Abstract: We will begin a study of William of Ockham from a small case involving the conferences Foucault taught more than six centuries after the death of the Franciscan philosopher not only, of course, due to a simple and supposed convergence in the nominalist tshared by both authors, but because, rather, we must pay attention to how the Foucaultian precaution of method exposes a persistent and unquestioned validity for our times of a central question to the medieval philosophical debate, namely, the quarrel of universals. The late modernity or, for some, the postmodernity, does not appear, therefore, free from those witch are by excellence the remains of pre-modern and, in this sense, to study the other in relation to our own time has ensured its relevance by the discovery that, in Foucaultian terms, perhaps the other most likly resembles the same then our belief in progress would normally believe. To go back to the Middle Ages is definitely not to go back to obscurity, or to mee something like an exotic that has long been obsolete by the lights of modern reason. As stated by the eminent medievalist Etienne Gilson, “modern philosophy did not sustain a fight to win the rights of reason against the Middle Ages, but, rather, the Middle Ages has won them for itself, and through the act by which the seventeenth century thought to be abolishing the work of previous centuries only continued it. ”
Linear-Time Temporal Logic Control of Discrete Event Models of Cooperative Robots

Abstract: A Discrete Event System (DES) is a discrete state space dynamic system that evolves in accordance with the instantaneous occurrence, at possibly unknown times, of physical events. Given a DES, its behavior (the sequence of displayed events) may not satisfy a set of logical performance objectives. The purpose of Supervisory Control is to restrict that behavior in order to achieve those objectives. Linear-Time Temporal Logic (LTL) is an extension of Propositional Logic which allows reasoning over an infinite sequence of states. We will use this logical formalism as a way to specify our performance objectives for a given DES and build a supervisor that restricts the DES’ behavior to those objectives by construction. Several simulated application examples illustrate the developed method.
Numerical Simulations in Two-Dimensional Neural Fields

Abstract: In the present paper we are concerned with a numerical algorithm for the approximation of the two-dimensional neural field equation with delay. We consider three numerical examples that have been analysed before by other authors and are directly connected with real world applications. The main purposes are 1) to test the performance of the mentioned algorithm, by comparing the numerical results with those obtained by other authors; 2) to analyse with more detail the properties of the solutions and take conclusions about their physical meaning.
Numerical Solution of the Neural Field Equation in the Two-dimensional Case

Abstract: We are concerned with the numerical solution of a class integro-differential equations, known as Neural Field Equations, which describe the large-scale dynamics of spatially structured networks of neurons. These equations have many applications in Neuroscience and Robotics. We describe a numerical method for the approximation of solutions in the two-dimensional case, including a space-dependent delay in the integrand function. Compared with known algorithms for this type of equation we propose a scheme with higher accuracy in the time discretisation. Since computational efficiency is a key issue in this type of calculations, we use a new method for reducing the complexity of the algorithm. The convergence issues are discussed in detail and a number of numerical examples is presented, which illustrate the performance of the method.
Dysphagia as a Presenting Symptom of Myasthenia Gravis—Case Report  [PDF]

Dysphagia is a common symptom in otolaryngology, but neuromuscular causes are rarely diagnostic hypotheses to be considered. The Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disease which is characterized by muscle weakness that can affect the muscles of the face, oral cavity, pharynx or esophagus and may present with swallowing disorders. The authors present the case of a 68-year-old man who went to the emergency department of otolaryngology complaining of dysphagia. After the examination and diagnostic exams, it was diagnosed as Myasthenia Gravis. The authors conclude that the clinical suspicion should not be forgotten in order to initiate timely treatment to the effective control of the disease and complement with functional tests according to the complaints, so that it can be followed up and start rehabilitation of the patient.

Abstract: The technological evolution emerges a unified (Industrial) Internet of Things network, where loosely coupled smart manufacturing devices build smart manufacturing systems and enable comprehensive collaboration possibilities that increase the dynamic and volatility of their ecosystems. On the one hand, this evolution generates a huge field for exploitation, but on the other hand also increases complexity including new challenges and requirements demanding for new approaches in several issues. One challenge is the analysis of such systems that generate huge amounts of (continuously generated) data, potentially containing valuable information useful for several use cases, such as knowledge generation, key performance indicator (KPI) optimization, diagnosis, predication, feedback to design or decision support. This work presents a review of Big Data analysis in smart manufacturing systems. It includes the status quo in research, innovation and development, next challenges, and a comprehensive list of potential use cases and exploitation possibilities.
Constant mean curvature one surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space using the Bianchi-Calò method

Abstract: in this note we present a method for constructing constant mean curvature on surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space in terms of holomorphic data first introduced in bianchi's lezioni di geometria differenziale of 1927, therefore predating by many years the modern approaches due to bryant, small and others. besides its obvious historical interest, this note aims to complement bianchi's analysis by deriving explicit formulae for cmc-1 surfaces and comparing the various approaches encountered in the literature.

Abstract: based on sustainable development principles, this paper evaluates artisanal gold mining activity in engenho podre. this study followed the hypothesis that the implementation of environmental management according to a conduct adjustment agreement firmed by the cooperativa dos garimpeiros de mariana (coopergama), associated with operational performance improvement would permit continuation of this activity in a sustainable way from the environmental, socioeconomic and cultural point of view. although still illegal, from the technical point of view, the artisanal mining at engenho podre is adopting environmentally-accepted strategies to promote reasonable socioeconomic development. however, administrative issues and lack of investments still affect the sustainability of such practices in the long-term. this paper shows that when good administrative and environmental practices are adopted, it is possible to meet the sustainable development principles in an artisanal mining activity.
