Tensor-SIFT based Earth Mover's Distance for Contour Tracking

Abstract: Contour tracking in adverse environments is a challenging problem due to cluttered background, illumination variation, occlusion, and noise, among others. This paper presents a robust contour tracking method by contributing to some of the key issues involved, including (a) a region functional formulation and its optimization; (b) design of a robust and effective feature; and (c) development of an integrated tracking algorithm. First, we formulate a region functional based on robust Earth Mover's distance (EMD) with kernel density for distribution modeling, and propose a two-phase method for its optimization. In the first phase, letting the candidate contour be fixed, we express EMD as the transportation problem and solve it by the simplex algorithm. Next, using the theory of shape derivative, we make a perturbation analysis of the contour around the best solution to the transportation problem. This leads to a partial differential equation (PDE) that governs the contour evolution. Second, we design a novel and effective feature for tracking applications. We propose a dimensionality reduction method by tensor decomposition, achieving a low-dimensional description of SIFT features called Tensor-SIFT for characterizing local image region properties. Applicable to both color and gray-level images, Tensor-SIFT is very distinctive, insensitive to illumination changes, and noise. Finally, we develop an integrated algorithm that combines various techniques of the simplex algorithm, narrow-band level set and fast marching algorithms. Particularly, we introduce an inter-frame initialization method and a stopping criterion for the termination of PDE iteration. Experiments in challenging image sequences show that the proposed work has promising performance.

Abstract:

Searching for the influencing factors on team decision-making quality is the hot issue in academic circles and business circles. Based on summarizing the main influencing factors on team decision-making quality, this thesis divides the main influencing factors into team composition factors and team process factors and researches the internal relationship between them. Targeted at the field decision making, this thesis analyzes the influencing process of the main factors on decision-making quality, and constructs the conceptual model of “influencing factors-information sharing-decision-making quality”. This model not only combines the main influencing factors correctly, but also exposes the “black box” between the influencing factors and decision-making quality in field decision making, which can make up for no relative research for the field decision making in the previous studies.

Abstract: Hospital building design is important as it is the place where bacteria and microorganisms concentrate. Poor ventilation system and layout traps disease causing pathogens, threatens the lives of many frontline workers such as doctors, nurses, and health care assistants. While design knowledge sharing by IT ensures a rapid knowledge sharing among designers from all over the world, what are their motivations? Few or no paper has studied this issue. This paper studies this base on 4 traditional motivation theories: Theory X, Theory Y, Reinforcement theory, Two factor theory. Results show that positive reinforcement theory and motivation factors in two factor theory provide better explanation.
The Proteasome Inhibitor Bortezomib Enhances ATRA-Induced Differentiation of Neuroblastoma Cells via the JNK Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Pathway

Abstract: Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor in childhood. Differentiated human NBs are associated with better outcome and lower stage; induction of differentiation is considered to be therapeutically advantageous. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) has been shown to induce the differentiation of neuroblastoma (NB) cell lines. The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib inhibits cell growth and angiogenesis in NBs. Here, we investigated the synergistic effect between bortezomib and ATRA in inducing NB cell differentiation in different NB cell lines. Bortezomib combined with ATRA had a significantly enhanced antiproliferative effect. This inhibition was characterized by a synergistic increase in neuronal differentiation. At the same time, the combination therapy showed little neuronal toxicity which was assessed in primary cultures of rat cerebellar granule cells by the MTT assay, PI staining. The combination of bortezomib and ATRA triggered increased differentiation through the activation of proteins, including RARα, RARβ, RARγ, p-JNK and p21, compared with ATRA treatment alone. Using JNK inhibitor SP600125 to block JNK-dependent activity, the combination therapy-induced neuronal differentiation was partially attenuated. In addition, p21 shRNA had no effect on the combination therapy-induced neuronal differentiation. The in vivo antitumor activities were examined in human NB cell xenografts and GFP-labeled human NB cell xenografts. Treatment of human NB cell CHP126-bearing nude mice with ATRA plus bortezomib resulted in more significant tumor growth inhibition than mice treated with either drug alone. These findings provide the rationale for the development of a new therapeutic strategy for NB based on the pharmacological combination of ATRA and bortezomib.
Cryogenic induced phase separation of chitosan solution

Abstract: The chitosan porous membrane was prepared by extending the principle of thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) for the polymer-diluent system to the polymer solution at arnbient temperature to carry out the cryogenic induced phase separation (CIPS). The porous membrane obtained was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and gas permeability. It was found that a specific lacy pore structure morphology corresponding to the TIPS’ solicd-liquid phase separation was formed in the demixing process and the porosity could be more than 70%. The research of demixing mechanism and membrane-formation process showed that the membrane was stacked through porous lamella. The porosity of membrane increases and the pore diameter decreases with increasing solidtfying temperature. Both the porosity and pore diameter decrease with the chitosan concentration increase.
Inhibitory effects of chitosan on superoxide anion radicals and lipid free radicals

Abstract: With the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, the inhibitory effects of chitosan on superoxide anion radicals and linoleic acid lipid radicals were found. The inhibitory ratio E for these two kinds of radicals is in proportion to the concentration of chitosan. It was also observed that E for linoleic acid lipid radicals increased with the increase of the degree of deacetylation and decreased with the increase of the molecular weight of chitosan.

Abstract: Traditional Mean Shift (MS) algorithm can only follow objects with translation and scale change, and fails to handle objects with similarity transformation or complex affine transformation. To address this problem, the paper presents two improved algorithms. The first one focuses on the affine motion. According to the theory of Singular Value Decomposition, the affine matrix can be factored into product of two rotation matrixes and one diagonal matrix, based on which a new candidate model is proposed. With Bhattacharyya coefficient as a similarity function, the object tracking is formulated as an optimization problem, and the corresponding MS algorithm can be derived by calculating the first derivative of the similarity function with respect to affine parameters and setting them to be zero. Furthermore, a new candidate model is proposed that handles similarity transformation, and the corresponding MS algorithm can be obtained that estimates the translation vector and rotation angle. Experimental results show that, the proposed algorithms can track objects with similarity or affine tranformations, and have better tracking performance than the traditional one.

Towards Effective Codebookless Model for Image Classification

Abstract: The bag-of-features (BoF) model for image classification has been thoroughly studied over the last decade. Different from the widely used BoF methods which modeled images with a pre-trained codebook, the alternative codebook free image modeling method, which we call Codebookless Model (CLM), attracted little attention. In this paper, we present an effective CLM that represents an image with a single Gaussian for classification. By embedding Gaussian manifold into a vector space, we show that the simple incorporation of our CLM into a linear classifier achieves very competitive accuracy compared with state-of-the-art BoF methods (e.g., Fisher Vector). Since our CLM lies in a high dimensional Riemannian manifold, we further propose a joint learning method of low-rank transformation with support vector machine (SVM) classifier on the Gaussian manifold, in order to reduce computational and storage cost. To study and alleviate the side effect of background clutter on our CLM, we also present a simple yet effective partial background removal method based on saliency detection. Experiments are extensively conducted on eight widely used databases to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our CLM method.
Relationship between Interleukin-10 ?1082A/G Polymorphism and Risk of Ischemic Stroke: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Objective To analyze the association between ?1082A/G polymorphism in interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene and ischemic stroke (IS) risk by meta-analysis. Methods We carried out a systematic electronic search in PubMed, BIOSIS Previews, Science Direct, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Database, Weipu database and WANGFANG Database. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were calculated to assess the strength of the association. Results 7 studies were included. There was no significant association between IL-10 ?1082A/G polymorphism and IS risk under all genetic models in overall estimates (A vs. G: OR = 1.23,95%CI = 0.85–1.79;AA vs. GG: OR = 1.01,95%CI = 0.47–2.19; AG vs. GG: OR = 0.76, 95%CI = 0.38–1.55; AA+AG vs. GG: OR = 0.89,95%CI = 0.46–1.73; AA vs. AG+GG: OR = 1.39, 95%CI = 0.91–2.13). Similarly, no associations were found in subgroup analysis based on ethnicity and source of controls. However, removing the study deviating from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) produced statistically significant associations for overall estimates under recessive model(AA VS. AG+GG OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.04–2.42) and among Asians in all genetic models (A VS.G OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.07–2.53; AA vs. GG OR1.91, 95% CI 1.31–2.80; AG vs. GG OR1.44, 95% CI 1.09–1.91; AA+AG vs. GG OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.18–2.01;AA VS. AG+GG OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.07–3.00). Even after Bonferroni correction, the associations were observed still significantly in Asians under the two models (AA vs. GG OR1.91, 95% CI 1.31–2.80, P = 0.0008; AA+AG vs. GG OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.18–2.01, P = 0.001). Conclusion This meta-analysis indicates that IL10 ?1082 A/G polymorphism is associated with IS susceptibility in Asians and the ?1082 A allele may increase risk of IS in Asians. Considering the sample size is small and between-study heterogeneity is remarkable, more studies with subtle design are warranted in future.
