Forecasting Short Time Series with Missing Data by Means of Energy Associated to Series  [PDF]

Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/am.2015.69143
Abstract: In this work an algorithm to predict short times series with missing data by means energy associated of series using artificial neural networks (ANN) is presented. In order to give the prediction one step ahead, a comparison between this and previous work that involves a similar approach to test short time series with uncertainties on their data, indicates that a linear smoothing is a well approximation in order to employ a method for uncompleted datasets. Moreover, in function of the long- or short-term stochastic dependence of the short time series considered, the training process modifies the number of patterns and iterations in the topology according to a heuristic law, where the Hurst parameter H is related with the short times series, of which they are considered as a path of the fractional Brownian motion. The results are evaluated on high roughness time series from solutions of the Mackey-Glass Equation (MG) and cumulative monthly historical rainfall data from San Agustin, Cordoba. A comparison with ANN nonlinear filters is shown in order to see a better performance of the outcomes when the information is taken from geographical point observation.

Physics , 2013,
Abstract: We carried out a multiwavelength cross-correlation analysis of a sample of 16 blazars detected by Fermi/LAT. The purpose is to investigate if there exists correlations between the distinct bands we analyze in this work. We searched for cross-correlated delays between emissions in optical, near-infrared and {\gamma}-ray bands for 16 blazars detected by Fermi-LAT, using three methods previously discussed in the literature: the interpolated cross-correlation function, the discrete cross-correlation function and the Z-transformed discrete cross-correlation function. Our results confirm the expectation that in all our sample the four NIR bands vary simultaneously. For three objects of our sample (3C 273, Mrk 501, and PMN J0808-0751), no correlation is found between any of the bands available for this study. For the remaining thirteen, a correlation was found between the V band and the NIR bands, indicating that in most of them the V band and the NIR bands vary simultaneously. For 4 objects (3C 454.3, PKS 0235+164, PKS 1510-089, and PKS 2155-304) a delayed correlation between the {\gamma}-ray emission and the NIR+V bands was found.

Información tecnológica , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-07642012000200006
Abstract: non-photochemical advanced oxidation technologies, ozonation and electrochemical oxidation, as alternative technologies to treat wastewaters from biodiesel production were applied. the physicochemical characterization of the wastewaters showed high levels in biochemical and chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon and residual methanol. both technologies increased the wastewater biodegradability and showed similar efficiencies in the reduction of the organic loads, with chemical oxygen demand removal between 5 and 9 % and total organic carbon removal between 9 and 11 %. however the ozonation showed to be a more versatile technology to be implemented on a larger scale as a system for treatment alone or coupled to biological processes that are typically used in treating waters with high organic load.

Abstract: factors determining the adoption of water conservation practices are specific to the study sites and need to be identified to develop local policies. objective: identify factors that determine the adoption of water conservation practices in cattle farms in a high andean watershed, given that this area is considered a conservation priority in caldas province, colombia. methods: in this study, five factor categories related to the adoption of conservation practices were used as a reference. the study quantified variables obtained by survey from february to april 2009. a total of 69 farmers were surveyed. a logit regression model was used to explain adoption of conservation practices. significant variables were plotted to measure their effect on the probability of practice adoption. results: model results show that although factors related to biophysical properties (nac and lim) along with risk and uncertainty factors (ten and cap) were significant, other factors are also significant in the study area, such as those related with decision makers (edu) and farm resources (tam). conclusions: regarding the effect of significant variables on the probability of adoption, it is not necessary to reach a conclusion about which ones are most important; however, the model results and the determination of the effects offer keys to direct the conservation actions in the area, allowing to generate recommendations in this regard that can be used as reference in cattle areas around high andean aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract: several studies have showed the antibacterial activity of oregano essential oils (oeo) chemotypes, carvarol and thymol against gram positive and gram negative pathogenic bacteria, but lack information on oeo antibacterial activity against beneficial bacteria. the object of this study was to compare the composition and minimum bactericidal concentration (mbc) of origanum gender chemotypes: o. vulgare l. ssp. hirtum (oh), o. majorana (om) y o. vulgare l. (ol) harvested in colombia, against lippia origanoides kunth (lo) from alto patía in colombia, and o. vulgare l. ssp. hirtum (og) from greece. the oeo composition was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer and its antibacterial activity by broth dilution and agar culture method. three chemotypes were evaluated, oh and og were carvacrol-type, lo and ol were thymol-tipe and om was rich in sabinyl compound. the highest precursors content was showed to oeo from oregano varieties produced under greenhouse conditions at high altitude. the same bactericidal activity against salmonella enteritidis (0.098 mg/ml) for oh and lo was founded. the lowest bactericidal activity against beneficial bacteria lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium breve was observed for om (6.25 mg/ml) and lo (50 mg/ml), respectively. these results showed that lo native to colombia had a comparable effect to oh and carvacrol against pathogenic enterobacteria and the lowest bactericidal activity against beneficial bacteria. these results showed a selective bactericidal effect against pathogenic beneficial bacteria of origanum ssp. and l. origanoides chemotypes. a good potential to use l. origanoides as antimicrobial additive for animal and human health was found.

Revista de Biología Tropical , 2011,
Abstract: vaccinium meridionale is a promising crop for the andean region of south america and is currently available only in the wild. spontaneous populations of this plant are found across the colombian mountains, but very few published records on this plant morphology are available. a zonification study of v. meridionale was conducted in four principal areas of a low mountain forest of colombia (provinces of boyacá, cundinamarca, santander and nari?o) in 2007. a total of 20 populations and 100 plants of v. meridionale were individually characterized and surveyed, using a list of 26 characters of morphological variables (9 quantitative and 17 qualitative characters). our results indicated that natural populations of v. meridionale might be found in the tropical forest under a highly heterogeneous climate and microclimate conditions, at different mountain regions between 2 357 and 3 168masl. the shrubs of v. meridionale exhibited a high level of intra-population variation in several quantitative (plant height, stem diameter) and qualitative (growth habit, ramification density, presence of anthocyanins in stems) morphological characters, suggesting an environmentally induced phenotypic plasticity. plant height, stem diameter and foliar density were the most variable morphological traits, with coefficients of variation higher than 50%. however, several quantitative characters of its reproductive potential, such as berry dimensions, rachis length and number of flowers per inflorescence, resulted with low plasticity with coefficients of variation lower than 30.2%, indicating that these characters were genetically determined. the highest correlation coefficients (p<0.05) resulted to be between fruit length and fruit width (0.90), leaf length and leaf width (0.78), plant height and stem diameter (0.60), and inflorescence length and flowers number per inflorescence (0.57). the results suggest that an important genetic resource exists for this species in the wild. low variation in f
