Giant Cell Tumour of Tendon Sheath in Thumb—A Case Report  [PDF]

Abstract: Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath is the second most common tumor of the hand often referred to as xanthoma. Histologically these tumors are composed of multinucleated giant cells, polyhedral histiocytes, fibrosis and hemosiderin deposits. Marginal excision of giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath is the treatment of choice. We present a case of xanthoma of flexor pollicis longus tendon presented as a single enlarging mass in volar aspect of left thumb. After clinical diagnosis, work-up is done with ultrasound, FNAC and excision biopsy.

We report results from the investigation of the nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient of {(1Z)-[4-(Dimethylamino)phenyl]methylene} 4-nitrobenzocarboxy hydrazone mono-hydrate (DMPM4NBCHM) solution using Z-scan technique with a continuous wave (CW) Argon ion laser. The results show that this type of organic material has a large nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index at 488 nm and 514 nm. The origin of the nonlinear effects was discussed. We demonstrate that the light induced nonlinear refractive index variation, leads to limiting effect. The results indicated that DMPM4NBCHM could be promising candidates for application on nonlinear photonic devices and optical limiters.

Abstract: Tonsillectomy once was a most common ENT procedure, being referred in past as the “bread and butter of otorhinolaryngologists” though not so commonly performed these days. The usual complications of this procedure have been haemorrhage-primary/reactionary/secondary, infection, tonsillar bed structures injury, and even death. With the advent of newer technologies like lasers, microdebriders, coblators, harmonic scalpel, radiofrequency, newer complications also arise. This case report focuses on one such complication of laser assisted tonsillectomy, not much spoken of in books.

Abstract: A buck-type single-phase AC to DC converter is proposed in this paper. The conventional semiconverter which uses thyristors at line frequency has a very poor power factor (PF). Therefore, the semiconverter is modified to a new converter using metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs). This new converter is operated at constant switching frequency and variable duty cycle, using a very simple control scheme in voltage follower mode to achieve almost unity PF and low total harmonic distortion (THD). The output voltage is kept constant irrespective of variaions in the line voltage. The converter is analyzed and simulated to check the validity. The line current drawn by the converter is almost sinusoidal and harmonics are within the class A and class D limits imposed by harmonic standard IEC 61000-3-2.

Abstract: MANET (Mobile Ad hoc Network) is a self organizing and self configuring network without the need of any centralized base station. It is a collection of nodes that is connected through a wireless medium forming rapidly changing topologies. MANETs are infrastructure less and can be set up anytime, anywhere. In MANETs, the nodes are mobile and battery operated. As the nodes have limited battery resources and multi hop routes are used over a changing network environment due to node mobility, it requires energy efficient routing protocols to limit the power consumption, prolong the battery life and to improve the robustness of the system. This paper evaluates the performance of various ad hoc routing protocols such as DSDV, AODV, and DSR in terms of energy efficiency by varying pause time, node velocity and packet sending rate.. Simulation is done using NS-2(version NS-2.34). It has been verified through extensive simulations, which represent a wide spectrum of network conditions that AODV delivers the better performance as that of the state-ofthe-art algorithms DSDV and DSDV but it is observed that DSR needs significantly smaller energy expenditure than AODV and DSDV.

Abstract: The research in wireless communication has spurred the development of extra ordinary range of antennas, each with its own advantage and limitations. There are many applications where space is at premium, and where there is an urgent need for an antenna with the flexibility to efficiently combine the capabilities of multiple antennas. In fact rapidly developing market in personal communication systems (PCS), mobile satellite communications, direct broadband television (DBS) wireless local area networks (WLANs) suggest that demand for Microstrip antennas and array will increase even further. Conventional Microstrip patch antennas has some drawbacks of low efficiency, narrow bandwidth (3-6%) of the central frequency, its bandwidth is limited to a few percent which is not enough for most of the wireless communication systems nowadays. In this paper one of the efficient methods used for the enhancement of patch antenna bandwidth is the loading of rectangular microstrip patch antenna with two square slots across its side surface. This type of Microstrip patch antenna meets the requirement of operation for wireless applications. The proposed configuration is simulated and analyzed using GENESYS software package. The VSWR, input impedance and S11 performance are used for the analysis of the different configurations. The simulated results for square slots antenna structure give bandwidth of 311 MHZ. Feed point on the patch that gives a good match of 50 ohm. The results of the fabricated microstrip antenna give the bandwidth of 286 MHz.
