The hybrid Eulerian Lagrangian numerical scheme tested with Chemistry

Abstract: A newly developed advection scheme, the Hybrid Eulerian Lagrangian (HEL) scheme, has been tested, including a module for atmospheric chemistry, including 58 chemical species, and compared to two other traditional advection schemes; a classical pseudospectral Eulerian method the Accurate Space Derivative (ASD) scheme and the bi-cubic semi-Lagrangian (SL) scheme using classical rotation tests. The rotation tests have been designed to test and compare the advection schemes for different spatial and temporal resolutions in different chemical conditions (rural and urban) and for different shapes (cone and slotted cylinder) giving the advection schemes different challenges with respect to relatively slow or fast chemistry and smooth or sharp gradients, respectively. In every test, error measures have been calculated and used for ranking of the advection schemes with respect to performance, i.e. lowest overall errors for all chemical species. Furthermore, the HEL and SL schemes have been compared in a shallow water model, demonstrating the performance in a more realistic non-linear deformation flow. The results in this paper show that the new advection scheme, HEL, by far outperforms both the Eulerian and semi-Lagrangian schemes with very low error estimates compared to the two other schemes. Although no analytic solution can be obtained for the performance in the non-linear shallow water model flow, the tracer distribution appears realistic as compared to LMCSL when a mixing between local parcel concentrations is introduced in HEL.
The Dilemma of Grammatical Data in Travel Dictionaries

Abstract: Abstract: Travel dictionaries are edited with a view to helping international tourists with no or very little previous knowledge of the foreign language. They aim to solve communicative problems in a number of specific situations in which tourists wish to engage in conversation. However, they also have to deal with the absence of the necessary listening and speaking skills of their users. The lexicographic information is normally twofold, as it includes a selection of relevant words and sentences as well as a selection of the grammatical rules that govern the integration of these words and sentences into tourist conversation — from words to utterances so to speak. In this article, we will focus on the selection and presentation of the grammatical data in order to investigate how they contribute to the fulfilment of their primary functions. Our thesis is that the grammatical data have to deal with a dilemma: helping tourists understand and be understood during a conversation while also helping them acquire some basic knowledge of the grammatical system of the foreign language.
Disparities in Adverse Childhood Experiences among Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Adults: Results from a Multi-State Probability-Based Sample

Abstract: Background Adverse childhood experiences (e.g., physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence, parental discord, familial mental illness, incarceration and substance abuse) constitute a major public health problem in the United States. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) scale is a standardized measure that captures multiple developmental risk factors beyond sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (i.e., sexual minority) individuals may experience disproportionately higher prevalence of adverse childhood experiences. Purpose To examine, using the ACE scale, prevalence of childhood physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and childhood household dysfunction among sexual minority and heterosexual adults. Methods Analyses were conducted using a probability-based sample of data pooled from three U.S. states’ Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys (Maine, Washington, Wisconsin) that administered the ACE scale and collected information on sexual identity (n = 22,071). Results Compared with heterosexual respondents, gay/lesbian and bisexual individuals experienced increased odds of six of eight and seven of eight adverse childhood experiences, respectively. Sexual minority persons had higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (IRR = 1.66 gay/lesbian; 1.58 bisexual) compared to their heterosexual peers. Conclusions Sexual minority individuals have increased exposure to multiple developmental risk factors beyond physical, sexual and emotional abuse. We recommend the use of the Adverse Childhood Experiences scale in future research examining health disparities among this minority population.
Andreev Bound States at the Interface of Antiferromagnets and d-wave Superconductors

Abstract: We set up a simple transfer matrix formalism to study the existence of bound states at interfaces and in junctions between antiferromagnets and d-wave superconductors. The well-studied zero energy mode at the {110} interface between an insulator and a d-wave superconductor is spin split when the insulator is an antiferromagnet. This has as a consequence that any competing interface induced superconducting order parameter that breaks the time reversal symmetry needs to exceed a critical value before a charge current is induced along the interface.
Detection of Surface Defects on Compact Discs

Abstract: Online detection of surface defects on optical discs is of high importance for the accommodation schemes handling these defects. These surface defects introduce defect components to the position measurements of focus and radial tracking positions. The respective controllers will accordingly try to suppress these defect components resulting in a wrong positioning of the optical disc drive. In this paper, two novel schemes for detecting these surface defects are introduced and compared. Both methods, which are an extended threshold scheme and a wavelet packet-based scheme, improve the detection compared with a standard threshold scheme. The extended threshold scheme detects the four tested defects with a maximal detection delay of 3 samples while the wavelet packet-based scheme has a maximal detection delay of 6 samples. Simulations of focus and radial positions in the presence of a surface defect are performed in order to inspect the importance and consequences of the size of the detection delay, from which it can be seen that focus and radial position errors increase significantly due to the defect as the detection delay increases.

Abstract: temperature sensitive strains (42oc) of aspergillus nidulans were obtaines by u.v. irradiation. the mutant alleles had not been located and among 18 thermosensitive mutants theree gave clear evidence that the determinant of thermosensitivity was caused by effects associated with the nucleus and were selected for further studies. diploids have been synthesised between normal straisn and the three latter variants eschibiting lethality at 42oc and a complete recessivity of the character in each case was shown. for comparative purposes attempts were made to find instances of "adaptation". nutritionally balanced heterokaryons, between tsl and the wild tipe strains for the corresponding alleles had show quite different results when experience on increasing initial incutation time at 37oc ant then were transfered to 41oc. heterokaryons had not showed adaptative reponse to the changes of temperature. the heterokaryon: heterozygote slight difference of behavior doubtless arose as result of dosage effects. the results reinforced and offered some confidence in heterokaryon stability under constant environmental conditions.
First evaluation of MyOcean altimetric data in the Arctic Ocean

Abstract: The MyOcean V2 preliminary (V2p) data set of weekly gridded sea level anomaly (SLA) maps from 1993 to 2009 over the Arctic region is evaluated against existing altimetric data sets and tide gauge data. Compared with DUACS V3.0.0 (Data Unification and Altimeter Combination System) data set, MyOcean V2p data set improves spatial coverage and quality as well as maximum temporal correlation coefficient between altimetry and tide gauge data. The estimated amplitude of sea level annual signal and linear sea level trend from MyOcean data set are evaluated against altimetry from DUACS and RADS (Radar Altimeter Database System), the SODA (Simple Ocean Data Assimilation) ocean reanalysis and tide gauge data sets from PSMSL (Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level). The results show that the MyOcean data set fits in-situ measurements better than DUACS data set with respect to amplitude of annual signal and linear sea level trend. However, the MyOcean V2p data set exhibits an unrealistic large linear sea level trend compared with that from other data sources.
Breakdown of universal transport in correlated d-wave superconductors

Abstract: The prediction and observation of low-temperature universal thermal conductivity in cuprates has served as a keystone of theoretical approaches to the superconducting state, but recent measurements on underdoped samples show strong violations of this apparently fundamental property of d-wave nodal quasiparticles. Here, we show that the breakdown of universality may be understood as the consequence of disorder-induced magnetic states in the presence of increasing antiferromagnetic correlations in the underdoped state, even as these same correlations protect the nodal low-energy density of states in agreement with recent scanning tunneling experiments.
Extinction of quasiparticle interference in underdoped cuprates with coexisting order

Abstract: Recent scanning tunnelling spectroscopy measurements [Y. Koksaka et al., Nature 454, 1072 (2008)] have shown that dispersing quasiparticle interference peaks in Fourier transformed conductance maps disappear as the bias voltage exceeds a certain threshold corresponding to the coincidence of the contour of constant quasiparticle energy with the antiferromagnetic zone boundary. Here we argue that this is caused by quasistatic short-range coexisting order present in the d-wave superconducting phase, and that the most likely origin of this order is disorder-induced incommensurate antiferromagnetism. We show explicitly how the peaks are extinguished in the related situation with coexisting long-range antiferromagnetic order, and discuss the connection with the realistic disordered case. Since it is the localized quasiparticle interference peaks rather than the underlying antinodal states themselves which are destroyed at a critical bias, our proposal resolves a conflict between scanning tunneling spectroscopy and photoemission regarding the nature of these states.
Shell Model for Time-correlated Random Advection of Passive Scalars

Abstract: We study a minimal shell model for the advection of a passive scalar by a Gaussian time correlated velocity field. The anomalous scaling properties of the white noise limit are studied analytically. The effect of the time correlations are investigated using perturbation theory around the white noise limit and non-perturbatively by numerical integration. The time correlation of the velocity field is seen to enhance the intermittency of the passive scalar.
