Abstract: because of the importance of meteorological variables in different processes that occur in the soil, the objective of this work was to evaluate the kinetics of carbon dioxide evolution (microbial activity) associated with the meteorological elements in areas in caatinga in the semiarid conditions of paraiba. the experiment was set in the field, in the bacia escola/cca/ufpb, municipality of s?o jo?o do cariri - pb. the daytime microbial activity, measured by the release of co2, was evaluated monthly from january to december 2008, in three adjacent areas of caatinga corresponding to the treatments: t1 (10 animals - 1 animal/3,200 m2), t2 (5 animals - 1 animal/6,400 m2) and t3 (control - no animals). the total area of the experiment was 9.6 ha and for each treatment it was used an area of 3.2 ha. six points of collection (set at random)were selected from each treatment. the treatments were distributed in completely randomized block design arranged in sub-divided plots (3×12×6), and 3 stocking rates (plot), 12 periods of evaluation (sub-plots) and 6 hours of evaluation (sub-subplots) and 3 blocks. the methodology was based on the principle that the co2 released by an area of soil is absorbed by a solution of 0.5 n koh and determined titrimetricallyc with hcl 0.1 n. the evolution of co2 varied throughout the day in function of weather factors, mainly temperature. the rate of co2 tended to release more in the afternoon. due to the importance of soil and air temperatures in many processes that occur in soil, more studies are needed in the semiarid region of brazil.

The objective in this experiment was to evaluate the effect of trampling goat on the density and some soil hydraulic properties in an area of caatinga in Cariri of Paraíba. The experiment was conducted at the “Experimental Bacia School”, in S o Jo o do Cariri-PB. The treatments consisted of three stocking rates and three paddocks: 3.1an/ha, 1.5an/ha and 0an/ha, from September 2007 to October 2008. We used a completely randomized design with 20 repeatability. Infiltration tests were performed and there were collected samples of soil at the beginning at the end of the experiment, after applicating treatments for analysis of soil density, water content, initial moisture content, final moisture content, sorptivity and hydraulic conductivity. The results showed that the goat trampling in areas of caatinga, in the periods studied, do not cause updates on the density, hydraulics conductivity, sorptivity and soil moisture. The ranges of the attributes of the land caused most physicists features soil physics proper to that of grazing goats, regardless of the stocking rates used.

This work aimed to evaluate the grazing behavior of heifers on Brachiarias, in continuous stocking with variable stocking rates. The experimental design was completely randomized, with two pastures representing the treatments, each with five replications. Dairy heifers were used, with an average weight of 315 kg. The experiment lasted for 30 days, being 20 for adaptation of the animals and 10 for the three evaluations, each with a duration of 24 hours, in five-dayintervals. Heifers grazed less time on the pasture of Brachiaria brizantha (10.56 hours), while the grazing on Brachiaria decumbens lasted 11.51 hours. Nevertheless, there was no difference for total bites. Heifers presented different grazing on the evaluated pastures, increasing grazing time on Brachiaria decumbens to adjust for a more selective behavior.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of goat grazing on the phenology of croton sonderianus müll. arg., caesalpinia pyramidalis tull, malva sylvestris l. and on aspidosperma pyrifolium mart. in a caatinga area in the cariri in the state of paraíba. the experiment was carried on the experimental farm "bacia escola" at the federal university of paraíba in s?o jo?o do cariri, state of paraíba, in 2008. five plants per paddock were monitorated, with weekly readings, totaling 28 in from march 5th 2008 to october19th, 2008 by observing the following variables: total number of leaves, green leaves, yellow leaves, dry leaves, fruit and flowers. the treatments consisted of three stocking rates and three pastures: t1 (3.1 an/ha), t2 (1.5 an/ha) and t3 (0 an/ha). for the analysis of the data, readings were grouped by date according to their respective weeks. it was noted effects of pasture on the observed phonological parameters, especially in the treatment with the largest stocking rate, for species of quince tree and mallow causing an early reduction of the total of leaves, flowers and fruits, promoting changes in the phenology of this species. pasture did not affect much on the phenology of pear tree and no effect was observed for "catingueira". it was observed that rain pulses were sufficient to trigger phonological effects in the species. rainfall interfered in the phenological behavior of the species, triggering the period of sprouting after the first rain, and the flowering and fruiting occurring in the middle of the rainy season. the fall of leaves occurs right after the end of rainy season for catingueira, quince and mallow, and it is more persistent for pear tree.

Abstract: an experiment was carried out to evaluate the ingestive behavior of calves on brachiaria brizantha and brachiaria decumbens pastures, under continuous stocking with variable stocking rate. the experimental design was entirely randomized, with two treatments (two pastures), and five replicates per treatment. the experimental period lasted 30 days, consisting of days 20 for adaptation of animals and 10 for behavioral evaluations that consisted of three periods of 24:00h each, in intervals of five days. the calves spent less time grazing brachiaria brizantha pasture (9,8h) than they did on the brachiaria decumbens (11,3h). different rumination times had been observed, 6,8 and 6,4 h for the animals grazing brachiaria brizantha and brachiaria decumbens, respectively. we suggested that the selective behavior of the calves on the brachiaria decumbens made them to eat good quality grass, thus they spent a similar rumination time to that observed for brachiaria brizantha. the number of bites per minute was inferior for the brachiaria decumbens, 31,2h, when compared with brachiaria brizantha (the mean bite rate was 34,9 bites per minute). the calves had a larger daily gain to brachiaria brizantha (390g day-1) than they had to brachiaria decumbens (340g day-1).

Abstract: it was evaluated the values of apparent metabolizable and apparent corrected energy (ame and amen, respectively), the coefficients of metabolization of gross energy (mcec and mcecn) and the digestibility of dm and om (addmc and adomc) of some feedstuffs for greater rhea averaging seven months old, by the techniques of total feces collection and chromium oxide as external marker. the experiment was analyzed as a complete randomized design with six treatments and three replications per experiment. the experiment was carried out three times senquentially. the values of addmc, adomc, ame, amen, mcec and mcecn of feedstuffs determined by total feces collection were greater than those determined with chromium oxide. the use of marker was not efficient to determine addmc, adomc, ame, amen, mcec and mcecn of the feedstuffs for greater rhea when compared to total feces collection method. it is recommended more studies of indirect techniques to estimate the digestibility parameters in similar assays.
