, slightly inhibited the enzyme activity; while Triton X-100decreased the enzyme activity. The enzyme was fairly stable in the presence of long-chain alcohols but was highly denatured in hydrophilic solvents such as acetone or short-chain alcohols (C1–C3).
QTL Mapping for chinese northern-style steamed bread specific volume  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) with additive effects, epistatic effects for CNSB specific volume in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), were studied in cultivars Huapei 3 and Yumai 57 (Triticum aestivum L.). The DH population and the parents were planted in 2007 and 2008 in Tai’An and 2008 in Suzhou. QTL analyses were performed using the software of IciMapping v2.2 based on the mixed linear model. Five putative QTLs for CNSB specific volume were detected on 5 chromosomes where single QTLs explained 5.11% to 9.75% of phenotypic variations. All of them had negative effects on specific volume and were contributed by Yumai 57 alleles. Qsv-1B was detected in both environment 1 and 3 with 13.88% and 4.83% phenotypic variations which had positive effects and was transmitted by Huapei 3 alleles. Fourteen pairs of QTLs with epistatic effects were detected for specific volume. Seven major QTLs, Qsv-1B/Qsv-3A, Qsv-2D/Qsv-3A, Qsv-3A/Qsv- 5B1, Qsv-1B/Qsv-6D, Qsv-2D/Qsv-4D, Qsv-4A/ Qsv-6B and Qsv-3A/Qsv-7D could account for 13.88%、20.39%、18.88%、12.31%、18.78%、11.98%, and 17.05% of the phenotypic variation of specific volume. The information obtained in this study will be useful for manipulating the QTLs for CNSB specific volume property by molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS).
Efficient polymer light-emitting diodes with violet blue emission based on blends of PSiF6-PPP and PSiFC6C6

Abstract: Efficient polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) with violet blue emission were fabricated using blends of copolymers of paraphenylene-cosilafluorene (PSiF6-PPP) and polymer of poly (9,9′-alkyl-3,6-silafluorene) (PSiFC6C6). The performances of the devices are sensitive to the blend ratio. When the mass ratio of PSiF6-PPP to PSiFC6C6 is 1: 3, the highest external quantum efficiency is 1.96% at luminance of 105 cd · m 2, its electroluminescent (EL) spectrum peaks at 398 nm and full width at half maximum is 67 nm. The improvements of the device performances were due to the energy transfer from PSiFC6C6 to PSiF6-PPP and the balanced injection of electrons and holes.
