Interconsulta Neurológica en la Unidad de Tratamiento Intensivo
Mellado,Patricio;
Revista chilena de neuro-psiquiatría , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-92272004000100008
Abstract: the paper "neurological consultations in the medical intensive care unit" by rasvi ss, bone i. published in j neurol neurosurg psychiatry 2003; 74 (suppl iii): iii16-iii23 shows the epidemiological importance of neurological consultations in the intensive care unit (icu). it then analyses the clinical and technological difficulties of evaluating these patients, and defines such terms used in the icu as sepsis, septic shock, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ards) and multiple organ failure. it describes the neurological testing that should be done in the icu and, finally, reviews the various situations in which neurologists are needed in intensive care
Invitación al tema de las unidades de Neurointensivo
Mellado,Patricio;
Revista chilena de neuro-psiquiatría , 2003, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-92272003000400006
Abstract: the paper "admission to neurological intensive care: who, when, and why?" by howard rs, kullmann dm, hirsch np published in j neurol neurosurg psychiatry. 2003; 74 (suppl iii): iii2-iii9, lists and briefly comments on the pathologies treated in a neurointensive care unit. two interesting concepts discussed in the paper are: 1. exhaustive care given by the nursing staff and early kinesiological treatment are key to achieving positive results among patients hospitalized in any type of intensive care unit; and 2. a patient suffering from a serious neurological illness should be hospitalized in neurointensive care rather than in a general critical care unit since specialized care units can better anticipate a patient?s needs due to the staff?s greater knowledge of the nature of neurological illnesses and a keener ability to recognize complications early on

Encefalitis límbica por anticuerpos anticanales de potasio dependientes de voltaje: Caso clínico
Soler,Bernardita; Godoy,Jaime; Mellado,Patricio;
Revista médica de Chile , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0034-98872009000500012
Abstract: limbic encephalitis (le) can be associated to cancer, viral infection or be idiopathic. one form is associated to voltage dependent potassium channel (vkc) antibodies. the clinical presentation includes impairment of consciousness, amnesia and temporal lobe seizures; typical abnormalities are also found in brain magnetic resonance. we report a 68 year-old male who had le associated to vkc antibodies. the patient was treated with steroids with a partial response. at the moment of the report he is asymptomatic and continues with prednisone treatment .
Tratamiento del estado epiléptico refractario con topiramato oral
Soler,Bernardita; Godoy,Jaime; Mellado,Patricio;
Revista médica de Chile , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0034-98872009000700012
Abstract: refractory status epilepticus is a catastrophic illness of the central nervous system, with a mortality rate that reaches 50%. we report three patients admitted with refractory status epilepticus: a 24 year-old male that discontinued antiepileptic medications, a 46 year-old male with a focal epilepsy secondary to an encephalitis that discontinued medications due to gastrointestinal problems and a 59 year-old male with an ischemic encephalopathy ah were treated with topiramate, delivered through a nasogastric tube with a good response.

Abstract: we report a case of thoracic spinal arteriovenous fistula. clinical features, diagnostic methods and treatment options are reviewed. we conclude that the goal of surgery is vein occlusion. the surgery seems to have better results in the long-term, achieving either stabilization or improvement of neurological symptoms
MEJORAMIENTO DE TRIGOS HARINEROS (Triticum aestivum L.) EN LA ZONA CENTRO SUR DE CHILE. IV. CARACTERIZACIóN DE CULTIVARES DE TRIGOS BASADO EN PERFILES ELECTROFORéTICOS DE GLUTENINAS Y GLIADINAS
Hinrichsen R.,Patricio; Castro P.,M. Herminia; Mellado Z.,Mario;
Agricultura Técnica , 2002, DOI: 10.4067/S0365-28072002000100006
Abstract: twenty-two wheat cultivars released between 1968 and 1996 by the quilamapu research center of the chilean agriculture research institute, were analyzed for their seed storage protein profiles, including the high molecular weight glutenins (hmwg) and the acidic gliadins. hmwg showed a good reproducibility compared to previous determinations, and a high diversity, with 14 different protein bands in 12 different allelic combinations, corresponding to the loci glua1, glub1 and glud1. a correlation between hmwg alleles related to quality and sedimentation values was observed, with the exception of some cultivars. the electrophoretic screening of the 22 cultivars identified the a , b , d and w gliadin types. the similarity among some cultivars, in terms of sharing hmwg or gliadin profiles, did not have any correlation with their having the same progenitors or similar pedigrees. the combination of hmwg and gliadin banding patterns represents a plausible method to differentiate the majority of the cultivars included in this study.
