Ein narrativ-entwicklungspsychologischer Ansatz zur Untersuchung früher Emotionen A Narrative-Developmental Approach to Early Emotions Un enfoque narrativo-evolutivo para las emociones tempranas

Forum : Qualitative Social Research , 2001,
URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0103147 Over the past decades a great deal of attention has been dedicated to the broadening and diversification of the notion of narratives, which lead to a variety of models for narrative analysis and encouraged some to speak of a "narratological renaissance" (e.g., CURRIE, 1998; HERMAN, 1999). However, the application of these concepts to early development has faced a major challenge—the use of narratives (as both a theoretical framework and a methodological tool) to examine psychological processes prior to the acquisition of language. The present contribution offers a systematic approach to examine early emotional development grounded on narrative traditions. I begin by briefly presenting the relevant literature and linking it with the narrative-developmental approach proposed herein. This approach, I contend, implies that narratives and development are inextricably anchored to one another as narratives evolve over time th

Abstract: emotions have been investigated traditionally as internal and pre-existing states manifested in the face. this paper proposes an alternative perspective by illustrating the theoretical and methodological utility of the concepts of narratives and dynamic systems to the study of emotions. emotions are conceived as emerging from the interaction between the individual and the environment. we consider the body, vocal, and facial actions of both partners simultaneously, as well as the communicative contexts created during their interaction. we use the method of narrative analysis to capture the emergent and social nature of emotions in one mother-infant dyad during the second year of life. we aim to elucidate how the development of emotions emerge from the subtle transformations in the daily relationship of the mother-infant dyad.

Abstract: the road accident, the second cause of violent death in colombia, is a source of material and moral damages to persons. the norms of civil responsibility oblige the owner of a vehicle or driver to face civil and criminal consequences. the road accident problem and the evaluation of compensation, for material and moral damages, are of great interest due to the number of cases for homicides in traffic accidents in process in criminal courts during long periods in the cali jurisdiction. in the research made in the engeneering statistics school of valle university a collection of files was done and a survey was made to investigate the judicial policy used to calculate indemnisations in penal judgements in the cali circuit, where a big disparity in criteria of compensation is noted. moreover, there is no evidence of using a standard model for evaluating both material and moral damages; also there is no evidence of a top policy in this regard, in the observed sample. therefore, this study attempts to provide a reference framework for judges and prosecutors to assess the compensation and proposes a model in order to unify criteria for evaluating and fixing the amount of economic compensation to those affected, based on socio-economic characteristics of victims and their heirs. the resulting model proposes criteria used by insurance companies to determine the insurance premiums for life insurance, such as the age and income level of the deceased and their responsabilities to their family.

Abstract: postpartum thyroiditis (ppt) is an autoimmune thyroid dysfunction that occurs in the first year after delivery. we evaluated the prevalence and clinical evolution of ppt in 115 pregnant women between the 16th and 20th weeks of gestation. we studied both thyroid function (t3, t4, t4l, tsh) and the presence of antithyroid antibodies (antithyroglobulin and antiperoxidase). reevaluation was done six months postpartum. in the first phase, 12 (10.4%) were tpo-ab positive: two (16.6%) had a miscarriage between the 5th and 6th month, three (25%) were euthyroid, three (25%) subclinic hypothyroidism and four (33,3%) ppt. the most frequent symptom was fatigue (4/4). all women showed risk factors for ppt. based on our data, we recommend that pregnant women with risk factor for ppt should be screened during pregnancy and the postpartum period for the development of thyroid dysfunction.

Abstract: Background. An active device that downregulates abdominal vagal signalling has resulted in significant weight loss in feasibility studies. Objective. To prospectively evaluate the effect of intermittent vagal blocking (VBLOC) on weight loss, glycemic control, and blood pressure (BP) in obese subjects with DM2. Methods. Twenty-eight subjects were implanted with a VBLOC device (Maestro Rechargeable System) at 5 centers in an open-label study. Effects on weight loss, HbA1c, fasting blood glucose, and BP were evaluated at 1 week to 12 months. Results. 26 subjects (17 females/9 males, years, BMI ?kg/m2, mean?±?SEM) completed 12 months followup. One serious adverse event (pain at implant site) was easily resolved. At 1 week and 12 months, mean excess weight loss percentages (% EWL) were % and % ( ), and HbA1c declined by % and % ( , baseline %). In DM2 subjects with elevated BP ( ), mean arterial pressure reduced by ?mmHg and ?mmHg ( , baseline ?mmHg) at 1 week and 12 months. All subjects MAP decreased by ?mmHg (baseline ?mmHg) at 12 months. Conclusions. VBLOC was safe in obese DM2 subjects and associated with meaningful weight loss, early and sustained improvements in HbA1c, and reductions in BP in hypertensive DM2 subjects. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00555958. 1. Introduction It has been estimated that approximately 20 million adults in the USA have type 2 diabetes mellitus [1]. Worldwide, the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is now thought to be over 347 million [2]. In the USA alone, it is estimated that it will cost 147 billion dollars to take care of diabetes and its complications [1]. The majority of these individuals are obese. Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) are closely linked [3]—as body mass index (BMI) increases, there is a weight-dependent increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes [4]. Body weight reduction of just 5% can improve glycemic control in obese type 2 diabetics [5]. Current medical treatments are limited by many factors including subject’s compliance and high costs as well as by the inexorable progression of the disease and its complications. Current bariatric surgical procedures such as gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion or sleeve gastrectomy have demonstrated a significant beneficial impact on the glucose control even before significant weight loss occurs [6, 7]. However these procedures are invasive with the potential for serious complications and considerable professional and patient aversion. Given the severity of the problem, there is a societal need for a less invasive,

Chest pain associated with cocaine use is one of the most common symptoms reported by patients. It usually occurs in young subjects with no risk factors for coronary disease, and is independent of the history of substance abuse, although about a quarter of them denies its consumption. The percentage of those who present acute myocardial infarction after cocaine use is low, but the doctor should suspect this diagnosis and according to the risk, define the stratification strategy and the appropriate treatment.

Abstract: Numerous changes continue to occur in cochlear implant candidacy. In general, these have been accompanied by concomitant and satisfactory changes in surgical techniques. Together, this has advanced the utility and safety of cochlear implantation. Most devices are now approved for use in patients with severe to profound unilateral hearing loss rather then the prior requirement of a bilateral profound loss. Furthermore, studies have begun utilizing short electrode arrays for shallow insertion in patients with considerable low-frequency residual hearing. This technique will allow the recipient to continue to use acoustically amplified hearing for the low frequencies simultaneously with a cochlear implant for the high frequencies. The advances in design of, and indications for, cochlear implants have been matched by improvements in surgical techniques and decrease in complications. The resulting improvements in safety and efficacy have further encouraged the use of these devices. This paper will review the new concepts in the candidacy of cochlear implant. Medline data base was used to search articles dealing with the following topics: cochlear implant in younger children, cochlear implant and hearing preservation, cochlear implant for unilateral deafness and tinnitus, genetic hearing loss and cochlear implant, bilateral cochlear implant, neuropathy and cochlear implant and neural plasticity, and the selection of patients for cochlear implant.

Abstract: gene expression profiles contain the expression level of thousands of genes. depending on the issue under investigation, this large amount of data makes analysis impractical. thus, it is important to select subsets of relevant genes to work with. this paper investigates different metrics for gene selection. the metrics are evaluated based on their ability in selecting genes whose expression profile provides information to distinguish between tumor and normal tissues. this evaluation is made by constructing classifiers using the genes selected by each metric and then comparing the performance of these classifiers. the performance of the classifiers is evaluated using the error rate in the classification of new tissues. as the dataset has few tissue samples, the leave-one-out methodology was employed to guarantee more reliable results. the classifiers are generated using different machine learning algorithms. support vector machines (svms) and the c4.5 algorithm are employed. the experiments are conduced employing sage data obtained from the ncbi web site. there are few analysis involving sage data in the literature. it was found that the best metric for the data and algorithms employed is the metric logistic.
