ESPINOSA H.,PATRICIA;
Acta literaria , 2005, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-68482005000200002
Abstract: maría luisa bombal?s (1910-1930) la última niebla, first published in 1934, is not devoid of socio-political criticism. it fits into the category of novels which present unfulfilled female worlds. the unveiling of a private sphere in crisis makes possible the unfolding of a conscience; this in turn gives shape to a world detached from reality. this is a phenomenon which appears with great force in the narrative of chilean bourgeoisie women at the turn of the 20th century. in the case of bombal, it will acquire traits which are particularly confrontational, due -to great extent- to the irruption of eroticism as a constituent element of intimacy

Abstract: 2666, roberto bola?o′s last novel consists of five parts that may be read in an independent way, separately or interconnected -not necessarily in a linear way- in terms of group. each part refers to santa teresa, a bordering mexican city, where assassination of women are committed. each part also refers to the writer disappearence, the evil and the secret as topics. the novel proposes infinite clues the reader must follow in search of his origin, which are always false in its origin. he plays with the metaphysical tradition of the ungraspable, the secret inside the writing, the unreachable aura, with our desperate anxiety of references

Secreto y simulacro en 2666 de Roberto Bola o Secret and simulacrum in Roberto Bola o's 2666

The impact of a clinical training unit on integrated child health care in Mexico

Bulletin of the World Health Organization , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0042-96862001000500010
Abstract: this study had two aims: to describe the activities of a clinical training unit set up for the integrated management of sick children, and to evaluate the impact of the unit after its first four years of operation. the training unit was set up in the outpatient ward of a government hospital and was staffed by a paediatrician, a family medicine physician, two nurses and a nutritionist. the staff kept a computerized database for all patients seen and they were supervised once a month. during the first three years, the demand for first-time medical consultation increased by 477% for acute respiratory infections (ari) and 134% for acute diarrhoea (ad), with an average annual increase of demand for medical care of 125%. eighty-nine per cent of mothers who took their child for consultation and 85% of mothers who lived in the catchment area and had a deceased child received training on how to recognize alarming signs in a sick child. fifty-eight per cent of these mothers were evaluated as being properly trained. eighty-five per cent of primary care physicians who worked for government institutions (n = 350) and 45% of private physicians (n = 90) were also trained in the recognition and proper management of ad and ari. ari mortality in children under 1 year of age in the catchment area (which included about 25 000 children under 5 years of age) decreased by 43.2% in three years, while mortality in children under 5 years of age decreased by 38.8%. the corresponding figures for ad mortality reduction were 36.3% and 33.6%. in this same period, 11 clinical research protocols were written. in summary, we learned that a clinical training unit for integrated child care management was an excellent way to offer in-service training for primary health care physicians.

Abstract: in epidemiology, it is necessary that exposure indicators have good validity in order to obtain valid results when measuring the risks associated with occupational exposure to environmental noxious agents. however, ensuring the validity of past exposure data is no easy task. because there are no environmental hygiene measures or representative levels of bioindicators signaling past exposure, self-reports have been used as a source of indirect exposure data. unfortunately, data on specific agents are commonly poor and need to be complemented with data on the determinants of exposure. the validity of self-reports improves when certain techniques, such as control lists and icons, are employed, and the quality of individual exposure data improves when secondary data on exposure and its conditioning or determining factors are incorporated. exposure can be determined by means of exposure matrices, assessment by experts, and exposure models, and by using a combination of primary and secondary data on exposure and its conditioning factors. matrices contain pooled data and can thus lead to errors in classifying individual exposure and to biased risk estimates. assessment by experts is probably the method with the highest validity, but it can become expensive when studies are large. it is also feasible to use a formal model for assessing perceivable exposures, complemented with expert assessments whenever the results of the model appear to deviate from reality.

Zamora Morales,Bertha Patricia; Sánchez García,Prometeo; Volke Haller,Víctor H.; Espinosa Victoria,David; Galvis Spínola,Arturo;
Interciencia , 2005,
Abstract: the purpose of the present study was to formulate substrate mixtures through lineal programming, using the physical and chemical properties of seven organic and inorganic substrates: tezontle, agrolita, peat-mossa, vermicompost from kitchen waste, compost of goat manure and straw, vermicompost of agave residues and germinase (coconut fiber), using the software blp88. design variables were established (volume balance, organic matter, total porous space and field capacity) and final values for each mixture to be designed (restrictions) were also set. the object function was to minimize costs in terms of three levels of restriction value for each of the variables designed. feasible mixtures were obtained from the combination of design variables. lineal programming reduced the number of feasible mixtures by 93%. in order to evaluate the design criteria, 25% of the feasible mixtures were selected, which were reconstructed with the defined proportions of each original material. the results indicated that the values for each one of the variables evaluated were within the pre-established limits. thus, lineal programming can be use as a reliable method for substrate mixture formulation.
