Abstract: A coprological survey to determine the influence of some intrinsic factors (breed, age, and sex) on the infection by helminth parasites in equine livestock (=418) under an oceanic climate area (NW Spain) was conducted. Faecal samples were individually collected and analyzed by the coprological techniques. The main strongylid genera identified were Trichonema and Cyalocephalus spp (small strongyles) and Strongylus and Triodontophorus (large strongyles). The prevalence of gastrointestinal nematode was 89% (95% CI 86, 92) and 1% cestoda (0, 2). The percentage of horses with strongyloid parasites was 89% (86, 92), 11% (8, 14) for Parascaris, and 3% (1, 5) for Oxyuris. The highest prevalence for ascariosis was observed in the youngest horses (<3 years), for oxyurosis in the >10 years animals, and for strongylosis in the 3–10 years ones. Females were significantly more parasitized than males. A negative correlation between the age and the egg-excretion of ascarids and strongyles was recorded. The autochthonous and the English Pure Blood horses were the most parasitized. We concluded that the infections by helminths, especially the strongyloids, are significantly common in the region, so that greater importance should be given to this situation.

With the purpose of describing mononuclear-cell subpopulations existing innon-fertile men's sperm with leucoytospermia, a descriptive study was performed with 78 men members of infertile couples, with leucocytospermia, peroxidase-positive leucocytes greater than or equal to 1 x 10(6) leucocytes/ml., who attended the office of the National Endocrinology Institute (37) and the office of Abel Santamaría Cuadrado Hospital in Pinar del Río (41), 1999-2000. The study was carried out with antibodies which recognized different cellular particulars, such as macrofages, B cells, some activated T cells, all T lymphocytes, NK cells, CD8+ lymphocytes, CD4+ lymphocytes. The results were different from other revised studies, showing predominance of T cells and antigen-presenting cells. The presence of both types of cells suggesed the chances of establishing an inflammatory reaction with harmful cytocine release for the spermogram parameters, and the mobilisation of cells with the same effects, not quantified routinely. In different populations, where the prevalence of infections and toxic and irritant habits causing leucoytospermia are very different, much difference can be seen in sperm cellular patterns.

Abstract: alzheimer's disease and other dementias can cause in caregivers diverse feelings, processes and mournings, which are lived in different ways. this occurs both in psychological and actual death. by using a methodology of a qualitative research, we look through some different cases of caregivers whose relatives are living in an institution. we conclude that not only the actual death can cause a sense of mourning in caregivers of dementia patients, but also the inexorable loss of capacities and eventually their "psychological" death. this death also possibly affects the professional caregivers because it shows them their vulnerability as human beings. this type of death makes them to think about the possibility of a death in life.

Alzheimer's disease and other dementias can cause in caregivers diverse feelings, processes and mournings, which are lived in different ways.
Locating a service facility and a rapid transit line

Computer Science , 2011,
Abstract: In this paper we study a facility location problem in the plane in which a single point (facility) and a rapid transit line (highway) are simultaneously located in order to minimize the total travel time of the clients to the facility, using the $L_1$ or Manhattan metric. The rapid transit line is represented by a line segment with fixed length and arbitrary orientation. The highway is an alternative transportation system that can be used by the clients to reduce their travel time to the facility. This problem was introduced by Espejo and Ch\'ia in [7]. They gave both a characterization of the optimal solutions and an algorithm running in $O(n^3\log n)$ time, where $n$ represents the number of clients. In this paper we show that the Espejo and Ch\'ia's algorithm does not always work correctly. At the same time, we provide a proper characterization of the solutions with a simpler proof and give an algorithm solving the problem in $O(n^3)$ time.

Abstract: Aim: Advanced age and fragility often lead to dependence, making caregiver assistance necessary for performing the activities of daily living. Patients with diabetes are characterized by an elevated presence of comorbidities and subsequent frailty—a relevant consideration when making decisions regarding treatment goals. Health professionals may overlook the caregiver experience when assessing the circumstances surrounding frail elderly patients with diabetes, but this factor can have a large impact on relevant caregiver and patient outcomes. Methods: An observational, retrospective study was carried out to assess the impact of improved management in diabetes on caregiver burden. We assessed patients’ performance of activities of daily living using the Barthel scale. Our primary outcome was caregiver burden, as assessed using the Zarit scale. Results: At baseline, 81.4% of the caregivers reported severe overburden (>55 points on the Zarit scale). At three months, the proportion of caregivers reporting this level of burden had dropped to 76.7% and remained stable at six months (77.1%). In contrast, 8.5% of the caregivers reported moderate overburden (47 to 55 points) at baseline, compared to 13.3% at three months and 12.5% at six. The proportion of caregivers reporting no overburden (<47 points) was similar at all time points (10.2%, 10.0% and 10.4% at baseline, three months and six months, respectively). Conclusions: Caregiver burden remained persistently high, decreasing only slightly after six months.
On the number of radial orderings of planar point sets

Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: Given a set $S$ of $n$ points in the plane, a \emph{radial ordering} of $S$ with respect to a point $p$ (not in $S$) is a clockwise circular ordering of the elements in $S$ by angle around $p$. If $S$ is two-colored, a \emph{colored radial ordering} is a radial ordering of $S$ in which only the colors of the points are considered. In this paper, we obtain bounds on the number of distinct non-colored and colored radial orderings of $S$. We assume a strong general position on $S$, not three points are collinear and not three lines---each passing through a pair of points in $S$---intersect in a point of $\R^2\setminus S$. In the colored case, $S$ is a set of $2n$ points partitioned into $n$ red and $n$ blue points, and $n$ is even. We prove that: the number of distinct radial orderings of $S$ is at most $O(n^4)$ and at least $\Omega(n^3)$; the number of colored radial orderings of $S$ is at most $O(n^4)$ and at least $\Omega(n)$; there exist sets of points with $\Theta(n^4)$ colored radial orderings and sets of points with only $O(n^2)$ colored radial orderings.
