The antineutrino energy structure in reactor experiments
P. Novella
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: The recent observation of an energy structure in the reactor antineutrino spectrum is reviewed. The reactor experiments Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO have reported a consistent excess of antineutrinos deviating from the flux predictions, with a local significance of about 4$\sigma$ between 4 and 6 MeV of the positron energy spectrum. The possible causes of the structure are analyzed in this work, along with the different experimental approaches developed to identify its origin. Considering the available data and results from the three experiments, the most likely explanation concerns the reactor flux predictions and the associated uncertainties. Therefore, the different current models are described and compared. The possible sources of incompleteness or inaccuracy of such models are discussed, as well as the experimental data required to improve their precision.
Rate-Only analysis with reactor-off data in the Double Chooz experiment
P. Novella, for the Double Chooz collaboration
Physics , 2013,
Abstract: Among ongoing reactor-based experiments, Double Chooz is unique in obtaining data when the reactor cores are brought down for maintenance. These reactor-off data allow for a clean measurement of the backgrounds of the experiment, thus being of uppermost importance for the theta13 oscillation analysis. While the oscillation results published by the collaboration in 2011 and 2012 rely on background models derived from reactor-on data, in this talk we present an independent study based on the handle provided by 7.53 days of reactor-off data. A global fit to both theta13 and the total background is performed by analyzing the observed neutrino rate as a function of the non-oscillated expected rate for different reactor power conditions. The result presented in this talk is fully consistent with the one already published by Double Chooz. As they both yield almost the same precision, this work stands as a prove of the reliability of the background estimates and the oscillation analysis of the experiment.
Double Chooz: results towards the near detector phase
P. Novella, for the Double Chooz collaboration
Physics , 2014,
Abstract: Since the first indication in 2011 of a non-vanishing value of $\theta_{13}$ using reactor neutrinos by Double Chooz, this collaboration has developed new analyses leading to an increased precision on $\theta_{13}$ and different cross-checks of the oscillation results. Beyond the update of the analysis based on neutron captures on Gd in 2012, Double Chooz has also released a consistent measurement of $\theta_{13}$ by means of neutron captures on H. The combination of the n-Gd and n-H data samples, as well as 7.23 days of reactor off data, in a global rate+shape analysis yields $\sin^22\theta_{13} = 0.109\pm 0.035$. This measurement has been validated with a new background-model-independent approach, which compares the observed and expected neutrino rates as a function of reactor power. This Reactor Rate Modulation analysis yields $\sin^22\theta_{13} = 0.102\pm 0.043$ when combining the n-Gd and n-H samples. The Double Chooz collaboration is currently developing a new analysis increasing the signal-to-background ratio while reducing the background and detection systematics. This new approach is being prepared as a first step of the new phase of the experiment that will begin in summer 2014 with the operation of a near detector.
Double Chooz: Searching for theta13 with reactor neutrinos
P. Novella, for the Double Chooz collaboration
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment is meant to search for the neutrino mixing angle theta13 taking advantage of the neutrinos generated at the nuclear power plant of Chooz. Double Chooz relies on neutrino flux measurements at two different locations, the so-called far and near detectors, although the first phase runs only with the far detector. The commissioning of the far detector started in January 2011 and first results improving the current limit on theta13 are expected by the summer 2011. The status of the Double Chooz experiment is presented.

Shell Trumpets from Western Mexico

Papers from the Institute of Archaeology , 1991, DOI: 10.5334/pia.16
Abstract: Marine shells have been used as musical instruments in almost all parts of the world (Izikowitz 1935), including Mesoamerica, where large univalves, also called conch shells in the literature, had a utilitarian function as trumpets. Their use is well documented in most cultural areas of Mesoamerica, as in Western Mexico, through their various occurrences in archaeological contexts and museums collections.
Beyond the Bounds: Twentieth-century Variations on the Myth of Alcestis Perché nessuno come me ha raggiunto il suo limite : variazioni novecentesche sul mito di Alcesti
Novella Primo
Between , 2011,
Abstract: The study is focused on the comparison of some modern imitations (written by Rilke, Yourcenar, Savinio…) of the classical myth of Alcestis, the woman who sacrifices her life in order to save her husband, as it is told in Euripides’s prototype (438 B.C.). The semantic of limen, considered both as threshold and border, becomes, in this paper, an interpretative key to go through the deep meaning of the texts that have been analysed. The intertextual comparative perspective adopted has therefore the aim of considering the myth in a dynamic way, thanks also to the contribution of psychoanalysis, especially of Lacan’s seminars where many important theories about the theme of sacrifice in literature and about the condition of being entre deux , that is between life and death, are explained thanks to some quotations taken from Alcestis’s myth. The study also illustrates how, in the twentieth-century performances and poems, there is a contamination with other classical stories, like Pygmalion’s one. Moreover all the modern rewritings suggest different solutions to the catabasis and especially to the rescue from death of Alcestis who comes back to life veiled and often voiceless. In all the myth’s variations the happy ending is indeed only partial because it is impossible to return truly among the living for whom has directly experienced death which is an implacable necessity. The Convergence Programme and Economic and Monetary Union: A Compromise Plan or Structural Reforms?
Joaquim Novella
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 1993,
Abstract: In order to achieve the objectives of the Economic and Monetary Union agreed in Maastricht in 1991, the Spanish government prepared a Convergence Plan that the author analyses and defines as insufficient and optimistic given the recessive scene at present. The central idea of the debate is if the attainment of the basic requisites necessary for European union limits itself to the application of compromise policies or if they constitute specific structural reforms of greater substance. In this regard, the author examines the evolution of the model of economic development carried out in Spain three decades ago defined by the protection of markets, a cheap and poorlyskilledlabourforce and inefficent management policies. Also, he observes thesolutions offered to the succesive crises and affirms that, in spite of the changes introduced, they do not treat in any depth those transformations that the new international environment demands. He concludes with a call for political and social dialogue that will allow us to undertake the means necessary with an equal share ofthe social cost that this might involve.
