Abstract: the isolation of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants, based on traditional use or ethnomedical data, is a highly promising potential approach for identifying new and effective antimalarial drug candidates. the purpose of this review was to create a compilation of the phytochemical studies on medicinal plants used to treat malaria in traditional medicine from the community of portuguese-speaking countries (cpsc): angola, brazil, cape verde, guinea-bissau, mozambique and s?o tomé and príncipe. in addition, this review aimed to show that there are several medicinal plants popularly used in these countries for which few scientific studies are available. the primary approach compared the antimalarial activity of native species used in each country with its extracts, fractions and isolated substances. in this context, data shown here could be a tool to help researchers from these regions establish a scientific and technical network on the subject for the cpsc where malaria is a public health problem.
Machado, Paula Sandrine;
Cadernos Pagu , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332005000100012
Abstract: this paper analyzes body representations and social practices related to intersex children and teenagers by contrasting the viewpoints of medical doctors and the patients' relatives. it is based upon two analytical categories: the gendered view of anatomy and the visibility/invisibility of sex. the main arguments suggested here are that sex is as culturally-built as gender, and that the boundaries between the natural and not-natural are easily blurred when it comes to defining what fits and what does not fit social norms.
Machado, Paula Sandrine;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092008000300008
Abstract: the aim of this article is to analyze the composition and meaning of the "chicago consensus," published in two medical journals in august 2006. the "consensus" recommends the use of the nomenclature "disorders of sex development" (dsd) instead of the former classification of the "intersexual states." also, it suggests conducts related to diagnostic and intervention in these situations. the analysis points to the appearance of new terminologies, in which a medical specialty (genetics) is emphasized, and to the effort towards a classification progressively based on more "technical" terms and with very complex and specific codes. the "consensus" reaffirms, thus, the fundamental role played by genetics and molecular biology in the discussion and production of knowledge inside the biologic and medical field of the "sexual determination and differentiation," as well as in research and interventions related to intersexuality. in this context, the emergence of the "sexcode" - a sex "revealed" in the microscopic level of the body - is highlighted.
"Quimeras" da ciência: a perspectiva de profissionais da saúde em casos de intersexo
Machado, Paula Sandrine;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092005000300005
Abstract: the article aims at make problematic the theme of sexual definition when there is a medical "diagnosis" of "ambiguous genitalia." the analysis is centered on performances and social practices taken by health professionals in the moment of the decisions concerning "genitalia correction" in intersexual children, which goes from the moment a certain alteration is perceived, the moment it is diagnosed as intersexual, until it is decided to intervene aiming at adapting the body to one or another sex. it goes from two analytical axes: notion of knowledge field and the perspective of gender. it is shown that the decisions are elapsed by different views on specific knowledge areas amid the much ampler field of medicine and psychology. it is also argued that such decisions, supposedly neutral, are informed by cultural factors, what points at new apprehensions on dichotomies of nature/culture and sex/gender.

Abstract: introduction: crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease from gastrointestinal tract. the increase in incidence and heterogeneity of this pathology, with different presentations and prognostics leads to a constant concern in developing and improving its classification and treatment. objectives: to establish recommendations (based on level of evidence and recommendation grades) to 5 questions considered as the clinical challenges of the therapeutic approach in crohn’s disease. methods: the methodology adopted by the working group dc2 (desafios clínicos na doen?a de crohn) was based on the selection of 5 questions, by voting, and establishing recommendations to each question proposed to each subgroup. discussion and approval of reflexions and final recommendations was carried out in a consensus meeting. conclusion: it has been possible to base conclusions about the questions under study on evidence, being recommended: 1) having crohn’s disease under 40 years old, structuring phenotype disease and anal disease are predictive factors of bad prognostic; 2) it is possible to consider suspension of biologics in patients with endoscopic remission and normal biomarkers; 3) patients with biochemical markers of disease activity (crp and calprotectina) have more probability of relapse; 4) in failure of biologics it is essential to assure that treatment with the first drug was optimized: with infliximab it’s demonstrated that either reduction of the administration range or increasing the dose allows to recover the response in the majority of patients; as for adalimumab, patients should change from bimonthly to weekly administrations; 5) in case of crohn’s disease with intestinal surgery, use of therapeutic to reduce postoperative recurrence is indicated, particularly immunosupressors and biologics
Cylindrospermopsin in Water Supply Reservoirs in Brazil Determined by Immunochemical and Molecular Methods  [PDF]

Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2011.36044
Abstract: It is reported for the first time in Brazil and South America the presence of cylindrospermopsin (CYN) in water supply reservoirs. CYN is a powerful hepatotoxic alkaloid implicated in outbreaks of human sicknesses. We detected CYN in different sources of water in Northeastern Brazil using molecular and immunological techniques. The highest concentrations of toxin occurred in the Jucazinho reservoir with the phytoplankton containing the potentially CYN-producing C. raciborskii and Sphaerospermopsis aphanizomenoides (previously known as Aphanizomenon aphanizomenoides). The polyketide synthase (PKS) and peptide synthetase (PS), which are directly related to the ability to produce CYN, were found in all the analyzed samples. The result of the present study emphasizes the need to improve monitoring of CYN in water bodies used for drinking and recreation, in order to avoid exposure of human populations to this toxin.
Moura,Octávio; Matos,Paula Mena;
Psicologia , 2008,
Abstract: this study intends to identify variations in quality of adolescents? attachment to parents as a function of family structure (intact and divorced families) and interparental conflict. furthermore, differences according to adolescent?s and parent?s gender were also analysed. the sample consists of 310 adolescents, 14 to 18 aged from both genders. participants responded to the father/mother attachment questionnaire (matos & costa, 2001, revised version) and the children?s perception of interparental conflict scale (grych, seid & fincham, 1992). both instruments present adequate psychometrics qualities, tested by confirmatory factor analyses and internal reliability. results indicated that divorce affects more the quality of attachment to father, while interparental conflict is the variable that predicted more the quality of attachment to parents, affecting the quality of emotional bond to both parents independently of family structure.
Memória de reconhecimento social em ratos
Moura, Paula J.;Xavier, Gilberto F.;
Psicologia USP , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-65642010000200008
Abstract: the intruder-resident paradigm has been extensively employed in studies of social recognition memory in rodents. typically, adult rats (residents) are exposed to two 5-min encounters with the same juvenile intruder or with two different juveniles; the interval between the encounters is 30 min. the amount of social behaviors exhibited by the resident rats toward the same intruder juvenile in the second encounter is substantially smaller when compared to both that seen in the first encounter and that seen toward a different juvenile; these results characterize social recognition memory. in this study we discuss recent findings related to behaviors usually included as social and non-social, the influence of the temporal phase on social behavior, the interference of laboratory routines on social recognition memory, sensory modalities usually employed by rodents for processing relevant information in the social memory and additional alternatives to study sociability in these animals.
