Díaz Beveridge,R.; Aparicio Urtasun,J.;
Anales de Medicina Interna , 2003, DOI: 10.4321/S0212-71992003000500009
Abstract: secondary hematological malignancies represent a severe complication of cancer treatment. their real incidence is unknown because of the heterogeneity of primary tumors, their therapies, and their prognosis. the usual presentation is an acute leukemia or myelodisplastic syndrome. two different diseases have been described with particular clinical and cytogenetic features, namely the one associated with alkylating drugs and that related to epipodophylotoxins. diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion, morphological alterations and cytogenetic studies. prognosis is uniformly dismal. conventional chemotherapy is mainly palliative, whereas allogenic transplantation allows the cure of a small percentage of cases. thus, potential curative therapies for solid tumors should be optimized and patients maintained in long-term surveillance programs.

Abstract: The virB locus, which encodes the type IV secretion system, is a major component of virulence in Brucella. A non-polar virB10 mutant and a virB11 deletion mutant were constructed in Brucella canis. In the mouse model, both mutants were cleared at day 21 post-infection, indicating reduced virulence in mice. After challenging with wild-type B. canis, the amounts of CFU recovered at day 15 were significantly lower in the group previously vaccinated with the virB10 mutant. Levels of IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, and IgM, the induction of the cytokines IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, and the production of IFN-γ were measured in lymphocyte cultures. All strains elicited similar levels of different antibody isotype profiles, and no significant differences were detected (P < 0.05). The wild-type strain induced a rapid and strong INF-γ response at 24 h, while both mutants induced mild INF-γ responses at 24 h, which remained constant over the course of sampling. Our results suggest that the virB mutants elicit a protective immunity and may be considered as candidates for studies to be conducted in dogs against canine brucellosis.

Alasbimn Journal , 2003,
The aim of the present study was to determine the optimum activity of the Cuban MDP labeled with Tc-99m, for establishing a compromise relation between image quality and patient radiological protection in Nuclear Medicine studies. The used statistical technique was the discriminant analysis to arrive at the optimization criterion. Three samples of 18 patients each were selected. Each sample was undergone to a different acquisition protocol. Each sample was divided into three groups of 6 patients each. The administered activities were: 293 MBq, 430 MBq or 598 MBq. Images of hands and femurs were graded for each study. The ratios Signal /Background and Signal/ Noise were processed. The value of 430 MBq was enough to obtain good image quality using a protocol of 10 minutes of acquisition for the used technical conditions.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2012.310173
Abstract: This study was designed to examine relationships between climate and vegetation of the Pacific rim of North America, from the Mediterranean deserts of California to Alaska’s boreal taiga. Relations were inferred from temperature and rainfall data recorded at 457 weather stations and by sampling the vegetation around these stations. Climate data were used to construct climatograms, calculate forty one variables and detect main latitudinal and longitudinal gradients. In order to identify the best functions able to relate our variables, polynomial and non-polynomial regressions were performed. The k-means algorithm was the clustering method used to validate the variables that could best support our bioclimatic classification. The variable that best fitted our classification was finally used to prepare a discriminatory key for bioclimates. Across this extensive area three macrobioclimates were identified, Mediterranean, Temperate and Bo- real, within which we were able to distinguish nine bioclimates. Finally, we relate the different types of potential natural vegetation to each of these bioclimates and describe their floristic composition and physiognomy.

Alasbimn Journal , 2003,
Abstract: A method, which consists in constructing a discriminant function of the image quality is proposed. The dependent parameter is referred image quality by expert criterion. The function is able to select which of the measured parameters determine the referred image quality. The minimum activity to permit good image quality can be proposed as optimum among a group of tested activities. The method was tested in 36 patients underwent to DMSA-99mTc scintigraphy. They were divided into 3 groups of 12 patients each. Each group was monitored by a different acquisition protocol and for two activities (72 MBq and 133 MBq). The measured parameters were: the age, sex and weight of the patients, the labeling yield (LY), the acquisition time and some Signal-to-Background ratios. The constructed function could classify 91.7% of the cases correctly. The ratios Right Kidney/Bladder, Left Kidney/Bladder, LY and Right Kidney/Liver were the determinant parameters. 72 MBq-700 kcounts was selected as the optimal combination to obtain good image quality.
