Abstract: The carpal joint in goats is subject to diseases such as caprine arthritis encephalitis, leading to pain and a reduction in movement. Due to the scarce records of normal parameters, the aim of the present study was to assess the physiochemical and cytological make up of the synovial fluid in the carpal joint of 44 mixed-breed goat without joint disease. The following physiochemical characteristics were assessed: volume (0.94mL ± 0.26 mL), color (colorless to yellow), turbidity (46.50% were limpid), mucin precipitation (firm coagulant in limpid solution) and concentration of total proteins (1.95 ± 0.87 mg/dL). Cytological assessment consisted of global and differential leukocyte counts. The mean global count was 48.02 ± 24.47 cells/μL. The differential count was 25.07 ± 15.86 lymphocytes/μL and 16.31 ± 12.63 large mononucleated cells/μL. It is suggested that the parameter values obtained in the present study may be considered normal for synovial fluid in the carpal joint of adult mixed-breed goats. KEY WORDS: Carpus, goat, joint, synovia. Abstract: external morphological distinction between young selene vomer and s. brownii (carangidae) was studied using multivariate analysis with the purpose to evaluate if other characters than the second dorsal and pelvic fin spines could be used as distinguishing attributes for juveniles fishes. these spines are important distinctive morphological characters, but they can be absent in juvenile fishes or be broken during manipulation. a sample of 389 specimens was collected from beach netting at cai?ara do norte (rn), northeastern brazil, in 2001. each specimen was digitalized and their images provided numerical matrices using scion image and fantomas software. a c-language program was developed and used to calculate 16 euclidean distances and nine homologous landmarks plotted on images. discriminant analysis results revealed that the two selene species was clearly distinguished employing morphometric procedures of diagonally oriented measurements of the antero-posterior body axis.

Abstract: The occurrence of neurological disease is widespread in clinical medicine of domestic animal, but there are few studies documenting the normal composition of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in ovine, especially Santa Ines breed. This study establishes the parameters for normal physiochemical and cytological analysis of cerebrospinal fluid as an aid for diagnosis of neurological disorders in this breed. For this, 40 adult ovine animals, aged between six and 18 months, were used for puncture of lumbosacral CSF. The aspect and color shower a clear and colorless pattern. The average density was 1.006 ± 0.0064, protein concentration was 25.27 ± 6.64 mg/dL and glucose concentration was 46.89 ± 10.99 mg/dL. Enzymes had concentration averages of 116.72 ± 80.79 U/L for creatine kinase; 17.43 ± 11.91 U/L for lactate dehydrogenase and 17.08 ± 3.85 U/L for aspartate aminotransferase. The results for the global cell count were 4.61 ± 4.96 leukocytes/μL (0 to 15 lymphocytes, 0 to 10 monocytes, 1 to 14 neutrophils). Considering the lack of reference data for the physiochemical and cytological CSF analysis of Santa Ines ovine breed, it is recommended that the results obtained in this study are considered normal values for the breed.

Abstract: the nutritive value of five sorghum hybrids (ag-2002, ag-2005e, ag-x202, ag-x213 and ag-x215) silages, cultivated under increasing fertilization levels (control, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 times of the recommended fertilization, corresponding to 0, 45.5, 91, and 182 kg/ha n; 0, 49, 98, and 196 kg/ha de p2o5; and 0, 14, 28, and 56 kg/ha de k2o, besides of 0, 42, 84, and 168 kg/ha s, respectively, that came from the used ammonia sulfate). a complete randomized block design in a factorial 5x4 arrangement (five hybrids and four fertilization levels) with four replicates was used. the seeding time was at 11.06.1997 and plots were harvested at the soft dough stage of grain. from each plot, a sample was collected to fill up the experimental silos, which were opened after 60 days and sampled again to determine the pre drying weight and the nutritive value (cp, fiber fractions and ivdmd). data were interpreted by means of analysis of variance and regression. the hybrid x fertilizer interaction was unrolled independently of its significance. the qualitative factor means were compared by tukey test. the models were chosen based on regression coefficients significance, using student "t" test, at 10% level, and on the determination coefficient. the silages nutritive value differed among the hybrids. ag2005e showed the highest nutritive value, whereas ag2002 and agx213 showed the highest nutrient yield per unit of area. the fertilizers affected the silages nutritive value, but, inconsistently

Abstract: the objective of this research was to evaluate the forage yield, crude protein (cp) contents and dry matter (dm) in vitro digestibility of five forage sorghum hybrids (ag-2002, ag-2005e, ag-x202, ag-x213 e ag-x215), cultivated under four npk fertilization levels. a randomized blocks design, in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replicates, was used. the evaluated hybrids showed high average dm/ha yield and positive linear answer in function of fertilization, except for the high productivity (15.47 t/ha) in the plots without fertilization, in function of soil fertilization and climatic conditions. the hybrids showed different answers for the cp contents, according to the fertilization, in a quadratic way, determining the quadratic behavior for the crude protein yield. ivdmd and digestive dry matter yield showed positive linear answers in function of fertilization, and the digestible dry matter yield was highly correlated (0.91**) with the increase of dm/ha yield.

Abstract: the agronomic characteristics, neutral detergent fiber (ndf), acid detergent fiber (adf) and total soluble and structural carbohydrates contents of five hybrid sorghum (ag-2002, ag-2005e, agx-212, agx-213 e agx-215), cultivated under different fertilization levels, were evaluated. a randomized blocks design, in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replicates, was used. the qualitative factors means were analyzed by means of tukey test at 5 and 1% of probability. the evaluated hybrids showed different proportions of stem (29.01 to 53.38%), leaves (16.70 to 22.64%) and panicle (29.91 to 52.43%), where stem and panicle were highly correlated with height, 0.79** and -0,82**, respectively. dry matter content of whole plant was strongly affected by stem and panicle proportion, where the panicle showed higher dm contents (48.79 to 56,80%) and stem, the smaller (18.86 to 22.54%). the increase in the fertilization levels provided increment in the panicle production, that decreased stem+leaves/panicle proportions and increased panicle proportion and dm content of whole plant. the total soluble carbohydrates contents, in dry matter basis, varied among evaluated hybrids (12.24 to 19.80%) and increased as the fertilization levels increased. the evaluated hybrids showed significant differences among the ndf (57.38 to 62.30), adf (25.29 to 31.56%), hemicellulose (28.56 to 33.87%), cellulose (19.20 to 24.34%) and lignin (6.04 a 6.51%) contents. the ndf and hemicellulose contents decreased as the fertilization levels increased.

Abstract: the relationship between lipid peroxidation, antioxidant defense and diabetic osteopenia remains unclear. this study evaluated the relationship among lipid peroxidation index, antioxidant defense parameters and bone metabolism in a premenopausal diabetic model using measures including thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances concentration (tbars) and reduced glutathione (gsh) content in brain homogenates, histomorphometric analysis, biomechanical testing and bone mineral density (bmd). female wistar rats with regular estrous cycle were divided into two groups: group 1: control rats (n = 15) and group 2: diabetic rats (n = 15). diabetes was induced by alloxan and confirmed by glycemia >250 mg/dl. the lipid peroxidation index, measured by tbars concentration, showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in diabetic animals in comparison to control animals. however, the antioxidant parameter measured by gsh content, was significantly lower (p<0.05) in diabetic animals. histomorphometric analysis showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in femoral trabecular separation together with a significant decrease (p<0.05) in trabecular thickness, and reduced trabecular bone volume in diabetic rats. moreover, biomechanical testing and bmd values were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the diabetic group. thus, our results demonstrated that increased lipid peroxidation and altered antioxidant defense could be related to the development of oxidative stress and diabetic osteopenia in premenopausal rats.

Abstract: comparative morphometrics of ctenosciaena gracilicirrhus, paralonchurus brasiliensis and micropogonias furnieri (teleostei: sciaenidae) by multivariate analysis of truss networks. morphological differentiation among three species of sciaenid fishes, ctenosciaena gracilicirrhus, paralonchurus brasilliensis and micropogonias furnieri, was analyzed by multivariate statistical techniques, using measuraments obtained from truss networks based on anatomical landmarks. principal components analysis of interlandmark distances defined by the truss system showed that the individuais of ctenosciaena gracilicirrhus are different from those of the other two species in relation to shape, being more similar to the individuals of micropogonias furnieri in relation to size.
