Organiza??es & Sociedade , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-92302012000300002
Abstract: the objective of this work is to understand the factors that influence the motivation for sustained voluntary work at the núcleo espírita nosso lar, a spiritual organization located in southern brazil. the study was conducted using qualitative methods for ethnographic research. empirical data was collected using participatory observation techniques and in-depth interviews, as well as document analysis and information given by the managers. for the analysis and categorization of the material an analytical model developed by penner was used, composed of demographic characteristics, dispositional and organizational categories and the identity of the role of a volunteer. it was found that demographic characteristics do not influence sustained voluntary work. however, certain dispositional categories - personal beliefs and values, pro-social personality and motives connected to the volunteer - do influence the studied phenomenon. as for the organizational categories, it was concluded that organizational attributes and practices also influence sustained voluntary work. no evidence was found as to whether the relationship with the organization influenced sustained voluntary work.

No entanto, determinadas categorias disposicionais - cren as e valores pessoais, personalidade pró-social e motivos relacionados a voluntariado - denotam in uenciar o fen meno estudado. ---- Motivation for Continued Voluntary Work: an ethnographic survey in a spiritual organization ---- ABSTRACT ---- The objective of this work is to understand the factors that in uence the motivation for sustained voluntary work at the Núcleo Espírita Nosso Lar, a spiritual organization located in Southern Brazil. The European Union and minority languages: Evolution, achievements and contradictions in the light of the Treaty of Lisbon
Lorenzo Piccoli
Interdisciplinary Political Studies , 2011,
Abstract: The issue of minorities has long been perceived as an obstacle to European integration. This paper seeks to unravel the complex nature of minority language (ML) policy in the European Union (EU), arguing that a long way has been travelled since 1981. From that moment onwards, the European Parliament (EP) began dealing with minority issues starting from the functional area of minority languages (MLs). This has led to two outcomes: on the one hand, with the Treaty of Lisbon (ToL) the EU has finally adopted a more embracing notion of minority rights, recognizing linguistic diversity and the protection of the persons belonging to minorities as part of its fundamental values; on the other hand, the European Commission is increasingly active in supporting the promotion of ML through financial programmes. This is evidence that ML policy at the European level, complementary to those of the single Member States, is very fragmented and barely structured, but still effective in so far as it legally protects and financially supports ML.
For an “iconography of the siege” in the figurative culture of 14th century Po plain
Fausta Piccoli
Reti Medievali Rivista , 2007,
Esso sembra obbedire a convenzioni figurative piuttosto precise. The theme of the siege of a city is depicted with a certain frequency in frescoes and above all in miniatures or illustrated cartoons of a manuscript. It seems to obey rather precise figurative conventions. It generally deals with environmental portrayals simultaneously (for that which is frequently illustrated in biblical facts or the classicism or the tradition of chivalry) with battles in front of the walls with numerous variants. Less attention is paid to the reality of the city under siege and the reaction of the citizens. We also perceive that around the end of the fourteenth century, greater attention was paid to the “courteous” and chivalrous dimension.

Redrawing Identity Boundaries through Integration Policies: Strategies of Inclusion/Exclusion of Immigrants in Québec and South Tyrol
Lorenzo Piccoli
European Diversity and Autonomy Papers - EDAP , 2013,
Abstract: Following the research agenda introduced by Will Kymlicka, this qualitative study offers an interpretation of how the sub-national elites of Québec and South Tyrol police the integration of immigrants. For these national minority groups, which are constantly undergoing a process of redefinition of their collective identities by differentiating themselves from the Others who do not belong to the in-group, immigrants have progressively become the most significant Others as they are not part of the original system of compromises. This article questions how sub-national elites are handling this relatively new kind of ethnocultural diversity brought about by large-scale permanent immigration on two levels: first, the political narrative of the ruling sub-national parties, their electoral appeals, manifestos and speeches; second, the policy arrangements for the integration of immigrants in education, language and social policy. The initial approach of the article is pessimistic, as it assumes that sub-national elites will marginalize immigrants to please core nationalist supporters. In fact, the hypotheses to be tested are whether the national minority groups of Québec and South Tyrol engage in a process of reconstruction of their ethnic identity bounded by opposition to real or imagined Others – the newcomers; and whether they adopt practical measures that force newcomers to be assimilated into the group or to be marginalized. The comparison between Québec and South Tyrol provides a basic understanding of the impact of immigration in two sub-national polities that are very different, but still adopt similar political narratives and policy strategies with regard to the integration of newcomers.
Time-Optimal Control Problem for the Swing and the Ski
Benedetto Piccoli
Mathematics , 1994,
Abstract: This paper is concerned with a class of time-optimal control problems for the swing and the ski. We first consider the motion of a man standing on a swing. For simplicity, we neglect friction and air resistance and assume that the mass of the swinger is concentrated in his baricenter $B$. For the ski, we use the model considered by Aldo Bressan (1991), with a special approximation of the skier. Our main concern is the existence and the structure of time-optimal controls. As first step, we introduce an auxiliary control system with control entering linearly and show the relationships between this and the original system. We then perform a detailed study of the auxiliary system, using geometric techniques. In turn this provides accurate information on the time-optimal controls for the original system.
Pedestrian flows in bounded domains with obstacles
Benedetto Piccoli,Andrea Tosin
Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1007/s00161-009-0100-x
Abstract: In this paper we systematically apply the mathematical structures by time-evolving measures developed in a previous work to the macroscopic modeling of pedestrian flows. We propose a discrete-time Eulerian model, in which the space occupancy by pedestrians is described via a sequence of Radon positive measures generated by a push-forward recursive relation. We assume that two fundamental aspects of pedestrian behavior rule the dynamics of the system: On the one hand, the will to reach specific targets, which determines the main direction of motion of the walkers; on the other hand, the tendency to avoid crowding, which introduces interactions among the individuals. The resulting model is able to reproduce several experimental evidences of pedestrian flows pointed out in the specialized literature, being at the same time much easier to handle, from both the analytical and the numerical point of view, than other models relying on nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. This makes it suitable to address two-dimensional applications of practical interest, chiefly the motion of pedestrians in complex domains scattered with obstacles.
