Neurodegenerative changes in different regions of brain, spinal cord and sciatic nerve of rats treated with sodium fluoride

Abstract: Fluoride is known to cross the blood-brain barrier and alter the structure and function of neural tissue. There are few authoritative reports on neurodegenerative changes in hippocampus, neocortex, cerebellum, spinal cord and sciatic nerve in fluoride intoxication. We report the alterations in the structure of neuronal tissue after chronic administration of sodium fluoride (for 60days) to rats. Twelve male Wistar rats were divided equally into two groups: one group received 20 ppm of sodium fluoride (NaF) and the other group (which served as a control) received tap water for 60days.The body weights and organic somatic index of brain in the sodium fluoride treated animals were significantly reduced, relative to the control group. Tissue fluoride levels of hippocampus, neocortex, cerebellum, spinal cord and sciatic nerve, all increased significantly in fluoride treated rats. Electron microscopy of the hippocampus, neocortex, cerebellum, spinal cord and sciatic nerve showed neurodegenerative changes in the NaF treated group compared to controls. Axon deterioration, myelin sheath degeneration and dark cells with scanty cytoplasm were observed in spinal cord and sciatic nerve in the treated group. Other distinctive morphological alterations observed were: vacuolated swollen mitochondria in neocortex, hippocampus and cerebellum; myelinated fibers with breaks in continuity (axon partly preserved and partly vacuolated) in hippocampus; myelin splitting and vacuolated schwann cell within the cerebellum and sciatic nerve respectively. Thus, neurodegeneration was clearly evident in the hippocampus, neocortex, cerebellum, spinal cord and sciatic nerve on fluoride exposure.
An Enhanced Railway Transport System using FPGA through GPS & GSM

Abstract: Travel time information is a vital component of manyintelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications. In recentyears, the number of passengers travels in train & number of trainsin India has increased tremendously. Due to the increase innumber of trains the train times may be delayed and the passengershave to wait at railway stations. A desirable strategy to deal withsuch issues is to provide better service (comfort, convenience and soon) the notification of location of time through GSM. One suchapplication provides accurate information about train arrivals topassengers, leading to reduced waiting times at railway stations.This needs a real-time data collection technique, a quick andreliable data and informing the passengers regarding the same. Thescope of this proposed system is to use global positioning systemdata collected from trains in the city in India, to show the location.The system consists of three modules: Vehicle section Module,BASE Station section Module, User mobile section Module.Equipped with PC and GSM modem, BASE Station Module sendsthe initialization information containing the train number toVehicle section Module using SMS. The microcontroller basedvehicle section Module consisting mainly of a GPS receiver andGSM modem then starts transmitting its location to BASE StationModule. BASE Station Module equipped with a microcontrollerunit and GSM modems interfaced to PCs is designed to keep trackrecord of every train, processes user request about a particulartrain location out of BASE Station and updates trains location atstations. GPS Module is installed at every station and consists of aGSM modem, memory unit and dot matrix display all interfaced toa microcontroller. This module receives trains location informationcoming towards that station from BASE Station module anddisplays the information on a dot matrix display. The performanceof the proposed system is found to be promising and expected to bevaluable in the development of advanced public transportationsystems (APTS) in India. The work presented here is one of the firstattempts at real-time short-term prediction of arrival time for ITSapplications in India.
Optimization of medium constituents for Cephalosporin C production using response surface methodology and artificial neural networks

Abstract: Artificial neural networks (ANN) and response surface methodology(RSM) were used to build a model to describe the effects of fourindependent variables (moisture content, concentrations of glucose,ammonium nitrate and methionine) on the yield of cephalosporin C(CPC) from Acremonium chrysogenum under solid statefermentation. The respective uses of RSM and ANN were found tobe effective in locating the optimum conditions within the rangefixed from the preliminary runs. When compared with thepredictions given by RSM, ANN was found to be superior indescribing the fermentation process for the production of CPC.When a global optimization routine was employed to optimize theequation resulted from the neural networks, the optimum predictedantibiotic yield was found to be 29.4 mg/g which is 14.8 % higherthan the optimum value obtained from preliminary runs, and 9.2 %higher than value obtained from Box-Behnken design of RSM.

Abstract:

Engineers & technologists contribute significantly in our social development, economic progress, and enhancement of social and physical infrastructure. Industry in general and manufacturing in particular are facing unprecedented challenges due to globalization. Consequently, the business environment of manufacturing enterprises is facing increasing complexity. The engineering graduates and researchers with the ability to understand the technological complexities, the creative arts and skills are increasingly sought after by industrial and business world. Team-based activities are of great importance for students to learn and tackle and solve the complex global issues at later life. Self study and own initiatives of engineering students at learning stage enable and sharpen them to emerge out as highly acceptable engineers. The Washington Accord which emphasizes on outcome based learning is gaining increasing acceptance among many countries.

Abstract: The electrical transport behavior and magnetoresistance (MR) of a polycrystalline double layered manganite La1.2Sr1.4Ba0.4Mn2O7, synthesized by the sol-gel method, are investigated in the temperature range 4.2 K - 300 K. The sample exhibits an insulator-to-metal transition at 87 K (TIM) and the spin-glass (SG)-like behavior is observed below 50 K (TSG). The transport behavior is analyzed in the entire temperature range considering three different regions: paramagnetic insulating region (T>TIM), ferromagnetic metallic region (TSG < T < TIM) and antiferromagnetic insulating region (TSG) by fitting the temperature dependent resistivity data to the equations governing the conduction process in the respective temperature regions. The results show that the conduction at T>TIM follows Mott variable range hopping (VRH) process, while the two-magnon scattering process is evidenced at TSG < T < TIM which is suppressed with the applied magnetic field of 4 T. The low temperature conductivity data are also fitted with Mott VRH equation. The sample exhibits a large MR (≈45%) over a temperature range     5 K – 50 K and it shows ≈32% MR at 5 K with a magnetic field of 0.5 T.

Abstract: This paper focused on selection of best materials for absorber tube and reflective surfaces of Solar Parabolic Collector (SPC) using fuzzy logic, after analysing the material data. The glass mirror and Aluminium absorber have been identified as best materials. These selected materials are replaced in existing experimental setup. An experimental design is prepared based on the considered parabolic collector parameters: Absorptivity, Reflectivity and Period of Sun Incidence. During experiments, outlet temperature of water and discharge is recorded for each experimental run. These data are analyzed using fuzzy Logic integrated with the Taguchi method and optimal parameter combination has been found.

Abstract: A total of 82 patients suffering from corneal ulcer were treated with framycetin 0.5%, gentamicin 3 mg./ml, chloramphenicol 0.4% and a neomycin combination containing Polymixin B sulphate 5000 u, neomycin sulphate 1700 u and gramicidin 0.025 mg/mL in a Randomised comparative study. The commonest organism isolated was Staphylococcus followed by Pneumococcus, Streptococcus and Pseudomonas. The in vitro sensitivity of these isolates to framycetin was higher than that to others Framycetin produced both earlier and a greater degree of improvement in mean score of signs and symptoms than the other antibiotics. It can thus be concluded that framycetin has a better profile of antibacterial activity and clinical efficacy than some other commonly used topical antibiotics in the treatment of corneal ulcer.
