Bayesian test of significance for conditional independence: The multinomial model
Pablo de Morais Andrade,Julio Michael Stern,Carlos Alberto de Bragan?a Pereira
Statistics , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/e16031376
Abstract: Conditional independence tests (CI tests) have received special attention lately in Machine Learning and Computational Intelligence related literature as an important indicator of the relationship among the variables used by their models. In the field of Probabilistic Graphical Models (PGM)--which includes Bayesian Networks (BN) models--CI tests are especially important for the task of learning the PGM structure from data. In this paper, we propose the Full Bayesian Significance Test (FBST) for tests of conditional independence for discrete datasets. FBST is a powerful Bayesian test for precise hypothesis, as an alternative to frequentist's significance tests (characterized by the calculation of the \emph{p-value}).

The effect of water-level fluctuations on swamp forest colonization by seedlings of Tabebuia cassinoides DC. (Bignoniaceae)  [PDF]
Pablo José Francisco Pena Rodrigues, Mariana de Andrade Iguatemy
Open Journal of Ecology (OJE) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/oje.2011.13008
Abstract: Establishment of Tabebuia cassinoides seedlings is related to water-level fluctuations in southeastern Brazil swamp forests. Nine years of annual monitoring of 48 individuals established during a drought in November 1997, when the swamp was unflooded, suggested that their establishment depends on this unpredictable event. This conclusion is further sustained by the wide variability of the seedling cohort size structure, and the fascicular root conformation that holds the shoots erect.
Espa?o e distin??o social: o catolicismo na Província de Sergipe
Andrade Júnior, Péricles Morais de;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742010000100007
Abstract: this article aims to analyze the social distinctions incorporated in the catholicism in the province of sergipe del rey during the nineteenth century. the analysis will be centered in the criteria of admission of two active religious brotherhoods in the city of estancia in sergipe, brazil. the research shows that there was a population divided between the brotherhoods of the blessed sacrament and our lady of the rosary, reflections of a more diversified social hierarchy about the criteria of race, wealth and social prestige. the space presented meanings in so far as the city reproduced, symbolically, the society and its organization in social strata. in other words, we notice that the catholic religious field in the population of estancia followed the mechanisms of expression of the segregation and presented itself as representative of the oppositions between the social groups, which were characterized by associations which defined the social position and the tastes of their members.

Revista Brasileira em Promo??o da Saúde , 2009,
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the level of knowledge of two principals and four teachers of public schools from a city in Ceará, concerning the Occupational Therapy in the process of school inclusion, showing the level of formation of these professionals regarding inclusive education. Method: A field research, with a qualitative interventionist approach, using the comparative method. Interviews were carried out as well as interventions by means of lectures and group dynamics dealing with subjects referring to Occupational Therapy in inclusive education. The data were evaluated by the technique of content analysis. Results: The results showed that, after the accomplishment of all interventions, the participants begun to know and to identify the profession, mainly its actions in the field of inclusive education. We point out the need of improvement as well as of specialization for the subjects, since they do not receive enough qualification to act in this new area of inclusive education. Conclusion: In the studied sample, the subjects know the process of school inclusion; however they neither have profound knowledge in the area nor the formation for inclusive practice.

Revista Mal-estar e Subjetividade , 2009,
Abstract: The text involves a subject discussed throughout the western world: the demand of all male homosexual for recognition of the legal legitimacy of their relationship and the corresponding family unit starting with adoption and assisted procreation. Such demands change social bonds, inciting discomfort for touching symbolic structures so far safeguarded; such as the sexual differences in the marriage, in the parental figures and the sexual reproduction. Despite this, it is observed that society has been accepting and listening to male homosexuals, which did not happened half a century ago, when these individuals lived stigmatised in society's margin. It is discussed here, from a formalised psychoanalytic viewpoint, some factors that made this acceptance possible. Freud is cited, but, the main emphasis is in Lacan's teaching and in his contemporaries. Hypermodernity, the definition of our time, is here put into context. It identifies the social reality where "the other" does not exist. In other words, there is the observed decline and pluralisation of the Name-of-the-Father and of its consistent ideals that guided Western civilisation. The Father, that in the formula of intercourse represents the 'Other Whole' declined, revealing its inexistence, its resemblance, its fiction. It took over the 'Other Non- Whole', unlimited and inconsistent, representing the female formula of the intercourse. The predominance of the non-whole made more flexible the rigid morals and opened a field for the recognition and acceptance of diversity, making possible the emergence of the demands of male homosexuals. Identified this discourse and the mode of enjoyment in which the discursive coordinates of science and capitalism predominate, commanding subjects to hunt for more enjoyment. The imperative that everyone has the right and duty of being happy and enjoy the resources that science has to offer made the family a desired and consumed object, contributing to the production of the referred demands.
Enhanced Flow in Small-World Networks
Cláudio L. N. Oliveira,Pablo A. Morais,André A. Moreira,José S. Andrade Jr
Computer Science , 2013, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.112.148701
Abstract: The small-world property is known to have a profound effect on the navigation efficiency of complex networks [J. M. Kleinberg, Nature 406, 845 (2000)]. Accordingly, the proper addition of shortcuts to a regular substrate can lead to the formation of a highly efficient structure for information propagation. Here we show that enhanced flow properties can also be observed in these complex topologies. Precisely, our model is a network built from an underlying regular lattice over which long-range connections are randomly added according to the probability, $P_{ij}\sim r_{ij}^{-\alpha}$, where $r_{ij}$ is the Manhattan distance between nodes $i$ and $j$, and the exponent $\alpha$ is a controlling parameter. The mean two-point global conductance of the system is computed by considering that each link has a local conductance given by $g_{ij}\propto r_{ij}^{-\delta}$, where $\delta$ determines the extent of the geographical limitations (costs) on the long-range connections. Our results show that the best flow conditions are obtained for $\delta=0$ with $\alpha=0$, while for $\delta \gg 1$ the overall conductance always increases with $\alpha$. For $\delta\approx 1$, $\alpha=d$ becomes the optimal exponent, where $d$ is the topological dimension of the substrate. Interestingly, this exponent is identical to the one obtained for optimal navigation in small-world networks using decentralized algorithms.

Acta Botanica Brasilica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33062010000200026
Abstract: modern ways of life in urban communities have altered the use and popular transmission of knowledge about medicinal plants. this study evaluated the changes induced by training in medicinal plants in a group of female residents of the urban community of muribeca (jaboat?o do guararapes, pernambuco), comparing them with other community members who have traditionally acquired knowledge. semi-structured interviews were employed. informant consensus factor (fic) and relative importance (ri) of each species cited by the two groups were calculated. informants trained in use and manipulation cited 70 species, of which petiveria alliacea l. (2.0) and ocimum selloi benth. (1.6) showed higher ri; therapeutic indications with the greatest consensus among informants were: infectious diseases (1.0), diseases of the endocrine glands, nutrition and metabolism (0.9), and of skeletal, muscle, and connective tissue (0.89). untrained informants cited 55 species, with higher values of ri for cymbopogon citratus (dc) stapf (2.0), lippia alba (mill.) n.e. br. (2.0), and mentha x villosa huds. (1.8); parasitic diseases (1.0), disorders of the nervous system (0.79), and gastrointestinal system (0.72) were therapeutic indications with the greatest fic. plants cited are similar, but training influenced species relative importance and therapeutic use indications.
