Abstract: This paper begins with two questions: Is Psychology a profession? Is Psychology a science? The answerto the first one is that it should not be a profession; to the second, that we are still far from becoming ascience. On the basis of 19 statements, a series of queries and doubts on the scientific status of contemporaryPsychology are suggested. It is proposed that Psychology must necessarily consider neurosciencesand ethology as sources of knowledge; that philosophical reflection allowing conceptual definitionsmust be a priority; that the abusive glorification of experimental method has to come to an end becausethe tool cannot solve the conceptual difficulties; that the traditional emphasis on the factual dimension ofresearch and the minute attention to the theoretical and conceptual dimensions are detrimental to Psychology;and that it is urgent to create new research methods allowing access to the most refined forms ofhuman behavior, such as art.

Scientific evidence for the relationship between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease  [PDF]
Alonso A. Rosado, Hernández G. Marcos, Pérez R. Gómez
World Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases (WJCD) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/wjcd.2013.34A009
Abstract: A lot of clinical studies have investigated the possible association between periodontitis and coronary heart disease (CHD). Some of them indicate the existence of an epidemiologic association between these two concepts, and support previous investigations that have found that chronic periodontal inflammation, persistent bacterial infection with the presence of major periodontal pathogens, deep periodontal pockets. The number of missing teeth and other periodontal markers, seem to be important risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, it will be required to carry out better controlled and larger studies to identify if these biological mechanisms are responsible for these increased risks and to provide a convincing support of a casual association and to determine if periodontal treatments could prevent CHD. Since periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease are common, their association has a significant public health importance. They share common risk factors, such as increasing age, smoking, stress, socioeconomic status and body fat metabolism, and that is the reason why there could be significant bias.
Estromatolitos de aguas profundas en la Formación Los Molles (Neuquén, Argentina): ?chimeneas de metano en el fondo marino jurásico?
Revista de la Asociaci?3n Argentina de Sedimentolog?-a , 2001,
Abstract: a stromatolitic bioherm embedded in deep-water shales and marls of the los molles formation was found in the sw of the neuquén basin (argentina). the neuquén basin is located in west central argentina and eastern chile, between 36-40o ls. it was formed in the late triassic by continental extension and evolved as a backarc basin from the middle jurassic. it was infilled by an upper triassic to early tertiary succession of marine and continental deposits included in different sedimentary cycles, formed in response to relative sea level variations and tectonic pulses. the los molles formation was deposited in response to the first marine transgression in the neuquén basin in the early jurassic. it is made up of dark shales, silts and sandstone turbidites. it overlies shallow marine clastic and carbonate deposits of pliensbachian age (chachil and sierra de chacaico formations), and it is overlain by tidal clastic deposits of bajocian age (lajas formation). a series of late triassic synrift depocentres were shallowly buried under these units in the studied area, which also unconformably overly paleozoic granitic or metamorphic basement (fig. 1). the described stromatolitic bioherm is located to the sw of the locality of zapala, in southern neuquén, in the area of the sierra de chacaico (fig. 1). it is 15 m thick and 60 m in diameter, and made up by individual stromatolites averaging 2 meters across and 1.5 m high (fig. 2). they show variable geometries, including tabular and columnar shapes in the lower, micrite-rich, part of the buildup, and domed shapes in the upper, cement-dominated, part. these individual stromatolites form a discrete bioherm, wrapped as a whole by an outer coating of laminations which locally shows very steep to vertical margins (fig. 2b). the individual stromatolites are made up of encased laminated calcitic layers, locally oversteepened, vertical or even overturned (fig. 3a). the microscropic structure shows the bulk of the lamination consisting o
La etnografía como método integrativo Etnography as an integrative method
Introduction: Ethnography is understood from three perspectives: approach, methodology and text. In the health field, ethnography can be used not only from the standpoint of the research process, but also from the very instances of medical consultation, diagnose and treatment. The pacient appreciates the fact of being heard and understood as a subject who has her/his own story and is involved in a particular culture related to her/his own status and to the effects a caused by life experiences. Methods: Analysis of the literature related to ethnography, participanting observation and an relationship between health and qualitative research. Results: There is a diversity of opinions and attitudes about ethnography, its validity and usefulness as well as in considerations related to its method and the techniques that nourish it. Ethnography is an integrative approach that may resorty to multiple tools for collecting, analyzingand interpretingthe data. Therefore, ethnography constitutes an option for the physician when performing individual assessment. Conclusions: Ethnography provides an opportunity to approach the reality of an individual or group of individuals in order to obtain information about the matter under investigation, its understanding and interpretation.
