Economia e Sociedade , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182011000300006
Abstract: basing on the literature review and on published dataset and following the time chronology of the events since the portuguese colonization, this paper analyzes the stages of amazonian region development and its impacts on deforestation, highlighting the policies addressing to foster the amazon's development and the current stage of economic activities. the population growth and the economic activities, pointed out as the main causes of the amazonian deforestation and stimulated by economic policies, have been unequally developed inside the amazonian region, generating the unequal deforestation process among the amazonian states and inside each state.
Prates, Rodolfo Coelho;Bacha, Carlos José Caetano;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032010000100008
Abstract: this paper analyses the empirical relationship between amazonian rainforest deforestation and local population welfare, measuring the impact on welfare if the deforestation area has to be reduced. the municipal human development index (mhdi) was used to measure welfare. using 1995 agriculture census dataset, a cobb-douglas production function was estimated considering three production inputs: capital, land and labor. applying a nonlinear programming method (kuhn-tucker conditions) on the results generated by the production function, the impacts of land constraints on agriculture and agribusiness incomes could be calculated, generating a new value of income for each amazonian state. combining new values of income with education and health indexes, a new mhdi was estimated for some amazonian states. results point out mhdi would have small reductions, despite significant reductions in some states income, if some restrains would be established on arable land use.

International Journal of Morphology , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-95022004000400005
Abstract: chordae tendineae architecture and their junction with papillary muscle were studied with scanning electron microscopy, comparing human and swine hearts. papillary muscles with the corresponding chordae tendineae were obtained from human and pig (sus scrofa) hearts after exposition of the left ventricle cavity, fixed with 4% formaldehyde. the specimens were sectioned in small samples and divided in four groups, a control one and the others submitted to digestion in a solution of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite in saline solution during 5, 10 and 15 minutes respectively. the specimens were washed and fixed in 1% osmium tetroxide in cacodylate buffer, kept in 1% tannic acid for 30 minutes, dehydrated and critical point dried, mounted and sputtered with gold. the specimens were examined and documented in a jeol 5200 scanning electron microscope. the human and swine chordae tendineae have similar architecture: both are covered by the endothelium which was in continuity with the papillary muscles, the inner layers are composed by longitudinal and oblique collagen bundles intermingled with elastic fibers. differences between swine and human hearts were found in the chordae tendineae - papillary muscle junction. in the human heart the collagen bundles showed a more organized arrangement, forming a meshwork with the fibers disposed in approximately orthogonal angles, whereas in the swine heart the fibers were randomly disposed

SUMMARY: The purpose of this study was contribute with more anatomical details about the palmar metacarpal arteries (PMA), which are originated in the deep palmar arch. We studied these arteries in 60 hands from 30 cadavers of adult brazilian individuals, of both sexes. The cadavers belong to the Universidade Federal de S o Paulo, Brazil. The hand arteries were injected with red stained latex neoprene. We found 4 PMA in 38 cases (63.3%), 3 PMA in 12 (20%), 5 PMA in 7 (11.7%). The PMA anastomosed with the common or proper palmar digital arteries in 38.5%. The second PMA formed partial or totally to the palmar digital arteries in 42 cases (45.7 % or 17.6% of the total arteries). This PMA corresponded to the radialis indicis artery in 16 cases (26.7% of the studied hands). In 83.3% of the hands, one or various PMA participated in the formation of the palmar digital arteries. The PMA supply mainly the deep palmar region but also they are very important in the formation of the palmar digital arteries, which irrigate the superficial region.
