Abstract: the aim of the present study was to investigate differences in mothers' childrearing practices toward children with and without behavior problems involving externalizing behaviors (clinical and non-clinical group, respectively). thirty mother-child dyads from both low and medium-low ses level participated in the study. children were of both sexes, with ages ranging from five to six years. the dyads were assigned to the clinical or non-clinical group based on the children's scores on the child behavior checklist (cbcl). the mothers were interviewed about their childrearing practices in both structured and spontaneous situations. content analysis of the interviews regarding the structured situations revealed that the mothers of the clinical group mentioned significantly more coercive practices than did mothers of the non-clinical group. the same trend appeared in the spontaneous situations, although the differences were not significant.

Abstract: the present work aimed at investigating relations between maternal child-rearing practices, externalizing behavior problems and social competence indicators of thirty-month-old children. the study involved 23 child-mother dyads. in the child's thirtieth month after birth, an observation of mother-child interaction was performed in order to evaluate maternal child-rearing practices, externalizing behavior problems and child social competence. the results support the literature about social development that relates child-rearing practices such as guidance, assertive control and positive parental involvement to social competence, and coercive and permissive practices to externalizing behavior problems. the work discusses the relevance of parental child-rearing practices for the comprehension of the social development, emphasizing the importance of child-rearing practices, such as autonomy authorization, intrusiveness and ambiguous control.

Abstract: the study aimed at investigating the impact of children temperament, maternal responsiveness and maternal childrearing practices on children externalizing behavior problems and social competence. the study involved 23 child-mother dyads from different socio-economical backgrounds. in the baby's third month after birth, child temperament and maternal responsiveness were evaluated. in the child's thirteenth month after birth, maternal childrearing practices, externalizing behavior problems and child social competence were investigated. multiple regression analysis revealed that only maternal childrearing practices were significant to explain the variance in the externalizing behaviors and social competence. the work discusses the relevance of parental practices and the limitations of the evaluation of temperament and maternal responsiveness as predictors for the comprehension of social development.

Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2012000500015
Abstract: this study investigated the relations between the child's temperamental characteristics assessed when the infant was eight months old and maternal childrearing practices assessed when the child was 18 months old. participants were 28 mother-child dyads consisting of healthy, male infants and their mothers of low socioeconomic status living in the city of salvador. the revised infant temperament questionnaire and the structured interview about maternal childrearing practices were used. content analysis allowed the maternal childrearing practices to be classified into practices facilitating social development and non-facilitating practices. there were moderate correlations between the threshold of response and the approach-withdrawal dimensions and the total score of temperament and maternal childrearing practices. however, regression analysis did not confirm any of these relationships. the relevance of moderator and mediator variables in this relationship and the peculiarities of the instrument used for assessing temperament are discussed.

Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2012000200001
Abstract: the present study compared coercive childrearing practices between mothers of different socioeconomic status. participants in the study were 40 mothers of children of both sexes, aged 5 to 6 years. twenty mothers were of low socioeconomic status, and twenty mothers were of medium/high socioeconomic status according to the criteria established by hollingshead. the mothers were administered a sociodemographic data form and were interviewed about childrearing practices. the results indicated that the mothers of low socioeconomic status exhibited a greater average frequency of responses in the corporal punishment category. the relations between sociodemographic variables and coercive practices are discussed, emphasizing the effects of schooling on the greater variability in the maternal repertoire for regulating child behavior.

Abstract: studies indicate that the presence of physical chronic disease in childhood may constitute an important factor to the quality of mother-child interaction. however, few studies investigate the childrearing practices in children with physical chronic disease. the daily care demand by the disease treatment as well as the child physical and emotional fragility may affect the childrearing practices. fourty mothers participated in this study, half of them with a child with physical chronic disease and the other with a child without this condition. the children were of both sexes, 3 to 4 years old. the participants were selected in public hospitals and schools. a semi-structured interview was used to investigate the mother's childrearing practices, examined by content analysis. the results show a marginally significant difference showing that the group of mothers of the chronic disease children uses coercive practices less frequently. moreover, there was a significant difference between the groups in relation to the use of physical punishment and privation/penalty, suggesting that mothers of chronic disease children use less frequently this type of practice. the results support the initial hypothesis that mothers of chronic disease children would be less coercive when compared to mothers of the other group.

Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2012000100004
Abstract: this study investigated the relationship between maternal upbringing and externalizing behavior problems in childhood. participants in the study included 64 mother-child dyads recruited from public (68.8%) and private (31.3%) schools in salvador, in the brazilian state of bahia, via a convenience sampling method and through referral by other participants. the data were collected during home visits or in school. mothers completed a socio-demographic data form, underwent a structured interview about the practice of maternal upbringing and the child behavior checklist 4-18. a multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the model that included mother's schooling, family income, negotiation and corporal punishment as predictor variables of externalizing behavior problems, accounted for 15.8% of the variance in externalizing behavior problems. the impact of corporal punishment on the development of externalizing behaviors and the predictive power of the level of instruction and family income in relation to the child's upbringing, are discussed.
