História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702006000400013
Abstract: although the nineteenth century saw numerous attempts to deter the slave trade, it was also the period when brazil imported the greatest number of slaves in its history. the conditions under which slaves were transported, worked, and lived were largely responsible for their state of health. yet this topic barely makes an appearance in the field of history, and many disputed points remain to be settled. my research cross-references sources and topics in order to gather data on the hygienic lives of nineteenth-century slaves. by analyzing archival documents from hospitals, notary public offices, and church bodies, iconographic sources, and the medical literature, i have retrieved information that can be used towards writing a history of the healthcare system available to slaves.

História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702000000400003
Abstract: in a sketch of the life history of poet manuel bandeira (1886-1968) from the moment his tuberculosis was diagnosed, the article analyzes the various phases bandeira went through in his experience with the illness. knowing that one is afflicted with a serious disease impels efforts to preserve one?s identity, to adjust to living with the disease, and to mobilize resources to fight it. living with the progression of a disease in fact prompts the afflicted individual to undertake a systematic reconstruction of his or her identity. as the article shows, poetry was the instrument bandeira used to reshape his own self-image.
Representa??es sociais da tuberculose: estigma e preconceito
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102007000800007
Abstract: social representations of tuberculosis are analyzed at the turn of the 20th century, focusing on aspects associated to feelings and contradictory manifestations awakened by the disease. the romanticized pattern of experience of this disease was replaced by a more naturalistic vision, though the stigmas and prejudices are reinforced. to this day it is possible to detect some aspects about the way of perceiving tuberculosis, which marked its presence in the past. the persistence of the stigmatization of tuberculosis and of the people who suffer from it consists in a serious obstacle to the disease's control nowadays.
