Um imperialismo possível: fluxos migratórios e estratégias colonialistas na Europa mediterranea (1870-1914)
Gonalves, Paulo Cesar;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742011000200016
Abstract: this paper analyses some of the various implications of the migratory flow from the main countries supplying workers during the period known as the new emigration: italy, spain and portugal. considering their peculiarities, the objective is to identify the strategies of each country that transformed this movement into a factor of economic development: conquest of markets, creation and promotion of colonies, use and protection of remittances from emigrated ones. with its kingdom in formation, and the largest source of emigrants, italy had naturally followed the paths that revealed emigration as one of the agents of national prosperity, in contrast to portugal and spain.

Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.512265

Introduction: Studies on attitudes and practices are increasingly used but not specifically related to the motivations for the use of reproductive health care among women of fertile age, living in urban areas and in different social contexts. Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the associations between the variables of social status (degree of poverty in the studied groups) and the variables of fecundity (representations, tensions, practices and control of fertility) and, in addition, to compare access to health care in the different studied groups, assessing the association between use of maternal health care and poverty in urban areas. Design: A case-control study was conducted in the Municipality of Lisbon, Portugal, with a total sample of 1513 women of fertile age: 499 cases of women considered very poor were selected from the database of beneficiaries of RSI (Social Welfare Payment for Inclusion); 1014 controls (two controls for each selected case), divided as 507 poor women selected from the other beneficiaries of Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon and 507 non-poor women selected from four Health Centers from the Municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. A total of 1054 women answered the questionnaire: 304 cases (response rate of 61%) and 750 (response rate of 74%) controls. The statistical analysis involved descriptive analysis and multinomial logistic regression. Results: The analysis confirms the association between poverty and patterns and representations of fecun

dity regarding pregnancy planning. The results of this study thus show the existence of different distributions on several variables and the gradients of poverty. Regarding access to health care, the major impact of poverty on women

Considera es Teóricas em Torno do Reducionismo Funcionalista em Ciências da Religi o
Paulo Gonalves Silva Filho
REVER : Revista de Estudos da Religi?o , 2004,
Abstract: Mainly interested in the tension between functionalist and reductionist theories on the one hand and the approach of Mircea Eliade on the other hand, the article reviews the formation of a theory of religion and the historical circumstances under which its respective proponents developed their ideas. The article’ s purpose is to overcome the contradictions between the two theoretical currents by applying the concepts of "tradition" and "de-tradition" to the debate.
Self-Assembled Dextrin Nanogel as Curcumin Delivery System  [PDF]
Catarina Gonalves, Paula Pereira, Peter Schellenberg, Paulo J. Coutinho, Francisco M. Gama
Journal of Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology (JBNB) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jbnb.2012.32024
Abstract: Curcumin is a natural polyphenol with anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Its therapeutic potential is substantially hindered by the rather low water solubility and bioavailability, hence the need for suitable carriers. In this study, we show that self-assembled nanogels obtained from hydrophobically modified dextrin are effective curcumin nanocarriers. The stability and loading efficiency of curcumin-loaded nanogel depends on the nanogel/curcumin ratio. Higher stability of the formulation is achieved in water than in PBS buffer, as evaluated by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence measurements. The in vitro release profile, using sink conditions, indicates that dextrin nanogel may perform as a suitable carrier for the controlled release of curcumin. Biological activity of curcumin-loaded nanogel in HeLa cell cultures was assessed using the MTS assay.
Influence of Uncertainties on the Dynamic Buckling Loads of Structures Liable to Asymmetric Postbuckling Behavior
Paulo B. Gon alves,Donald Mark Santee
Mathematical Problems in Engineering , 2008, DOI: 10.1155/2008/490137
Abstract: Structural systems liable to asymmetric bifurcation usually become unstable at static load levels lower than the linear buckling load of the perfect structure. This is mainly due to the imperfections present in real structures. The imperfection sensitivity of structures under static loading is well studied in literature, but little is know on the sensitivity of these structures under dynamic loads. The aim of the present work is to study the behavior of an archetypal model of a harmonically forced structure, which exhibits, under increasing static load, asymmetric bifurcation. First, the integrity of the system under static load is investigated in terms of the evolution of the safe basin of attraction. Then, the stability boundaries of the harmonically excited structure are obtained, considering different loading processes. The bifurcations connected with these boundaries are identified and their influence on the evolution of safe basins is investigated. Then, a parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the influence of uncertainties in system parameters and random perturbations of the forcing on the dynamic buckling load. Finally, a safe lower bound for the buckling load, obtained by the application of the Melnikov criterion, is proposed which compare well with the scatter of buckling loads obtained numerically.
Levantamento de insetos associados à batata-doce, Ipomoea batatas, com uso de armadilhas d'água, em Ituporanga, SC
Gonalves, Paulo A.S.;
Anais da Sociedade Entomológica do Brasil , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0301-80591997000100028
Abstract: insects associated with sweet potato, ipomoea batatas were surveyed at ituporanga experimental station, epagri s.a., santa catarina state, brazil, from 1991 to 1994. astylus variegatus germ. (coleoptera: dasytidae) and chaetocnema apricaria suffr. (coleoptera: chrysomelidae) were abundant throughout the crop cycle. the complex of homoptera (aphididae: pemphigida e and cicadellidae), diabrotica speciosa germ., and typophorus nigritus versutus lef. (coleoptera: chrysomelidae) were constantly present but at lower levels than a. variegatus and c. apricaria. systena sp. (coleoptera: chrysomeliadae) and lagria villosa fabr. (coleoptera: lagriidae), were casual and occurred at low frequency.
The epidemiology of malaria in Prábis, Guinea-Bissau
Gonalves, Aldina;Ferrinho, Paulo;Dias, Francisco;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761996000100002
Abstract: this article reports upon a community survey of malaria in prábis, guinea-bissau. a house to house census of the population was initially carried out from august to december 1991(rainy season). after completing the census of each village, the population was invited to come, a week later, to a central point, where they were medically examined and finger-prick blood samples were collected for epidemiological characterization of the malaria situation in the area. the blood films of the one single village were used to compare the sensitivity and specificity of polymerase chain reaction (pcr) with optical microscopy detection of parasites. in another village, the occurrence of parasitaemia was compared in children with and without fever. during the dry season, from march to june 1992, the population in each village was again invited to come to a central point. some of the field procedures were repeated. the study revealed prábis as an administrative sector of guinea-bissau with endemic malaria, mostly due to plasmodium falciparum, but with a significant rate of mixed infections. active transmission occurred throughout the year, but it was more intensive during the rainy season and in the northwestern quadrant of the sector. the level of endemicity of the villages varied from hypo to holoendemic. the factors associated with the differences among villages included village size and predominant economic activity (closeness to rice fields). the transmission paradigm was, most likely, a mixture of malaria of the african wet savannah and malaria associated with irrigated paddy fields. pcr proved to be a sensitive method with low specificity during the dry season. pyraexia of 37.4oc or higher in children aged 2-9 years is not a sensitive indicator of parasitaemia but, it is highly specific and it has a clinically useful predictive value.
Fetuin: a tool to study the block to polyspermy
Gonalves, Paulo Bayard;Graves, Charles;
Ciência Rural , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84781997000100022
Abstract: the effect of fetuin, an a1-glycoprotein that has protease inhibitor activity, on the biock to potyspermy was determined. cumulus-oocyte complexes from ecg primed mice were matured in vitro in the presence of 0, 0.01, 0.1, l and 10mg/ml of fetuin in modifica tcm 199. both in vivo and in vitro matured oocytes were fertilized in the presence of fetuin and incubated for 6 and 24h. fetuin present in a concentration of 1 mg/ml in the ferlilization but not in the maturation medium was able to induce polyspermy in 52.4% of the eggs. there was a positive relationship between concentration of fetuin in the fertilization medium and the proportion of polyspermic eggs (p<0.05). a significant interaclion between 0.1 and l mg/ml of fetuin during maturation and fertilization was observed (p<0.05). the results of these experiments demonstrate the inhibition of the block to polyspermy using a protease inhibitor during the fertilization.
