A realidade do consumo de drogas nas popula??es escolares
Pinheiro,Adriana; Pican?o,Paula; Barbeito,José;
Revista Portuguesa de Clínica Geral , 2011,
Abstract: objectives: to characterize illegal drug use among azorean high school students and to assess their knowledge of this subject. type of study: cross-sectional. setting: high schools in the autonomous region of the azores. population: high school students in the ninth grade methods: a survey was conducted in a convenience sample of ninth grade students in five high schools in the region. results: the study included 602 teenagers, of who 307 were females, with an average age of 15.2 (14-18) years. all respondents said they had already heard of drugs (76.4% at school and 47% at home), 62.3% have seen friends consume drugs, 38.0% had been offered drugs and 25.6% had tried drugs (55.8% of the boys and 44.2% of the girls). the average age of first use was 14.4 years and the most commonly drug used was cannabis. the main place of consumption was in bar or nightclub but 41% had seen drug use at school and 46.8% of users have done on this at school. almost 43% of students had experienced drug use once or twice, 44.2% used on weekends, 9.7% used two to three times a week and 3.2% used drugs every day. the main reasons for drug use were curiosity and the offer of a friend. conclusions: this study suggests that the prevalence of drug use among azorean teenagers is high, more than any other region of the country, and higher than the european average. we question the adequacy of information on drug use obtained by the students, considering that this occurs mainly in school. drug use occurred most often in bars and nightclubs, suggesting possibilities for intervention in these areas. these results suggest the need for adequate information and training, raising awareness of young people to the harmful effects of drug abuse, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Thymic atrophy in cattle poisoned with Solanum glaucophyllum
Fontana, Paula A.;Zanuzzi, Carolina N.;Barbeito, Claudio G.;Gimeno, Eduardo J.;Portiansky, Enrique L.;
Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-736X2009000300014
Abstract: solanum glaucophyllum (sg) [= s. malacoxylon] is a calcinogenic plant inducing "enzootic calcinosis" in cattle. the 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin d3, its main toxic principle, regulates bone and calcium metabolism and also exerts immunomodulatory effects. thymocyte precursors from bone marrow-derived progenitor cells differentiate into mature t-cells. differentiation of most t lymphocytes is characterized not only by the variable expression of cd4/cd8 receptor molecules and increased surface density of the t cell antigen receptor, but also by changes in the glycosylation pattern of cell surface glycolipids or glycoproteins. thymocytes exert a feedback influence on thymic non-lymphoid cells. sg-induced modifications on cattle thymus t-lymphocytes and on non-lymphoid cells were analysed. heifers were divided into 5 groups (control, intoxicated with sg during 15, 30 or 60 days, and probably recovered group). histochemical, immunohistochemical, lectinhistochemical and morphometric techniques were used to characterize different cell populations of the experimental heifers. sg-poisoned heifers showed a progressive cortical atrophy that was characterized using the peanut agglutinin (pna) lectin that recognizes immature thymocytes. these animals also increased the amount of non-lymphoid cells per unit area detected with the picrosirius technique, wga and dba lectins, and pancytokeratin and s-100 antibodies. the thymus atrophy found in intoxicated animals resembled that of the physiological aging process. a reversal effect on these changes was observed after suppression of the intoxication. these findings suggest that sg-intoxication induces either directly, through the 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin d3 itself, or indirectly through the hypercalcemia, the observed alteration of the thymus.
Sobre las casas Kaufmann. Dos dibujos y fotografía
José Barbeito
Cuadernos de Proyectos Arquitectónicos , 2011,
Abstract: This article explores the Kaufmann family houses, their architects and the American world of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. . The first, designed by Benno Janssen, is not widely known but it is fantastic because it is capable of creating a landscape where it does not exist. I love it. There, in its living room, is where Wright received the commission to build Fallingwater house. And finally, I would like to dedicate a few comments to the house built by Neutra, in order to balance the article. Wright could be the guiding thread. I have always thought that Fallingwater house has some aspects that are a bit forced and therefore, paradoxically, unnatural. I also believe that with this building Wright distances himself from the interests of European Architecture, and is focused on more realistic problems, such as those of collective housing.
Planning for the succession process among Galician family businesses. Brief comparison with Portuguese family businesses
Susana Barbeito Roibal,Gerardo Domínguez Feijoó
Economic Analysis Working Papers , 2006,
Abstract: A research project on Galician family owned businesses, financed by the University of A Coru a from 2004 to 2005, analyzed results from 57 of these companies that earned a profit of more than 5 million euro in 2003. One of the aspects examined in this project, which is the aim of this article, shows the importance that Galician family business owners pay to the planning for the succession process. Literature on family owned businesses emphasizes the importance of planning in successful occurrences. The obtained results increasingly show changes in the significance that the Galician family business owners give to our focus of study, almost reaching the level of importance that literature has given to the succession process in the last decade.

Abstract: outcome indicators are an essential part of the hospital care quality assessment. they are also attractive elements that allow estimating the benefits that hospital brings to the community, but they are not useful in spatial and time comparisons if they are not adjusted to the characteristics of those patients included in the indicator calculations. the first notion of this requirement dated back to the 19th century, and at the middle of the 20th century, the risk-adjustment had already been included in the comparison of hospital performances in the developed countries. however, risk-adjusted spatial and time comparisons of outcomes inside the hospital or between hospitals or hospital services are not made in cuba yet. the present paper attempted to submit this topic to the interested people and to pave the way for debate around the best form of introducing the risk-adjustment since it is essential for hospital performance assessments.
