A acupuntura no ocidente

Abstract: the recognition of acupuncture's effectiveness doesn't depend on the empirical demonstration of its results. there are methodological and conceptual barriers to the establishment of its therapeutical value, on a scientific basis. on the other hand, the increase of demand and supply of alternative therapies implies in a certain legitimation, which depends rather on the recognition of the utility of these practices, than on the demonstration of its scientific status. the crisis of the "scientific medicine" and its mechanistic paradigm may be one of the factors influencing the acceptation of acupuncture in the west. if this is true, scientific studies on acupuncture won't be very useful unless they admit the possibility of a medicine which has its own logic, different from the western science. perhaps the greatest contribution brought by the east to the western medicine is its knowledge, and not its technique. but it's only through the understanding of the chinese culture and civilization, the acceptance that yin and yang form a coherent system, that the tradicional knowledge can be really seized.

Abstract: the economical value of water has not been understood yet by society, mainly where quantitative restrictions do not exist. thus, in order to make the water use fee an instrument of environmental management, bringing benefits to all society, there must be an extensive process of elucidation, with popular mobilization through its diferent sectors organized in basin comittees to discuss the management of hydric resources.
Conflitos causados pela preda??o de rebanhos domésticos por grandes felinos em comunidades quilombolas na Mata Atlantica
Palmeira, Francesca Belem Lopes;Barrella, Walter;
Biota Neotropica , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-06032007000100017
Abstract: domestic livestock predation by jaguars (panthera onca) and pumas (puma concolor) was recorded from 1998 to 2000 and local opinion to solve the conflict was investigated in two quilombola communities in the atlantic forest. the householders were interviewed regularly from may 2000 to january 2001. predation depended on the number of domestic animals per household, and was apparently selective and possibly seasonal. the economic damage was high when associated with the low livestock number. people's attitude towards predators was negative and most of those surveyed (54%) suggested these animals should be eliminated. knowing the local perception is essential to adopt a participative management to reduce household losses and to guarantee large cats' conservation.
Ecomorphology and food habits of teleost fishes Trachinotus carolinus (Teleostei: Carangidae) and Menticirrhus littoralis (Teleostei: Sciaenidae), inhabiting the surf zone off Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: the ecomorphology and food habits of juvenile trachinotus carolinus and menticirrhus littoralis caught in the surf zone of sandy beaches in niterói, rj, were investigated between july 2006 and may 2007. these fish species differ morphologically, but present similarities in their diet composition suggest some slight overlapping in their diet. the importance of food items was assessed using kawakami and vazzoler's feeding index. morphometric variables were recorded to correlate with the diet composition of the different size classes for each species. a total of 210 fishes (trachinotus carolinus - 122, menticirrhus littoralis - 88), ranging between 24.2 mm and 112 mm total length, were analyzed, but the stomachs of only 84.8% of them contained food. trachinotus carolinus presented mysids, polychaetes and emerita spp. as the predominant items in their diet. formicidae and isopoda were the most important items for class i individuals, whereas mysids and emerita spp. were important for classes ii and iii. class i individuals also showed smaller sized prey (amphipods and isopods) and clupeid fish larvae in their diet. emerita spp. dominated the food items of menticirrhus littoralis regardless of the size class. polychaetes, the second most important item was better represented in class sizes ii and iii. the main morphometric variable correlated with such differences included mouth position and diameter of the eye.
Energia estática sobre o norte e nordeste do Brasil relacionada com a temperatura da superfície do mar

Abstract: some aspects of the large scale atmospheric general circulation, in the north and northeast brazil, which are related to the sea surface temperature (tsm) of the tropical atlantic and pacific oceans were investigated from the apparent heat source and the humidity sink. were utilized the monthly data variables temperature, specific humidity, zonal and meridional wind components and geopotential height from national centers for environment prediction/national center for atmospheric research (ncep/ncar). the used data are spaced in a grating of 2.5°x 2.5° latitude and longitude, for the standard levels from 925 to 100 hpa. besides, the used are tsm data from a 2° x 2° latitude and longitude grid. four episodes of enso and four of dipole pattern were selected. the study refers to the rainy quarter period of february to april. during the warm (cold) episodes of el ni?o and positive dipole (la ni?a and negative dipole) the atmosphere over the areas 1 and 2 (1-noth and 2- northeast of brazil) were less (more) humid. the observed above (below) mean variations in the dry static energy were more stronger during the el ni?o (la ni?a) years when compared to the years of positive dipole (negative dipole). smaller (larger) areas of convergence of dry static energy in the lower levels and divergence in the upper levels during the years of el ni?o (la ni?a) were encountered. during the positive (negative) dipole phases the convergence band of static energy over the atlantic ocean was observed more towards north (south). the amazon region behaved as an apparent water vapor sink during the episodes of el ni?o, la ni?a and dipoles positive and negative. the northeast brazil region behaved as an apparent water vapor source during the episodes of el ni?o and positive dipole years and as a sink during the episodes of la ni?a and negative dipole year.
Efeito do detalhamento dos ventos na modelagem de agita??o marítima no oeste do Atlantico Sul

Abstract: this work carried out numerical simulations of gravity waves of the sea surface using the model wavewatch-iii version 1.18 over the atlantic in order to evaluate the importance of detailing wind features for different sea conditions. the chosen area was delimited by parallels 18 o s and 45 o s and the meridian 35o w and 70o w, so that the center of the grid was over the rs coast. for each event, wind fields from the rams mesoscale model (grid of 0.34o x 0.284o and hourly output time) and from the ncep global model (grid of 2.5o x 2.5o and temporal output every 6 hours) were inserted into the ww3 model in order to verify the influence of scales in the generation of sea surface waves. it was noted that in extreme events, the simulations overestimated the heights of the waves. comparing to the observed in situ wind fields, it was also noticed that the integrations powered by ncep reanalysis data showed more discrepant results than the integrations from the rams model. the more precise behavior when using rams data points out the importance of mesoscale phenomena for the generation of wave trains, which propagate in groups. during calm wind events, the wave heights were underestimated, raising two lines of action: the first is to extend the chosen domain, because this pattern seems to be associated with waves generated in a far remote region and the second is to start the ww3 with a more realistic wave field.

Abstract: In order to determine the energy needed to artificially dry a product, the latent heat of vaporization of moisture in the product, hfg, must be known. Generally, the expressions for hfg reported in the literature are of the form hfg = h(T)f(M), where h(T) is the latent heat of vaporization of free water, and f(M) is a function of the equilibrium moisture content, M. But expressions of this type contain a simplification because, in this case, the ratio hfg/h would only depend to the moisture content. In this article a more general expression for the latent heat of vaporization, namely hfg = g(M,T), is used to determine hfg for banana. To this end, a computer program was developed which fits automatically about 500 functions, with one or two independent variables, imbedded in its library to experimental data. The program uses nonlinear regression, and classifies the best functions according to the least reduced chi-square. A set of executed statistical tests shows that the generalized expression used in this work given by hfg = g(M,T) produces better results of hfg for bananas than other equations found in the literature.
