Abstract: Non-atrophic active chronic gastritis (ACG) is characterized by the presence of H. pylori in the gastric epithelium, known to be one of the first steps that precede progression to gastric adenocarcinoma. Inactive chronic gastritis (ICG) suggests that the patient has H. pylori gastritis, but this diagnosis is rarely made in routine histopathology. Clinical manifestations associated with H. pylori infection are potentially due to differences in virulence between strains; however, it is unclear if the progression of ACG to ICG depends on the H. pylori strain. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of the virulence factors of H. pylori found in patients with ACG and ICG, and its influence on the development of ICG. A significant association was observed between H. pylori detection by histological examination and the activity of gastritis (p < 0.01). Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) (>1 year) was reported by 28.6% of the ACG group and 42.5% of the ICG, while no evidence of association between long-term use of PPI and decreased inflammation was found in the patients studied. The genes cagA, cagE and virB11 were statistically associated with ACG (p = 0.01, p < 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). In the vacAs1 allele groups, ACG was associated with the most virulent group (p = 0.0015), while ICG was associated with the less virulent group (p < 0.001). The rate of co-infection was significantly higher in ICG than in ACG cases (p = 0.02). In conclusion, this study points to the role of virulent strains of H. pylori in the non-resolution of gastritis.

Um problema de saias: dificuldades de representa??o do género na linguagem pictográfica
Bessa,Pedro;
Ex aequo , 2009,
Abstract: the article deals with signage, traffic signs and way-finding systems, which use pictures of individual objects to express abstract concepts. this requires learning and context to be understood. but pictography seems to have other limitations. when compared to verbal language, a major example of these limitations is the representation of gender. in 2005, a survey of 49 signage systems at the university of aveiro concluded the female gender was underrepresented, and heavily stereotyped. notwithstanding, the article analyses a few recent attempts to use non-sexist traffic signs and signage, in order to determine whether it is possible to reform or improve pictographic languages.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2011001200021
Abstract: we carried out a review that included results of randomized trials that made a comparison between percutaneous coronary intervention (pci) and coronary artery bypass grafting (cabg). the 25 selected trials involved 12,305 patients, 11,103 of whom were from studies in patients with multi-vessel disease and 1,212 were from studies in patients with single lesion of the left anterior descending (lad). in the studies of multi-vessel disease patients, the pci showed a trend towards lower early mortality (1.2% versus 2%) and lower incidence of stroke: 0.7% versus 1.65%. there was no difference in the intermediate mortality (3.8% versus 3.8%). there was a trend towards the superiority of cabg in late mortality (10.5% versus 9.6%). the difference was exclusively due to "balloon era" studies, with a trend towards an inversion in the "stent era" (9.6% versus 9.9%). in studies of single lesion of lad, there was no significant difference in any endpoint. the aggregation of results from nine studies that assessed late mortality in diabetic patients showed a difference in favor of surgery (21.3% versus 15.9%). two studies that evaluated main coronary artery disease did not show a significant difference in mortality at one year (3.9% versus 4.7%). the incidence of repeat revascularization was consistently higher in pci, despite the progressive improvement in results in the stent era.

Abstract: A significant number of stallions produce low quality ejaculates with high sensibility to chilling. Single Layer Centrifugation (SLC) with Andro-coll-ETM has been presented as an efficient method of selecting good quality spermatozoa. In the current study, changes in sperm quality (motility, viability, acrosome integrity and DNA damage) occurring during storage at 5?C for a maximum of 72 h, were investigated. For that, one ejaculate from 12 stallions was split in two aliquots: control and SLC-selected. Both aliquots were chilled and stored at 5?C and spermatozoa were evaluated for motility, viability and acrosome integrity at 24, 48 and 72 h post collection. DNA damage was evaluated at 48 h post collection using the comet assay. In the SLC-selected aliquots, there was a significant improvement in terms of progressive motility (0 h: P = 0.005; 24 h: P < 0.001; 48 h: P < 0.001; 72 h: P < 0.001) and percentage of live spermatozoa with intact acrosome (24 h: P = 0.003; 48 h: P = 0.003; 72 h: P = 0.004). The DNA damage (in Arbitrary Units) was not different between SLC- selected and control samples (P > 0.05). SLC with Androcoll-ETM improved semen quality prolonging sperm longevity of chilled semen (P = 0.012). This positive effect was more evident in ejaculates most sensitive to chilling that had a sharp decrease in motility in the first 24 h of refrigeration and for all ejaculates at 72 h post-chilling. Therefore, this method reveals to be a useful technique for selecting spermatozoa and maintain sperm quality during storage.

Abstract: We consider a compact 3-dimensional boundaryless Riemannian manifold M and the set of divergence-free (or zero divergence) vector fields without singularities, then we prove that this set has a C1-residual such that any vector field inside it is Anosov or else its elliptical orbits are dense in the manifold M.
