Abstract: effect of extrusion on protein and starch bioavailability in corn and lima bean flour blends. extrusion is used to produce crunchy expanded foods, such as snacks. the nutritional impact of this process has not been studied sufficiently. in this study, in vitro and in vivo protein and starch bioavailability was evaluated in both raw and extruded corn (zea mays)(c) and lima bean (phaseolus lunatus)(b) flour blends, prepared in 75c/25b and 50c/ 50b (p/p) proportions. these were processed with a brabender extruder at 160°c, 100 rpm and 15.5% moisture content. proximate composition showed that in the extruded products protein and ash contents increased whereas the fat level decreased. in vitro protein digestibility was higher in the extrudates (82%) than in the raw flours (77%). potentially available starch and resistant starch contents decreased with extrusion. the in vitro assays indicated that extrusion improved protein and starch availability in the studied blends. in vivo bioavailability was evaluated using the rice weevil (sithophilus oryzae) as a biological model. the most descriptive biomarkers of the changes suggested by the in vivo tests were body protein content (increased by extrusion) and intestinal α-amylase activity (decreased by processing). overall, results suggest that extrusion notably increases the nutritional quality of corn and lima bean flour blends

Abstract: in the middle ages medical texts the notes about personal hygiene are scarce and they are dedicated to the kings or the aristocracy. in his work regimen sanitatis ad inclytum regen aragorum, arnaldo de vilanova underlines six things that are necessary for cleanliness, among which he includes his well-known proposition conservatio juventute preservatio senectute. we compared his text with those from other authors with references to the issue and, once examined, vilanova? s work stands out. doctors in the middle ages were already interested in aging and propositions considered today as modern are found described in various works from that period.
Niveles de glicemia y de hemoglobina glicosilada en un grupo de pacientes diabéticos tipo II de la Península de Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Jiménez-Navarrete,Manuel; Ruiz-Pérez,Leonor;
Revista Costarricense de Ciencias Médicas , 2002,
Abstract: to determine fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin (hba1c) levels in a group of type two diabetic patients of a costarican rural zone, it was performed a descriptive investigation with 443 diabetic patients of the chronic patients program of the anexion hospital, costa rica during year 2000. the fasting plasma glucose general average was 158,02 mg/dl, ranges 70-110 mg/dl (24,4%), 141-180 mg/dl (21,7%), >/= 201 mg/dl (23,4%). the less body mass index, the less level of fasting plasmaglucose. hba1c was measured in 61,1% of those patients and the general average was 8,91%, with ranges of 31,7% (hba1c 4%-7%), 34,3% (hba1c 7,1%-9,9%) and 34% (10% or more). the comparison between giycemia and hba1c was oniy good in the 84% patients with hba1c (5.9% or less), 18% with hba1c (6%), 8,3% with (hba1c 7%),9% with (hba1c 8%), 10.7% with hba1c (9%), none with hba1c (10% and 12% or more), the 18.4% of the diabetics with 0-4 years of diagnosis of dm have less that 7% of hba1c and the 20.3% of diabetics with 10 or more years of dm diagnosis have 9% or more of hba1c. this is the first study that measure fasting plasma glucose and hba1c in costa rica, so we cannot make comparativa analysis. hba1c report is preferable to monitor the metabolic control of the diabetic population, because the confiability of glycemic reports are influence by many factors that jeopardice the compliance of the diabetics.

The following article describes a technique performed by the same surgeon in 20 patients, for intraoperative cholangiography during the course of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In the era of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the intraoperative cholangiography is an effective method to diagnose lithiasis of the common bile duct as well as to explain any anatomic doubts. This enables us to treat the patient with only one procedure by means of the laparoscopic techniques of exploration of the extrahepatic bile duct tract and take the necessary caution to avoid any possible iatrogenic injury that may be caused. The technique described here, resulted in 100% of complete cholangiographies and represents a simple method that not only allows the diagnosis of the bile duct pathology, but also helps the surgeon who is training in laparoscopic techniques, acquire the necessary abilities.
Comparative study of the antimutagenic properties of vitamins C and E against mutation induced by norfloxacin

BMC Pharmacology , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2210-8-2
Abstract: Background Norfloxacin like other fluoroquinolones, is known to be mutagenic for Salmonella typhimurium TA102 strain. This mutagenic effect is due to free oxygen radicals (ROS), because it is inhibited by antioxidants such as β-carotene and naturally occurring antioxidants of Roheo discolor and other plants. The aim of this work was to evaluate combination therapy with norfloxacin and vitamins C and E, to reduce the possible genotoxic risk associated with fluoroquinolones. Method The antimutagenicity of α-tocoferol (Vitamin E) and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) against norfloxacin-induced mutation was evaluated on S. typhimurium TA102, using the aroclor-1254-induced S9 rat liver homogenate. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) a measure of the bactericidal effect of norfloxacin, was obtained in vitro by the plate dilution method. Results Vitamin E (0.5 mg per Petri dish) induced a statistically significant reduction (P < 0.001) in the mutagenicity of norfloxacin, whereas Vitamin C (1 mg per Petri dish) had no such effect. Neither of these vitamins altered the MIC for norfloxacin against 25 uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli. Conclusion These results suggest that Vitamin E is a potent antimutagen that would be worthwhile being used in conjunction with fluoroquinolone treatment. The minimal antimutagenic effect of Vitamin C observed under these experimental conditions may have been because Vitamin C in the Ames test induces a Fenton reaction, and if divalent cations are present, it can act as a pro-oxidant rather than an antioxidant. Ascorbic acid should be further evaluated in the presence of different divalent cations concentrations.

Abstract: objective: to analyze the adaptation process of women internally displaced to the city and the relationship between displacement and their self-perceived main health problems. methods: a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study was carried out by means of semi-structured individual interviews with a maximum variation sample of 25 internally displaced women. a narrative content analysis was conducted with mixed generation of categories and data segmentation by age and themes. the area under study consisted of five localities in the city of bogotá (colombia). results: according to the interviewed women's discourses, their adaptation to city life depended on the new socioeconomic and environmental conditions and the psychosocial impact of displacement on the family. precarious economic conditions forced them to live in an unhealthy environment and, occasionally, to adopt the role of head of household. in this role, many of these women, particularly young women, faced great difficulties in ensuring that the family's needs were met. young women and teenagers reported behavioral changes due to displacement, including reproduction of violence in the home. the main self-perceived health problems among displaced women were mental health, access to food, infections and gynecological alterations. displaced women identified the main factors hindering their access to health services as their economic situation and home responsibilities. conclusions: displaced women face new environmental and family challenges that negatively affect their health and access to healthcare. specific interventions aimed at displaced women are required to foster better health through access to work and long -term socioeconomic stability.
