Analysis of Escherichia coli isolated from bovine mastitic milk

Abstract: mastitis has been recognized for some time as the most costly disease in dairy herds. from february to november 2004, 670 samples of bovine mastitic milk from which 231 escherichia coli strains were isolated, were collected from two brazilian states. the strains were screened for the presence of shiga toxin-producing (stx 1 and stx 2) and intimin (eae) genes. twenty (8.6%) strains were detected by pcr to harbor the shiga toxin genes (8 the stx 1 gene, 12 the stx 2 gene and none both of them). two (0.8%) of the escherichia coli strains studied were eae positive non shiga toxin-producing. the strains were also examined for resistance to 12 antimicrobial agents. the predominantly observed resistance was to tetracycline (92.2%), streptomycin (90.4%), nalidixic acid (88.3%), amikacin (86.5%) and cephalothin (84.8%). multidrug resistance was found among 152 isolates (65.8%).

Abstract: asymmetric reproductive isolation between lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis and lutzomyia longipalpis (species c2), neotropical vectors of visceral leishmaniasis (diptera: pshychodidae). lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis and lutzomyia longipalpis (species c2, l. sp n.) are two endemic species of phlebotominae sand fly vectors from venezuela. the two insects are sympatric and monophyletic but have deeply diverging, morphological differences. they belong to the l. longipalpis complex. a study of their reproductive isolation is necessary to understand the process of speciation and maintenance of the two sister species as two discrete taxonomic and biological entities. cross-mating tests were conducted (homo and hetero-specific) and monitored under two criteria: biological (presence of copulation and offspring) and genetic (using two isozymic markers diagnostic for the l. longipalpis complex; enzyme diagnosis ak and hk). results indicate reproductive isolation, with an asymmetrical genetic exchange in a direction of hybridization between the two species under experimental conditions, and production of a low number of heterozygotes. these findings support the existence of negative selection on hybrids, and explain the absence of hybrids under natural conditions, in the sympatric locality. rev. biol. trop. 57 (1-2): 23-31. epub 2009 june 30.

Abstract: Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis y Lutzomyia longipalpis (especie C2, L. n. sp) son dos especies de flebotominos vectores endémicos de Venezuela, simpátricas, monofiléticas, con profundas divergencias, morfológicamente diferentes y pertenecientes al complejo de especies L. longipalpis. El estudio de su aislamiento reproductivo es clave para entender el proceso de especiación y el mantenimiento de estas dos especies hermanas como entidades taxonómicas y biológicas discretas. Por tal motivo, se realizaron ensayos de entrecruzamiento homo y heteroespecíficos, los cuales fueron monitoreados por dos criterios: biológico (presencia de cópula y progenie) y genético (utilizando dos marcadores isoenzimáticos diagnósticos para el complejo L. longipalpis, las enzimas AK y HK). Los resultados indican aislamiento reproductivo, con un intercambio genético asimétrico hacia la hibridización en condiciones experimentales, y producción de un bajo número de heterocigotos, lo que apoya la existencia de selección negativa sobre los híbridos y explica su ausencia en condiciones naturales en la localidad simpátrica. Síndrome de Waardenburg tipo I: relato de caso

Abstract: waardenburg syndrome (ws) type i is a non-progressive auditory-pigmentary disorder comprising congenital sensorineural hearing loss and pigmentary disturbances of the iris, hair, and skin, along with dystopia canthorum (lateral displacement of the inner canthi). affected individuals may have higher risk of: neural tube defects, cleft lip and palate, limb abnormalities, and hirschsprung disease. the diagnosis is clinical and should be considered if the individual has two major or one major plus two minor criteria. pax3 is the only known gene associated to the syndrome. nevertheless, its use is mostly for genetic counseling. regarding different diagnosis, we may list: other causes of non-progressive auditory-pigmentary disorder comprising congenital sensorineural hearing loss, other types of waardenburg syndrome, piebaldism, albinism, vitiligo and teitz syndrome. this paper presents a case of an eleven year old boy with deafness and ophthalmologic alterations, based on his files and exams. it reinforced the importance of the ophthalmologist contributing for the diagnosis of this rare systemic disease, as it includes some ophthalmologic alterations. we remind that the early diagnosis allows adequate stimulation for the hearing loss, as well as preventive measures in case of pregnant women affected by genetic counseling.
Ecological niche models and patterns of richness and endemism of the southern Andean genus Eurymetopum (Coleoptera, Cleridae)

Abstract: eurymetopum is an andean clerid genus with 22 species. we modeled the ecological niches of 19 species with maxent and used them as potential distributional maps to identify patterns of richness and endemicity. all modeled species maps were overlapped in a single map in order to determine richness. we performed an optimality analysis with ndm/vndm in a grid of 1o latitude-longitude in order to identify endemism. we found a highly rich area, located between 32o and 41o south latitude, where the richest pixels have 16 species. one area of endemism was identified, located in the maule and valdivian forest biogeographic provinces, which extends also to the santiago province of the central chilean subregion, and contains four endemic species (e. parallelum, e. prasinum, e. proteus, and e. viride), as well as 16 non-endemic species. the sympatry of these phylogenetically unrelated species might indicate ancient vicariance processes, followed by episodes of dispersal. based on our results, we suggest a close relationship between these provinces, with the maule representing a complex area.

Abstract: an anatomical study about the anterior knee of the intracavernous carotid artery is presented. twenty cavernous sinuses (cs) were dissected in cadavers using microsurgical techniques. a fibrous ring around the internal carotid artery (ica) at the cs roof was found in all specimens. this fibrous attachment could be dissected from the surrounding dura and a loose connective tissue could be demonstrated around the ica. this anatomical finding makes possible the microsurgical approach to vascular lesions of this portion of the ica, without opening the cavernous sinus.

Abstract: in the modern society, cancer remains an important cause of death. cancer development is a very complex process that involves alterations in genes regulating cellular growth. among these alterations or variations, are included point mutations, genetic susceptibility by single nucleotide polymorphisms or "snp" and alteration or loss in tumor suppressor genes functions. the tumor suppressor tp53 is one of the most important and studied genes on cancer genetics. therefore, it has been demonstrated that tp53 present mutations in more than 50% of all types of human cancer and encodes a multifunctional protein whose absence contributes to genomic instability, the accumulation of mutations and increased tumor development. the identification of such alterations in cancerous cells at level of single nucleotide is very important, because its implication in the loss or alteration in the function of this gene, its clinical relevance and finally, its association with response to therapy and prognosis. due to the large interesting issue, in this work we are focused only in two of the most common genetic variations present in this gene: the point mutations and snp remarking some outstanding molecular characteristics needed for design its analysis.

Abstract: effectiveness of 44 federal protected areas (pa) for preventing land use and land cover changes (lulc) in mexico is examined, comparing results and methodological approaches used in previous studies. we quantified the percentage of transformed area (ts) in 2002 and its rate of change between 1993 and 2002. we compared observed ts rate of change in pa, adjacent areas, and their ecoregions of location. an effectiveness index was build to produce a characterization of lulc processes developed for each pa. in 2002, 77% pa showed less than 20% covered by ts; nearly 30% of pa showed a reduction of ts. additionally, in 30% of pa, ts increase exceeded the mean rate for all pa. more than 70% of pa showed lower lulc rates than their surrounding areas, and in 80% of pa, these rates were lower than those observed in their corresponding ecoregions. overall, pa were effective to prevent lulc processes as previously suggested. however, trends derived from this type of analyses depend on methodological specifications. effectiveness indexes should be complemented with a detailed characterization of lulc processes and their interpretation should correspond to the specific methodological approach used.
FORMULACIóN DE UNA BEBIDA LáCTEA CON SABOR A AREQUIPE ENRIQUECIDA CON HIERRO Y áCIDO FóLICO, DIRIGIDA A MUJERES GESTANTES

Abstract: background. colombia is one of the world's countries having a moderate prevalence of anaemic expectant women (20%-40%); it has been shown that mothers' serum folate and iron levels are relevant biochemical factors for babies' formation. such statements have justified formulating an iron- and folic acid-enriched food product which has been specifically designed for expectant mothers and which contributes towards improving their nutritional conditions. objective. developing an organoleptically acceptable, caramel (arequipe)-flavoured, sweetened iron- and folic acid-enriched milk-based drink. materials and methods. the enriched drink was formulated in two stages (i.e. the standard and the product). the initial product was enriched with iron and folic acid and its final organoleptic acceptance was then determined. results. the arequipe-flavoured mamá vitae milk-based drink formulation had 86% acceptance. it included 10 mg aminochelated iron and 230 ??g pteroylmonoglutamate per 200 ml milk portion and supplied 17% of the recommended iron and 33% folic acid intake for pregnant women. conclusion. the product's characteristics favoured better nutritional conditions for pregnant women and fertile females who want to plan a viable pregnancy. this type of product is epidemiologically necessary for vulnerable populations such as expectant and breast-feeding mothers.
