Abstract: farms raising ostriches are becoming popular in brazil lately, but as an exotic species, there is little information regarding diseases that affect these animals in our environment. a five-month-old ostrich had cough, anorexia, weight loss, mild dispneia, normal body temperature, and died within 8 days from the beginning of the clinical signs. grossly, there were multiple nodules in the lung and air sacs. histopathologically, a multifocal necrotizing and granulomatous pneumonia with intralesional radiating septated and branching hyphae with morphological features of aspergillus sp. was observed. in the air sacs, in addition to the hyphae and adjacent inflammatory reaction, there were multiple mycelia with conidiophores on the inner surface. aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the affected tissues. based on the histopathological and mycological findings, a severe mycotic pneumonia and air sacculitis caused by aspergillus fumigatus was diagnosed. to the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of aspergillosis in an ostrich in brazil.

Abstract: Criatórios de avestruz têm se tornado comuns no Brasil, mas por se tratar de espécie exótica, as informa es sobre as doen as desses animais no nosso ambiente s o escassas.

Abstract: infectious abortion is a significant cause of reproductive failure and economic losses in cattle. the goal of this study was to detect nucleic acids of several infectious agents known to cause abortion including arcanobacterium pyogenes, bovine herpesvirus 1, brucella abortus, campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis, chlamydophila abortus, leptospira sp., listeria monocytogenes, salmonella sp., mycoplasma bovis, mycoplasma bovigenitalium, neospora caninum, and tritrichomonas foetus. tissue homogenates from 42 fetuses and paraffin-embedded tissues from 28 fetuses and 14 placentas/endometrium were included in this study. brucella abortus was detected in 14.2% (12/84) of the samples. salmonella sp. dna was amplified from 2 fetuses, and there was one positive for neospora caninum, and another for listeria monocytogenes. this pcr-based approach resulted in identification of the etiology in 19% of samples, or 20% if considered fetal tissues only.
The genus Brucella and clinical manifestations of brucellosis

Ciência Rural , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782009005000167
Abstract: infection with bacteria of the genus brucella results in major economic and political impact by causing reproductive diseases in a significant number of domestic animal species. moreover, it has a great social significance, since many species are capable of causing human infection, with severe consequences. dissemination of knowledge on a specific disease is an essential step for its control. considering that brucellosis is still the most prevalent zoonosis in the world, information about taxonomy, clinical signs in domestic animals and humans are crucial for attempting to reduce the prevalence of this disease. the recent isolation and characterization of non-classical species of brucella indicates that a lot remains to be discovered about this genus. nevertheless, due to the social-economic importance of brucellosis, this review aims to clarify points related to taxonomy of the genus and describe the clinical relevance of infection in humans and domestic animals.

Abstract: St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is a causative agent of encephalitis in humans in the Western hemisphere. SLEV is a positive-sense RNA virus that belongs to the Flavivirus genus, which includes West Nile encephalitis virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, Dengue virus and other medically important viruses. Recently, we isolated a SLEV strain from the brain of a horse with neurological signs in the countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The SLEV isolation was confirmed by reverse-transcription RT-PCR and sequencing of the E protein gene. Virus identity was also confirmed by indirect immunofluorescence using commercial antibodies against SLEV. To characterize this newly isolated strain in vivo, serial passages in newborn mice were performed and led to hemorrhagic manifestations associated with recruitment of inflammatory cells into the central nervous system of newborns. In summary this is the first isolation of SLEV from a horse with neurological signs in Brazil.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the occupational accidents mortality on the Southwest of Bahia State, Brazil, from 1997 to 2006. It’s a descriptive study with database records about fatal occupational accidents on Information Mortality System. Sociodemographic and work variables were evaluated. There were an increasing trend of fatal occupational accidents in Vitoria da Conquista (64,91%) and Jequie (13,16%) cities. Men had more accidents than women. These injuries were also common among those who studied for 4 to 7 years and who were pardo. More studies will be needed to quantify the real occupational accidents rates in each Bahia State’s Regions and identify its pecculiarites.

Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2018.82011
Abstract:

The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge that nurses in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) of a public birth center had about the use of the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) and to test how their scoring for NIPS changed before and after training. Thirty nurses applied the NIPS scale to newborns that were procedures considered painful. During the first and second evaluations, nurses diagnosed 30% infants as having pain and 70% infants as having an absence of pain. In the third and fourth evaluations, after the NIPS parameters had been explained, we observed an increase in the number of infants diagnosed with the presence of pain (65%). The results indicate the importance of formal training for the systemic evaluation of pain in newborns.

Abstract: Delivery of microbial products into the mammalian cell cytosol by bacterial secretion systems is a strong stimulus for triggering pro-inflammatory host responses. Here we show that Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), the causative agent of typhoid fever, tightly regulates expression of the invasion-associated type III secretion system (T3SS-1) and thus fails to activate these innate immune signaling pathways. The S. Typhi regulatory protein TviA rapidly repressed T3SS-1 expression, thereby preventing RAC1-dependent, RIP2-dependent activation of NF-κB in epithelial cells. Heterologous expression of TviA in S. enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) suppressed T3SS-1-dependent inflammatory responses generated early after infection in animal models of gastroenteritis. These results suggest that S. Typhi reduces intestinal inflammation by limiting the induction of pathogen-induced processes through regulation of virulence gene expression.

Abstract: the objectives of this study were: to quantify the wood stock for coal production and for sawmill in an eucalypt stand;) to quantify the carbon stock in the various compartments of the forest; and to evaluate economically management alternatives in order to include forest stands in the clean development mechanism and in the sale of the carbon credits. in order to do so, a forest inventory in a 6-year-old plantation of eucalyptus grandis, located in vi?osa, minas gerais state, brazil, was carried out. the analysis showed that: a) the stem is a tree component that contributes the most, in average, for total carbon of the aerial part (81.84%), followed by the bark (8.05%), branches (7.74%), and leaves (2.57%); b) 47.7 tons of the carbon per hectare are stocked in the aerial parts of the trees; 14.71 tons in the roots; and 8.72 tons in the organic litter; totaling 71.13 tons of carbon per hectare; c) the wood production for the sale of carbon credits only, without considering its final use, is economically feasible, according to quantitative criteria of the project evaluation, if the ton of carbon was commercialized at prices higher than us$ 10.07; d) the sale of the carbon credits makes the activity even more attractive economically, mainly because the income enters at the beginning of the project.
