Efectos de la ingesta de maíz de alta calidad de proteína (QPM) versus maíz convencional en el crecimiento y la morbilidad de ni?os nicaragüenses desnutridos de 1 a 5 a?os de edad

Abstract: quality protein maize (qpm), with twice the amount of tryptophan and lysine than conventional maize, has improved the nutritional status of severely malnourished children. this double-blind clinical study evaluated the impact of qpm on the growth and morbidity of mild and moderately malnourished children. in a nicaraguan day care center, 48 children 1 to 5 years old who were malnourished (> 2 indicators with <-1 z for weight-age, height-age or weight-height) were identified and randomly assigned to consume for 5 days/week for 3.5 months a snack prepared with qpm or conventional maize. qpm positively influenced children?s growth: weight (0.80 vs. 0.19 kg gained from baseline to endline between the qpm and conventional maize groups, respectively), height (2.02 vs. 1.23 cm in qpm vs. conventional) and z score for weight-age (0.17 vs. -0.26 z in qpm vs. conventional) and height-age (0.06 vs. -0.23 z in qpm vs. conventional). when other factors that could affect growth with respect to weight, height, weight-age z score and height-age z score were controlled for, the intervention group (qpm>conventional) was a statistically important factor (p<0.01). the qpm snack, however, had no effect on the incidence of diarrheal episodes or respiratory infections. in conclusion, qpm improves the nutritional status of pre-school children who are mild or moderately malnourished but has no effect on the incidence of diarrheal episodes or respiratory infections.
EXPLORANDO LA METACOGNICIóN: EVIDENCIA EN ACTIVIDADES DE LECTURA Y ESCRITURA EN NI OS Y NI AS DE 5 A 10 A OS DE EDAD

Abstract: Este estudio se interesó por la evaluación de las operaciones metacognitivas de planeación, autorregulación y evaluación implicadas en los procesos de lectura y escritura presentadas por ni os de los grados transición a quinto de primaria. Se tomó una población de 36 ni os con un desarrollo del lenguaje acorde a la edad cronológica (18 ni as y 18 ni os) con edades comprendidas entre 5 y 10 a os de edad, pertenecientes a una misma institución educativa de estrato socio-económico tres. Las variables que los instrumentos permitían evaluar eran: metacognición en lectura y escritura, comprensión lectora y producción escrita. Además se contrastaban estas variables con el género y el grado escolar al cual pertenecían los ni os. Los hallazgos más significativos con base en los datos obtenidos sobre los desempe os de los individuos en los diferentes aspectos de las tareas fueron: (a) la muestra se distribuyó en todos los niveles, mostrando diferencias en las cuatro variables; (b) se encontró una relación directa y significativa entre las cuatro variables evaluadas por los instrumentos; y (c) como se esperaba, se encontró una diferencia de las variables al comparar la ejecución entre los diversos grados escolares. Por otro lado, se halló una baja significación en la asociación entre el género y las otras variables del estudio.

Abstract: objective: acomplete a sensory evaluation of orange-fleshed sweet potato (ofsp) clone 440189. materials and methods: a descriptive study was undertaken with a convenience sample of 290 nicaraguan school-age children attending grades 3 to 6, who taste-tested a ''sweet potato cake'' recipe. snack a had sweet potato leaves added to it; snack b did not. first, 33 mothers opined about the snacks. then, children tested snacks a and b, assigning a value of 1 to 5 (from ''i don′t like it very much'' to ''i like it very much'') to each and indicating which snack they preferred. results: most of the women gave a positive evaluation to the snacks in terms of ease of preparation, time required, access to ingredients, probability that the children would accept them, and possibility of including them in the school menu. acceptability scores assigned by the children were high (mean ± sd of 4,5 + 0,7) and similar between the snacks (p=0,91). fifty one percent preferred snack a and 49% preferred snack b (p=0,56). conclusions: both snacks were accepted by the mothers and children suggesting that it is feasible to include ofsp clone 440189 into nicaraguan school children′s meals.
Fíbulas de codo “tipo Huelva” en la Península Ibérica: nuevos datos y comentarios historiográficos

Abstract: In this paper, a new find of an elbow fibula, the socalled Huelva type located in the Galicia region will be discussed. In order to carry out the study of this piece, we have analyzed other fibulae documented at Cerro de los Infantes (Pinos Puente, Granada, Spain), which make up one of the most important fibulae assemblages of the Iberian Peninsula. Several aspects, such us their typology and their chronology, as well as their relationship with other types of fibulae from the Mediterranean area, confirm the native origin of this new fibula. Una nueva fíbula de codo “tipo Huelva” localizada en la región gallega será nuestro objeto de discusión en este trabajo. Para su estudio, analizaremos otras piezas similares localizadas en el entorno del Cerro de los Infantes (Pinos Puente, Granada) que, junto a las ya conocidas, conforman uno de los grupos fibulares más importantes de la Península Ibérica. Discutiremos su tipología y cronología, así como su relación con otros tipos similares del ámbito mediterráneo, comprobándose nuevamente su carácter autóctono.

Abstract: The article examines Enrique Dussel’s critique of the traditional historiography of philosophy and of the hegemonic, Eurocentric view of modernity, both of which have served to conceal the participation of other peoples in the constitution of Europe. This critique makes possible a new understanding of the present, in which European philosophy can enter into dialogue with other philosophical traditions in order to build what Dussel calls a “philosophical transmodernity”. This is precisely the critical objective pursued in France by Michel Onfray.

Abstract: the educational institutions and their members have a particular perception of rural development. this vision can be conditioned by personal experience and also by the formation that is offered. this article identifies the conceptions of rural development taking as base the ideas of students of agronomy faculty, national university of colombia. in order to identify the current vision that exists on the concept of rural development and the particular perspective for colombia, an inquiry was applied to students of different semesters. the obtained information allowed us to appreciate a particular vision of young people about the rural development. from the results obtained, the ideas of students are verified at different moments of their formation process, comparing aspects as the perception of the development type, form of obtaining it, and leadership of the process. equally, an inquiry was made if one could reach a sector development in a certain time.
Plan Colombia: Exploring Some Myths And Effects On Colombian Foreign Policy 1998-2006

Abstract: the internationalization of colombian conflict with the setting up of plan colombia by andrés pastrana, then maintained by álvaro uribe, increased foreign policy fragmentation and confusion in the conduct of the country's foreign relations. three arguments are analyzed: first, plan colombia intensified the presidential conduct of diplomatic relations and the fragmentation of foreign relations, and made the role of the foreign ministry weaker than before. second, plan colombia made relations with usa more complex and diminished and to some extent worsened colombia's relations with the european union and most of its members. and finally, plan colombia stimulated the international participation of non-state actors, especially non-government organizations, who started to do a parallel diplomacy in washington and in brussels. the presidency of andrés pastrana and the first presidency of álvaro uribe will be examined within the geographic triangle of colombia, the usa and europe.

Virginia Gutiérrez de Pineda y su aporte al estudio histórico de la familia en Colombia

Abstract: En este ensayo proponemos escudri ar lo más relevante de la obra de Do a Virginia Gutierrez de Pineda y analizar los aportes que a través de su larga trayectoria investigativa y académica fue realizando sobre la cambiante y dinámica institución familiar. Se busca conocer la utilización que ella hacía de la historia, la forma como la trabaja y los aportes realizados. Como punto de partida se hace una aproximación a la formación académica que ella recibió y la cual ayuda a entender su forma de trabajo, sus concepciones metodológicas y teóricas, además de su compromiso con la realidad del país. Sus aportes a la historia de la familia se pueden analizar desde dos vertientes diferentes: por una parte ella incursionó directamente en lo que podríamos llamar “historia de la familia” al plantearse como objetivo el recobrar las realidades de épocas pasadas mediante el uso de testimonios escritos, pero por otra parte, sus análisis sobre la familia del siglo XX, mediante la utilización de métodos eminentemente antropológicos o sociológicos, se convierten en textos de consulta obligatoria para cualquier estudioso de la historia colombiana del siglo XX y de manera especifi ca de la institución familiar. Abstract With this essay it is our intend to examine the most signifi cant information of the work of Dona Virginia Virginia Gutierrez de Pineda as well as to analyze the contributions that throughout it’s extensive research and academic path she has provided towards the dynamic and constantly evolving familiar institution. We anticipate to investigate her application of history, the way in which she works it and the contributions that she made. As a starting point we make an approximation to the academic formation she received, which aids in understanding her way of working, her methodological and theorical conceptions in addition to her compromise with the country’s reality. Her contributions to the family history can be analyzed from two different variants: on one hand she dived in what can be called “the family history”, while having as an objective to recover the realities of past times through the use of written testimonies. On the other hand her in-depth analysis of the family 20th century, through the application of highly esteemed anthropological or sociological methods, which become into essential texts for any scholar of the Colombian history of the 20th century and more specifi cally of the familiar institution.
