Abstract: The aim of this article is to demonstrate which notions can be related for a better understanding of the term phrase in émile Benveniste’s work (1974/2006,1966/2005). In order to do so, we investigated how this term is treated in two texts by this author, in which he gives major emphasis to this theme: Os níveis de análise linguística and A forma e o sentido na linguagem. In the analysis of these texts, we highlighted excerpts that deal with the term phrase and point the notions which are attached to it. Thereby, we can conclude that the term phrase is connected to the notions of form and meaning, of semantic domain and of reference.

Purpose: To evaluate the in vitro fracture resistance of roots with glass-fiber and metal dowels with different designs. Methods: Fifty-endodontically treated maxillary central incisors were embedded in acrylic resin. Ten of them received only the coronary preparation, and the remaining forty were embedded (except for 4mm of the cervical area) after removing the clinical crowns. Specimens were divided into five groups (n=10): control (teeth with only coronary preparation), cylindrical cast dowel, conical cast dowel, cylindrical glass-fiber dowel and conical glass-fiber dowel. Specimens were subjected to an increasing compressive load (N) until fracture. Results: ANOVA indicated significant difference (P<. 05) among the groups, and the TukeyKramer′s test identified these differences. The control group (867±243 N) presented the highest values and was statistically similar to cylindrical glass-fiber dowel group (711±180 N). There is no significant difference among the metal dowel cylindrical (435±245 N) or conical (585±164 N) group and conical glass-fiber dowel (453±112 N). Cylindrical glass-fiber dowel (711±180 N) and conical cast dowel and core (585±164 N) groups had intermediate values and d

Abstract: background and objectives: perioperative myocardial ischemia is commonly observed, and it can increase significantly postoperative morbidity and mortality. the cardioprotective properties of volatile anesthetics and opioids have been studied during several decades and currently constitute powerful tools in the management of patients with ischemic coronariopathy. the objective of this review was to provide the fundaments of myocardial protection by preconditioning. contents: the concepts of cellular damage secondary to ischemia and reperfusion, ischemic preconditioning (ipc), and anesthetic preconditioning (apc), as well as the mechanisms of myocardial protection, are discussed. recent studies in cardiac surgery demonstrated that the use of short periods of ischemia during reperfusion can reduce the area of myocardial infarction. volatile anesthetic can also have a protective effect in myocardial reperfusion. independently of the signaling pathway that leads to preconditioning, both anesthetic and ischemic, mitochondrial dependent katp channels are considered the final mediators of cardioprotection by controlling the mitochondrial influx of calcium and, therefore, preventing the induction of necrosis and apoptosis. although ipc and apc effectively reduce the area of myocardial infarction and improve postoperative ventricular function, it is important to stress that those treatments should be instituted before ischemic events to justify their clinical applicability. conclusions: phenomena known as myocardial ischemic preconditioning and anesthetic preconditioning are well known, and the mechanism of protection is similar in both situations; however, not every step that leads to this protection has been fully explained. further studies are necessary to increase the clinical applicability of the cardioprotective properties of anesthetics.

Abstract: Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) has a major impact on mobility and the loss of productivity of patients, especially knee OA (KOA). Obesity is one of the main risk factors for the incidence and prevalence of KOA. Weight loss alone decreases pain and improves quality of life and functional scores. Objective: To use BMI, body fat, and calorie intake to measure the effect of a multi-professional educational program on patients with KOA and correlate these measurements with subjective questionnaire results. Methods: A total of 198 patients undergoing standard treatment for KOA were randomized to 4 groups. All groups received written and video information regarding KOA. Three groups (1, 2 and 3) also attended two days of lectures 1, 2 and 3 months apart, respectively, whereas group 4 did not. Each group was divided into subgroups A (bimonthly telephone calls) and B (no telephone calls). All patients were evaluated at baseline and at one year for BMI, waist-hip ratio (WHR), percentage of body fat, and calorie intake and with the WOMAC, LEQUESNE, VAS and SF-36 questionnaires. Results: The WHR showed 89.4% of android obesity at baseline and 87.9% at one year without improvement (p = 0.38). Body fat decreased by 0.44% regardless of group or subgroup. Calorie intake was different between groups (p = 0.019) according to phone calls and follow-up (p = 0.03). BMI and body fat percentage were correlated with the WOMAC, WOMAC pain, VAS and LEQUESNE scores at baseline and at reassessment. Weight was correlated with the baseline results of the WOMAC pain (r = 0.175, p = 0.014), VAS (r = 0.155, p = 0.029), LEQUESNE (r = 0.161, p = 0.023), SF-36-PCS (r = ?0.186, p = 0.009) and SF-36-MCS (r = 0.155, p = 0.029) scores and with the one-year results of the WOMAC (r = 0.155, p = 0.029) and WOMAC pain (r = 0.151, p = 0.034) scores. Conclusion: The multi-professional treatment program had very little impacts on the percentage of body fat. This improvement was independent of classes, telephone calls, or improvements in pain, function and quality of life. Calorie intake improvement was influenced by telephone calls and classes but was not associated with objective measurements of/or changes in weight, BMI, or body fat percentage or with subjective improvements.

Abstract: one of the major problems in research and health practice related to impairment is the inaccuracy of definitions all over the world, which makes it difficult to exchange information obtained by different authors. in this paper, the concepts of impairment, disability and handicap are discussed based on the publication by the national secretariat for rehabilitation of the world health organization (portugal, 1989) and the analysis of recent publications related to this subject. four categories were established: a) concepts; b) application of concepts; c) questions related to terminology and; d) theoretical models and their implication. disparities, consistencies and breadth of this literature were also analyzed giving emphasis to the importance of the terminology used to provide general understanding and better communication between experts.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to characterize the soil fauna and assessing the effects of harvest method and vinasse application in areas of sugar cane compared to a forest area. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments (manual harvesting with use of fire and mechanical harvesting without use of fire associate to or not vinasse application fertilizer and forest), five repetitions for six sampling times. Retired monoliths 25 cm x 25 cm x 30 cm, where soil organisms were sorted and classified into groups and /or order. The characterization of the treatments was performed by principal component analysis. Having previously calculated the density of organisms, the ecological indices of diversity (Shannon), evenness (Pielou) and richness of groups, these were compared by Duncan or Kruskal-Wallis test at 5%. Compared with the areas of sugar cane , the forest area has the highest calculated indices. The treatments of sugar cane with maintenance of straw and /or vinasse application favor soil fauna.

Abstract: the discussed issue about replacing the use of antibiotics in animal feed (growth promoters) requires emerging alternatives. to meet the needs of microbial inhibitors in these foods, the essentials oils (eos) constitute potential alternatives under evaluation. in this study it was evaluated the antimicrobial activities of eos from oreganum vulgare (oregano), thymus vulgaris (thyme), lippia graveolens (mexican oregano), cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon), zingiber officinale (ginger), salvia officinalis (sage), rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) and ocimum basilicum (basil) against escherichia coli strains isolated from poultry (n=43) and cattle faeces (n=36). the minimum inhibitory concentration (mic) and minimum bactericidal concentration (mbc) were determined for each isolate by using the broth microdilution technique, from the maximum concentration of 6400μg ml-1 of each oe tested. antimicrobial activity was observed on the essential oils of oregano, mexican oregano, thymus and cinnamon. for all strains tested, regardless of their origin, the oes more and less effective as antimicrobial activity were oregano and cinnamon, respectively. these results confirm the antimicrobial potential of some eos, which deserve further research, addressing the addition of essential oils in poultry and cattle feeding.
