Abstract: the first half of the xx century can be examined through political, historical and cultural events that influenced the whole generation of writers, artists and intellectuals. in this complex fabric are intertwined the binomials history and literature and literature and politics, in which can be inserted the trajectory of ignazio silone. his intellectual production reflects his insertion in the world and the experience of the experienced in life, which also bear the mark of totalitarian regimes, fascism, antifascism and by exile: marks of an existence that permeate and nourish silone's literary speech.

Tc99m-HMPAO white blood cell scintigraphy: added value of SPECT/CT for infection diagnosis in cardiothoracic surgery
Napoleone Prandini,Stefano Panareo,Rosario Cultrera,Chiara Peterle
Chest Disease Reports , 2012, DOI: 10.4081/cdr.2012.e5
Abstract: We report a case of a woman who came to our attention because of fever and a sternal fistula draining purulent fluid. Four years before, she had undergone cardiothoracic surgery to place a patch because of a myocardial rupture. Under suspicion of a deep mediastinal infection, a Tc99m-HMPAO white blood cell (WBC) scintigraphy was performed. The use of planar imaging and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging allowed the identification of a sternal infection, which involved the anterior mediastinum up to pericardium and diaphgram. SPECT/CT led to a precise diagnosis of a thoracic infection, providing the location and extent of the disease. This turned out useful to improve therapeutic strategies.
Monitoring Recreational Waters: How to Integrate Environmental Determinants  [PDF]
Patricia Turgeon
Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2012.328095
Abstract: Recreational waters are associated with a higher risk of disease for people engaged in activities that bring them into contact with these waters. The primary cause of contamination of recreational waters is fecal microorganisms, which may originate from various sources and involve several modulating factors, making it a complex public health and en- vironmental issue. Monitoring recreational water quality should include two key components: Microbial water testing and monitoring environmental determinants associated with higher risks of contamination. Conducting both activities provides the foundation for a comprehensive assessment according to risk and the actual level of fecal pollution and thus could promote good management actions to ensure safe water quality. Nevertheless, monitoring of environmental determinants is rarely fully integrated in monitoring programs and is also harder to achieve, especially when water pol- lution is mainly associated with nonpoint sources. In order to achieve identification and monitoring of environmental determinants associated with fecal contamination of recreational waters, some specific steps should be followed and some questions must be answered. The objective of this review article is to present current knowledge on this topic and to suggest and discuss recommendations. Potential sources of contamination and factors able to modulate them should be identified and measured after the geographical area influencing fecal contamination of recreational water has been delineated. Statistical models have been developed to identify the relative importance of these environmental characteristics on fecal pollution of recreational waters but they do not allow for a full comprehension of the exact processes leading to this pollution, thus other methods should also be used to better understand these processes.
Availability and accessibility of diabetes clinics on Trinidad: An analysis using proximity tools in a GIS environment  [PDF]
Patricia Boda
Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.511A2006
Abstract:

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), account for a growing number of deaths worldwide. The English-speaking Caribbean has the highest per capita burden of NCDs in the region of the Americas [1]. This paper presents an overview of availability and accessibility based on clinic hours and physician fulltime equivalents (FTE) on the island of Trinidad devoted to diabetes and wound care. The project integrates a Geographic Information System (GIS) with epidemiologic and bio-statistical data to provide a necessary spatial analysis not otherwise possible. It examines the island’s ability to effectively deliver treatment to residents with diabetes by providing a geographic perspective to data published on the internet by the Trinidad-Tobago Ministry of Health and the Central Statistical Office. Results indicate a significant regional variability in both numbers of physicians and office hours devoted to diabetes treatment.

Constitui??o das regras e o desenvolvimento moral na teoria de piaget: uma reflex?o Kantiana

Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722009000100010
Abstract: the games of rules have complex systems of rules expressed in socio-cultural relations favoring, according to piaget, the study of autonomy versus heteronomy - a dimension of the moral development. our aim was to analyze the importance of the rules' constitution for piaget, examining his appropriations of kantian terms, providing a reflection on terms that have been differently used from their original philosophical meanings. we observed that the differentiation between the two moral systems and the conception of respect are kantian presuppositions used by piaget. we concluded that the understanding of the moral development in the piagetian theory became evident when terms in the kantian writings are specified.

Bragantia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87052009000200027
Abstract: this research aimed to evaluate the quality of gala apples submitted to different ways of ethylene handling, through inhibition of synthesis, inhibition of action and ethylene absorption in storage room, associated with two temperatures. the treatments originated from the combination between two temperatures (0.5 °c e -0.5 °c) and application of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (avg), 1- methylcyclopropene (1-mcp) and ethylene absorption. all treatments were stored in controlled atmosphere with 1.2 kpa o2 + 2.5 kpa co2. ripening and quality evaluations were carried out after eight months of storage more seven days at 20 °c. preharvest avg application maintained fruit skin greener at the opening of storage rooms. after seven days at 20°c, the treatment with avg resulted in greener skin, with lesser decay incidence, higher flesh firmness and less senescent breakdown incidence. the lower ethylene production of avg-treated apples resulted in lower respiration and highest titratable acidity levels. the temperature of 0.5 °c maintained higher of the titratable acidity and reduced senescent breakdown incidence when compared with the temperature of -0.5 oc. the ethylene absorption and 1-mcp application were also efficient in the control of the senescent breakdown and loss of firmness, however less effective than avg treatment.
