Journal of Fisheries International , 2012,
Abstract: The effect of the density and nutritional quality of the diet on the growth and survival of the organism had been evaluated in different species of Mollusk. In bivalve low growth and survival had been registered in high densities of culture and poorer nutritional quality of the diet. The scallop Lyropecten (Nodipecten) subnodosus is an organism with a high commercial value. However, in this species few researches had been performed to evaluate the effect of the density and nutritional quality of the diet on the growth and survival, principally in stages of larvae and spat. The objective in this study was to evaluate the effect of the survival and nutritional quality of the diet on the growth and survival of L. (N.) subnodosus spat. In this study, the results of growth and survival obtained to show significant differences between densities and nutritional quality of the diet. The major results of length, total dry weight, organic content and survival were obtained in the organism cultured in the lowest density and fed with the mixture diet M1 (Pavlova lutheri and Chaetoceros calcitrans). The mixture diet M1 registered the higher content of protein, carbohydrates and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These components had been essential to the growth and survival of the spat stage, due to its high requirements of protein and fatty acids used for the somatic growth. For this reason the high growth and survival were registered in the organism cultured in the lowest density and fed with high protein content and adequate percentages of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (M1).

Abstract: To address current challenges regarding sustainable development of wastewater treatment and provide scientific support in decision procedures towards sustainable solutions, new approaches, frameworks and methodologies about different possible solutions and their potential sustainability implications are needed. One way to facilitate sustainability assessment of wastewater is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology; however, it fails to map the full scope of wastewater impacts. This paper presents a framework to evaluate the performance of Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WWTF) taking into consideration various factors for insuring environmental sustainability. A total of nine indicators, seven environmental and two economic related to four wastewater treatment facilities, were assessed. Apart from evaluating the sustainability, this study also discussed the link of life cycle approach and social aspects of wastewater. The results show that for the environmental dimension using LCA provides information on different types of environmental activities and different impact categories. LCA can thus be used to quantify and compare the multiple types of impacts caused by one type of use or emission, as well as the various resource uses or emissions that contribute to one type of impacts. For the economic dimension, there is still a need for consistent and robust indicators and methods. The empirical results suggest that the environmental sustainability framework can be used in the first phase of the decision procedure that leads to a strategic choice for sustainable resource recovery from wastewater in developing countries. This motives researchers and decision-makers to consider the whole picture, and not just individual aspects, when considering different futures scenarios.

The experience shared in this article refers basically to two challenges. On one hand, adapting a faceto-face course taught in the Mexican context to an international on-line course. On the other, the topic itself, which presents academic content related to moral education in a virtual environment where human interaction is limited. The purpose of this paper is to narrate the process followed in facing these two challenges. The course is called “Teacher’s practice and school convivencia” and it belongs to a Certificate offered by the Latin American Convivencia Network (Red Lationamericana de Convivencia Escolar). In this text we highlight the pedagogical design of the on-line course, as well as certain characteristics of the discussion forum, which became a powerful tool for facilitating reflective dialogues among Latin American educators. By sharing their own realities, informed by

Abstract: The cellular strategy leading to formation of neuronal circuits in the rodent barrel cortex is still a matter of controversy. Both selective and constructive mechanisms have been proposed. The selective mechanism involves an overproduction of neuronal processes and synapses followed by activity dependent pruning. Conversely, a constructive mechanism would increase the number of axons, dendrites, and synapses during development to match functionality. In order to discern the contributions of these two mechanisms in establishing a neuronal circuit in the somatosensory cortex, morphometric analysis of dendritic and axonal arbor growth was performed. Also, the number of synapses was followed by electron microscopy during the first month of life. We observed that axonal and dendritic arbors retracted distal branches, and elongated proximal branches, resulting in increased arbor complexity. This neuronal remodeling was accompanied by the steady increase in the number of synapses within barrel hollows. Similarly, the content of molecular markers for dendrites, axons and synapses also increased during this period. Finally, cytochrome oxidase activity rose with age in barrels indicating that the arbors became more complex while synapse density and metabolic demands increased. Our results support the simultaneous use of both selective and constructive mechanisms in establishing the barrel cortex circuitry.

Abstract: Methods based on real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can speed up the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis but are limited by a lack of standardization. We evaluated the commercially available MycAssay? Aspergillus test for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis in patients without hematological cancer. We prospectively collected 322 lower respiratory tract samples (November 2009–January 2011) from 175 patients with lower respiratory tract infection and the following predisposing conditions: solid cancer (16.8%), cirrhosis (16.8%), corticosteroid therapy (71.7%), HIV infection (15.6%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, 52.6%), solid organ transplantation (kidney [1.2%], heart [3%], liver [4.6%]), or none (3.5%). Specimens were obtained when clinically indicated and analyzed in the microbiology laboratory. Aspergillus DNA was extracted and amplified by means of MycXtra? and MycAssay? Aspergillus. Aspergillus spp. was isolated from 65 samples (31 patients). According to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer and Bulpa's criteria (for patients with COPD), 15 had probable invasive aspergillosis. MycAssay? Aspergillus results were negative (n = 254), positive (n = 54), or indeterminate (n = 14). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic odds ratio of the MycAssay? (first sample/any sample) were 86.7/93, 87.6/82.4, 34.1/34.1, 92.2/100, and 48/68.75. The differences between the proportion of samples with positive PCR determinations (63%) and the proportion of samples with Aspergillus spp. isolation (75%) did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.112). The median time from sample culture to visualization of fungal growth was 3 days, compared with ~4 hours for MycAssay? Aspergillus PCR. MycAssay? Aspergillus showed high sensitivity for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis in patients without hematological cancer. Sensitivity increased when multiple samples were used. Compared with fungal culture, PCR significantly reduced the time to diagnosis.
