Constraints on the environment depence of the neutrino mass from solar and reactor neutrino data
Holanda, Pedro Cunha de;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332007000400017
Abstract: we investigate what can be the role of mass varying neutrinos in several different neutrino oscillation experiments, in particular focusing on the relation between kamland data and solar neutrino experiment results. assuming that the adiabaticity of solar neutrinos evolution in lma-msw scenario is not broken by the inclusion of this new mechanism, we can establish new limits on mavan's parameters by fitting together kamland and solar neutrinos data. we also investigate the role of how non-adiabatic effects in the sun can change this scenario, allowing a larger value of these parameters.
Possible scenario for MaVaN's as the only neutrino flavor conversion mechanism in the Sun
de Holanda, Pedro Cunha
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2008, DOI: 10.1088/1475-7516/2009/07/024
Abstract: Mass Varying neutrino mechanisms were proposed to link the neutrino mass scale with dark energy, addressing the coincidence problem. In some scenarios this mass can present a dependence on the baryonic density felt by neutrinos, creating an effective neutrino mass that depends both on the neutrino and baryonic densities. In this article we investigate the possibility that a neutrino effective mass is the only flavour conversion mechanism acting in neutrino oscillation experiments. We present a parameterization on the environmental effects on neutrino mass that produces the right flavour conversion probabilities for solar and terrestrial neutrinos experiments.
Academic rankings: an approach to rank portuguese universities
Bernardino, Pedro;Marques, Rui Cunha;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362010000100003
Abstract: the academic rankings are a controversial subject in higher education. however, despite all the criticism, academic rankings are here to stay and more and more different stakeholders use rankings to obtain information about the institutions' performance. the two most well-known rankings, the times and the shanghai jiao tong university rankings have different methodologies. the times ranking is based on peer review, whereas the shanghai ranking has only quantitative indicators and is mainly based on research outputs. in germany, the che ranking uses a different methodology from the traditional rankings, allowing the users to choose criteria and weights. the portuguese higher education institutions are performing below their european peers, and the government believes that an academic ranking could improve both performance and competitiveness between institutions. the purpose of this paper is to analyse the advantages and problems of academic rankings and provide guidance to a new portuguese ranking.
Química e literatura na forma o de professores

Educa??o : Teoria e Prática , 2012,
Abstract: This paper is focused on teacher training in chemistry and its multiple dimensions as well as the role played by the representations of chemistry and chemists in influencing their training. The intention here is to develop some ideas related to the diffusion of scientific knowledge and the representations in the chemistry field, considering the literary creation as reference, especially texts where chemistry and chemists appear as elements of confabulation. Finally, there are two examples inspired by some important works published in the nineteenth century, that show us how some stereotypes related to chemists have been developed, how they influence the representations of chemists and why chemistry has been seen as a “mad science”.

Abstract: This study aimed enroll alternative water sources, obtain information about socio-environmental, health and spread the importance of preserving water resources among users of groundwater in the District Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Santa Maria - RS. From 54 alternative sources found, 19 are dug wells, 23 are tube wells, two are sources and 10 wells are disabled. Were administered questionnaires and collected blood and feces of users of alternative sources for clinical analysis. We obtained the number of 109 people, of different ages and socio-economic situations that used groundwater as a source of supply. From this total, 59% reported having no guidance about issues related to water, 63% of households reported having knowledge and that contaminated water could lead harm to human health. Were found no traces of contamination in the feces and blood collected from the users of alternative sources. The large number of users of wells and springs and low levels of knowledge about waterborne diseases makes necessary conduct semiannual reviews of water diagnosing changes in water quality standards, thus preventing possible health problems related to water.

Abstract: Population growth over the years resulted in a greater concern for the environment and the various environmental impacts caused by industrial activities and population in general. With the need to reduce their occurrence, tools were developed to make possible the avoidance of impacts, including the assessment of environmental impacts. Such tools are essential to the definition of requirements aimed at the environmental and social performance of these materials. This study aimed to describe the main environmental impacts associated with the production of bricks, tiles and ceramics in the city of Santa Maria - RS, and to identify strategies and measures for mitigation and compensation that may be adopted by the sector. Some items such as groundwater contamination are shown in local concern as well as the removal of the organic layer of soil. The visual and noise pollution is another concern, since the study development has not a curtain in the right place.
Filtros para água para da Chuva: Análise de Eficiência
Engenharia Ambiental : Pesquisa e Tecnologia , 2010,
Abstract: The improper use of water in the world today is a constant concern, too much drinking water is wasted for certain purposes could be used water not potable, but yes, good clean water and rainwater. An alternative to using rainwater with higher quality is to filter it in sand filters. The objectives of this study were: (a) estimate the maximum flow of three different kind of filters, (b) determine in laboratory the effectiveness of the three different compositions; (c) compare the efficiency of the three filter systems to retain solid waste present in rainwater, allowing the improvement of its quality . The experimental work was conducted at the Laboratory of Environmental Engineering Center Franciscan University using as a sand filter a water tank of 250 liters with filter materials such as gravel, sand, geotextile and polyurethane sponge. Results obtained by the filters designed for filtration of rainwater flows were 11,800 L. h-1 (filter 1), 630 L. h-1 (filter 2) and 9300 L. h-1 (filter 3). Filter 2 showed a improved efficiency comparison between the filters, but also lower flow rate.

Engenharia Sanitaria e Ambiental , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-41522009000200016
Abstract: urban solid waste services usually act as natural monopolies and so, among others reasons, they are characterized by reduced incentives towards efficiency and innovation. the evaluation of performance and, in particular, the application of benchmarking can assume an excellent role to challenge this situation. in portugal, the market of urban solid waste is characterized by 29 "wholesale" firms (transportation, treatment and separate collection) and hundreds of "retail" utilities (collection). the collection activity is still largely provided directly by the municipalities. the current study intends to evaluate the efficiency of the portuguese "wholesale" market of solid waste services, encompassing the whole continental portuguese population, using the new robust technique of non-parametric benchmarking technique of data envelopment analysis (dea), based on the concept of order-m. the outcomes depicted significant inefficiency. in the case of efficiently, firms that would have a reduction of costs of more than 100 million euros in 2005 operated.
