Espina Prieto, Mayra Paula;
Caderno CRH , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-49792007000200003
Abstract: the text presents a synthesis of the international debate on the pertinence of a state with a strong intervention profile centralized on universal social policies or the need of flowing to decentralizing formulas, aimed at the selective protection of the underprivileged. it argues for a re-hierarchization of the "social issue" through a relational model of social management. in this context, it evaluates the gains and limitations of the social policies of socialist transition, in cuba, as well as the effects of the crisis and reform of the nineties on the cuban society, in the increment of the inequality and of the poverty, generating a reestratification and a larger social complexity. it concludes that such scenario demands changes in public intervention, aimed at: the economical sustainability of the social policy; the substitution of the egalitarian conception for a perspective that recognizes the diversity of needs, according to different groups and individuals; the modification of the strategic priorities of the social expense in favor of the satisfactions in the household-individual-family sphere; the emphasis in the endogenous local development and in the local actors in decision making; and the enlargement of the contents and limits of the participation in the construction of the social agenda, prioritizing co-management elements, strategic formulation and popular control of the process and of its results.
ESPINA PRIETO,Mayra Paula;
Utopìa y Praxis Latinoamericana , 2007,
Abstract: taking advantage of the inspiration that jesús iba?ez offers, fourteen years from his death -with his critical sociology of urban everyday-life, his radical reflexivism, responsible for the irreversible ?return? of the subject, and his proposals in the field of the methodology of `socioanalysis′- to those initiating themselves in the complexity approach, those that labor in the area of social thought, those interested in epistemological debates and in an integrative perspective about the subject-object relation, this `virtual interview′ (really the precipitate of multiple conversations with him in havana and madrid during the years 1990-1992) goes into his visions about topics such as autopoiesis and its specific significance in social systems; reflexivity in its counterpoint with the objectivist assumption; his insistence on margins as privileged and unavoidable observation points; and social change and revolution in posmodernity times.
Mayra Paula Espina Prieto
Utopia y Praxis Latinoamericana , 2007,

Abstract:
Complejidad, transdisciplina y metodología de la investigación social1
ESPINA PRIETO2,Mayra Paula;
Utopìa y Praxis Latinoamericana , 2007,
Abstract: the text deals with the links between the scientific ideal and the methodological conceptions in research. it argues how the ideal of simplification corresponds with disciplinary methodologies that fix and control reality to keep it in a positive state, identified from an external power; on the contrary, approaches oriented towards an understanding of complexity correspond with transdisciplinary methodologies, inquire and act about reality from multicriteriality and in an effort to move it towards possible states thorugh self-organized change. it is a counterpoint between social research as an external control device or as an in ternal change agent.
Guerrero-Alonso,Paula; Prieto-Salceda,Dolores; Llorca,Javier;
Gaceta Sanitaria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0213-91112007000400011
Abstract: objectives: to determine whether weather conditions explain the north-south gradient in multiple sclerosis (ms) mortality described in spain. methods: the age-adjusted ms mortality rate by spanish provinces from 1975 to 1998 was correlated with several climatic variables. results: ms mortality was negatively correlated with minimum, average and maximum temperatures, the mean number of hours of sunshine, and the mean number of sunny days. a positive correlation was found with the average amount of rain. most correlations disappeared after adjusting by latitude. however, ms mortality was associated with latitude after adjusting by climatic factors. conclusions: the north-south gradient in ms mortality in spain cannot be fully explained by weather differences. therefore, other hypotheses are required to explain this association.

International Journal of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery (IJOHNS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijohns.2014.36057
Abstract: Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare neoplasm that can occur in any part of the body, but mostly they are located intraorally. Its histogenetic origin remains controversial, but it probably arises from Schwann cells and is generally benign. The tumor is typically asymptomatic and appears as a nodule, with a relatively high predilection for the tongue. This article reports a case of a 72-year-old woman treated at the Center of Oral Diagnosis of the Fundação Hermínio Ometto Dental School. The patient presented with an asymptomatic nodule in the dorsal surface of the tongue for approximately 4 months. The patient was submitted to an excisional biopsy and histopatological examination revealed polyhedral cells with granular aspect. The immunohistochemical staining for S-100 presented strong reactivity, confirming the diagnosis of GCT. Finally, we made a concise discussion about the pathogenesis and fundamental clinico-pathological aspects of GCT making the differential diagnosis.
