Abstract: the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of carnauba wax (primax wax) and low-density polyethylene film "x-tend" on shelf life of 'formosa' papaya fruits produced in baraúna, rn. the experiment was carried out in the postharvest laboratory of the universidade federal rural do semi-árido (ufersa). a 3 x 6 factorial scheme with three replications of three fruits per plot in a completely randomized design was used. the treatments consisted of the combination of three types of atmosphere (wax, polyethylene film and control) with six storage times (0; 7; 14; 21; 28 and 35). the fruits of these treatments were stored in cold chamber at 10 ± 2 oc and rh 90 ± 5%, and analyzed in 7 days intervals. the evaluated traits were: external appearance, weight loss, pulp firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity and c vitamin. it was observed that polyethylene film was the most efficient coverage to keep the external quality and to reduce the weight loss of the papaya fruits. the carnauba wax in the used concentration shows good efficiency in papaya fruits conservation as compared with that polyethylene film. the shelf life of papaya fruits kept under modified atmosphere was of 35 days and for those fruits kept at ambient condition was of 28 days.

Abstract: Background The genus Paracoccidioides comprises human thermal dimorphic fungi, which cause paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), an important mycosis in Latin America. Adaptation to environmental conditions is key to fungal survival during human host infection. The adaptability of carbon metabolism is a vital fitness attribute during pathogenesis. Methodology/Principal Findings The fungal pathogen Paracoccidioides spp. is exposed to numerous adverse conditions, such as nutrient deprivation, in the human host. In this study, a comprehensive response of Paracoccidioides, Pb01, under carbon starvation was investigated using high-resolution transcriptomic (RNAseq) and proteomic (NanoUPLC-MSE) approaches. A total of 1,063 transcripts and 421 proteins were differentially regulated, providing a global view of metabolic reprogramming during carbon starvation. The main changes were those related to cells shifting to gluconeogenesis and ethanol production, supported by the degradation of amino acids and fatty acids and by the modulation of the glyoxylate and tricarboxylic cycles. This proposed carbon flow hypothesis was supported by gene and protein expression profiles assessed using qRT-PCR and western blot analysis, respectively, as well as using enzymatic, cell dry weight and fungus-macrophage interaction assays. The carbon source provides a survival advantage to Paracoccidioides inside macrophages. Conclusions/Significance For a complete understanding of the physiological processes in an organism, the integration of approaches addressing different levels of regulation is important. To the best of our knowledge, this report presents the first description of the responses of Paracoccidioides spp. to host-like conditions using large-scale expression approaches. The alternative metabolic pathways that could be adopted by the organism during carbon starvation can be important for a better understanding of the fungal adaptation to the host, because systems for detecting and responding to carbon sources play a major role in adaptation and persistence in the host niche.

Abstract: hearing loss is a multifaceted condition with many etiologies, among which genetic mutation is. therefore, it is important to connect audiological investigation to etiological diagnosis. aim: this study aims to establish the audiological and genetic profiles of three non-syndromic children with sensorineural hearing loss. materials and method: three brothers aged 3, 5 and 16 were enrolled in this study. they were submitted to behavioral and electrophysiological hearing tests and molecular studies. results: the hearing tests showed moderate to moderately severe bilateral symmetric sensorineural hearing loss and an accentuated descending slope. transient and distortion product otoacoustic emissions were absent in the two younger children. abr showed a bilateral moderately severe to severe sensorineural hearing loss. p300 showed bilateral normal latencies in the older brother. molecular tests showed that the two younger children were heterozygote for mutation 35delg on gene gjb2. conclusion: the combination of speech and hearing tests and genetic analysis allows for the etiologic diagnosis of seemingly similar hearing loss cases, which however display different genetic backgrounds. molecular studies must be comprehensive enough to avoid precipitated diagnosis which may impair genetic counseling.

Abstract: this study aims at investigating the evolution of the moraic structure from latin to portuguese. latin, which presents vocalic and consonantal quantitative distinction, has the following syllable patterns: (i) light syllable, which contains a single mora (e.le.men.tum); (ii) heavy syllable, which contains two moras (bul.ga); (iii) super heavy syllable, which contains three moras according to our argument (paul.lum). diachronically, there is a loss of quantitative distinctive among the vowels. from latin to neo-romance languages the moraic structure has its effects. based on such information and on hayes' moraic theory (1989), we intend to investigate the effects of such change in both languages by analyzing related phonological processes, such as diphthongization and monophthongation. moraic theory allows us both to identify the way moraic structures are attributed to languages and to determine which principles operate in these languages. hayes (1989) defines a mora as a weight unit at the prosodic tier and represents the contrast between long syllables and short syllables. also, a mora counts as a phonological position (a long segment is represented as being doubly linked). we argue that the choices made by the portuguese language to deal with moraic structure of latin had already been available in vulgar latin and, according to the choices made, principles such as stray erasure and parasitic delinking, which are related to prosodic licensing, acted in the aforementioned change
