Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-20612010000500016
Abstract: sixteen common bean cultivars were compared concerning the physicochemical characteristics of their raw seeds in the course of two consecutive harvests, as well as the effect of storage conditions on starch and dietary fiber content of cooked beans. using cluster analysis it was possible to identify groups of cultivars with different nutritional features. bean cultivars were categorized into four different groups according either to their macronutrient content (crude protein-prot, total dietary fiber-tdf, insoluble dietary fiber-idf, soluble dietary fiber-sdf, digestible starch-ds, and resistant starch-rs) or to their micronutrient levels (fe, zn, mn, cu, ca, mg, and p). guateian 6662 and rio tibagi appeared to be the most suitable cultivars to prevent nutritional deficiencies, because they had high prot, ds, fe, and zn content. the high total dietary fiber and rs content of iraí, minuano, and tps bonito cultivars, and specially the high soluble fiber content of guateian 6662 and rio tibagi cultivars suggests that they could have a beneficial role in controlling blood lipid and glucose levels. cooked beans had a decrease in ds and an increase in rs content after storage (4 °c or -20 °c), but these changes were more prominent in beans that had low rs content before cooking than in those of high rs content. tdf, idf, and sdf did not change after storage.

Abstract: we have previously reported that prothrombin fragment 1+2 levels were not associated to the presence or severity of coronary artery disease (cad) and do not provide further information on subjects with cad diagnosed by angiography. thus, in the present study another marker of hypercoagulability was evaluated in the same subjects. this study aimed at determining d-dimer plasma levels in a group of subjects undergoing coronary angiography to establish a likely relation between this parameter and the severity of cad. d-dimer plasma levels were determined in 17 subjects with no coronary atheromatosis (controls), 12 subjects with mild/moderate atheromatosis and 28 subjects with severe atheromatosis. no significant differences were observed among the three groups. data analysis enables an inference on a tendency towards an increase in fibrinolytic activity in patients with atheromatosis, reflected by the increase in d-dimer concentrations in the severe atheromatosis group in subjects with cad diagnosed by coronary angiography.

Abstract: the integrated crop-livestock (ilp) is an alternative recovery and renewal of degraded pastures; however, it is important to show its economic viability. the objective of this research was to analyse the yields and economic outcomes of modalities of growing corn with fodder of the genera brachiaria and panicum in the ilp under no-tillage. the experiment was conducted in the agricultural year 2009/2010 in selvíria - ms, brazil, in a distroferric red latosol (oxisol). the experimental design was a randomized complete block with four repetitions and the treatments consisted of eight methods of cultivation of maize intercropped with panicum maximum jacq cv. tanzania, panicum maximum jacq cv. momba?a, brachiaria brizantha (hochst.) stapf cv. mg-5, or brachiaria ruziziensis germain & evrard, sown simultaneously or at side dressing nitrogen fertilization, besides single grown corn. the operating cost analysis was based on prices of inputs and operations, and gross revenue in the average selling price of corn in the state of s?o paulo, brazil. the cropping systems didn't reduce the grain yield for maize comparatively to single grown, and the consotium more recommended is corn with b. ruziziensis, especially in simultaneously sowing, because besides being one of the most productive, the price of this seed is the most affordable, obtaining larger profitability index than the other treatments. in general, the simultaneous crops were the most productive, having a higher gross income, total operating cost (due to herbicide application sanson), lower operating profit (excluding mbs) and higher profitability index.

Abstract: Background Using human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) as an in vitro model for how African trypanosomes cross the human blood-brain barrier (BBB) we recently reported that the parasites cross the BBB by generating calcium activation signals in HBMECs through the activity of parasite cysteine proteases, particularly cathepsin L (brucipain). In the current study, we examined the possible role of a class of protease stimulated HBMEC G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) known as protease activated receptors (PARs) that might be implicated in calcium signaling by African trypanosomes. Methodology/Principal Findings Using RNA interference (RNAi) we found that in vitro PAR-2 gene (F2RL1) expression in HBMEC monolayers could be reduced by over 95%. We also found that the ability of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense to cross F2RL1-silenced HBMEC monolayers was reduced (39%–49%) and that HBMECs silenced for F2RL1 maintained control levels of barrier function in the presence of the parasite. Consistent with the role of PAR-2, we found that HBMEC barrier function was also maintained after blockade of Gαq with Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT). PAR-2 signaling has been shown in other systems to have neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective roles and our data implicate a role for proteases (i.e. brucipain) and PAR-2 in African trypanosome/HBMEC interactions. Using gene-profiling methods to interrogate candidate HBMEC pathways specifically triggered by brucipain, several pathways that potentially link some pathophysiologic processes associated with CNS HAT were identified. Conclusions/Significance Together, the data support a role, in part, for GPCRs as molecular targets for parasite proteases that lead to the activation of Gαq-mediated calcium signaling. The consequence of these events is predicted to be increased permeability of the BBB to parasite transmigration and the initiation of neuroinflammation, events precursory to CNS disease.

Abstract: objective: to determine serum levels of lipoprotein(a) and lipid profile of a group of individuals submitted to coronary angiography, with the aim of establishing the possible correlation between these parameters and the severity of coronary artery disease. methods: serum levels of total cholesterol, hdlc, ldlc, triglycerides, lipoprotein(a), apolipoproteins a-i and b were measured in blood samples of 17 subjects with absence of atheromatosis in the coronary arteries (control), 12 subjects presenting mild/moderate atheromatosis and 28 subjects presenting severe atheromatosis. results: no significant statistical differences were found between the means of the three groups for the parameters assessed, except for lipoprotein(a) serum levels which presented significant differences between the means of the control, mild/moderate atheromatosis and severe atheromatosis groups (p<0.001). conclusion: the means obtained in the three groups for lp(a) indicate a progressive increase in the serum levels of this parameter according to the severity of coronary atheromatosis. these findings suggest the need of additional studies in order to obtain enough evidence to support the introduction of routine assessment of lp(a) levels in clinical laboratories in the monitoring of patients at risk for coronary artery disease (cad).

Abstract: spasticity often coexists with stroke due to an upper motor neuron lesion, which impacts the patient's quality of life. therefore, the control of muscle tone through physical therapy such as cryotherapy and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (nmes) is extremely important. several studies have demonstrated their advantageous physiological effects. however, these studies have not provided sufficient scientific proof for the treatment of upper limb spasticity and the duration of the physiological effects after the therapy. therefore, this work helps to establish an application protocol for cryotherapy and nmes in individuals with spastic hemiparesis. the resistance to movement of the elbow flexor and extensor muscles before and after application of cryotherapy and nmes was used to determine the effect of the therapies. the study included 15 stroke patients that required physical therapy for spastic hemiparesis. they included both sexes, mean age of 56 ± 16. an evaluation was performed before and after therapy, as well as 10, 20, and 30 minutes following the application, by means of surface electromyography (emg). the resistance to movement was measured with an isokinetic dynamometer in the passive mode at an angular velocity of 30 and 150 o/s. although not statistically significant (p < 0.05), the results showed a reduced resistance to passive movement of the elbow flexors and extensors after cryotherapy and nmes, allowing us to conclude that physical therapy effectively reduces the resistance to passive movement in spastic hemiparetic patients, however, they have different effects with respect to time.

Abstract: there is a growing yield in the literature on the main determinants of the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises. one important contribution in this way is the assumption that the clustering of firms can bring them strong benefits, also in terms of productive improvement. based on these assumptions, this paper aims to exam the main effects of the clustering firms on the manufacturing process upgrading of small firms, by the analysis of the dissemination of manufacturing practices and tools in local systems. to this end, a survey with 42 small footwear producers was carried out at the local system of franca, brazil. the study investigated the existence of manufacturing process improvement among these firms and the main sources of information for the dissemination of these tools. the main results show that the clustering firms can stimulate the adoption of new manufacturing management practices, through both deliberate channels of dissemination of new knowledge among firms and the spontaneous ways of information exchange, which are usual in these local production systems. in addition, it was possible to notice that the level of appropriability of these benefits depends on the existence of previous knowledge inside firms, that is, their absorption capacity.
