The Association Between Serum Chemerin Concentration and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Abstract: Background: Adipokines are proteins which are secreted from the adipose tissue. These groups of proteins are involved in the control of metabolism. Chemerin is one of these adipokines with different proposed biological roles. Serum levels of chemerin have been associated with increased body mass index, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the association between serum chemerin concentrations and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Methods: This case-control study was performed in Taleghani Hospital in Tehran, Iran during 2011. On 45 patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome and 45 normal individuals as the control group. The participants were selected by easy given sampling method. Body mass index, fasting chemerin and serum insulin concentrations were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELIZA) method. Fasting serum glucose was measured by the enzyme-calorimetric method and insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was measured by the calculation of relevant equation. Data was analyzed using independent t-test and Pearsons correlation coefficient by SPSS version 18. Results: Serum chemerin, insulin, and glucose concentrations were significantly higher in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome than the control group. There was no significant correlation between body mass index, serum levels of insulin, glucose, HOMA-IR, or chemerin in cases and controls. Conclusion: This study showed that serum chemerin levels increase in polycystic ovarian syndrome. The findings also suggest that changes in chemerin serum levels could be considered as a criterion for polycystic ovarian syndrome.
On the Wear Behavior of Cyanoacrylate in Presence of Nano-Sized SiO2  [PDF]

Abstract: Cyanoacrylate adhesive and its composites have been widely used in industry and dentistry. According to literature survey done by the authors, there are few papers concentrated on role of nano-sized particles on wear behavior of cyanoacrylate glue. Thus the main goal of current research focused on clarifying the role of nano-sized SiO2 on wear behavior of cyanoacrylate. Pin-on-disk wear test, SEM imaging and microhardness test was utilized to investigate wear performance of cyanoacrylate and its nanocomposites with SiO2. The results indicated that SiO2 nano powders can reduce wear rate of cyanoacrylate and change its wear mechanism. It was also shown that surface hardness of cyanoacrylate is increased by addition of nano-sized SiO2.
Isomalt Production by Cloning, Purifying and Expressing of the MDH Gene From Pseudomonas fluorescens DSM 50106 in Different Strains of E. coli

Abstract: A NADH-dependent mannitol dehydrogenase gene (mtlD) was cloned from Pseudomonas fluorescens, subcloned into an expression vector (pDEST110) and entered into different strains of E. coli to compare their protein expression and the enzyme specific activity. Purifications were accomplished by Ni2+-NTA affinity chromatography. Using this approach, the efficiency of purification process significantly increased (up to 90%) so that the purified enzyme gave a sharp single band (55 kDa) in SDS-PAGE. The results showed that among the strains, BL21 (DE3) plysS exhibited the maximum expression level of MDH(mannitol dehydrogenase) (11 mg L-1). Results from activity assay with fructose as substrate also showed that in this strain the specific activity of 63 U mg-1 protein monitored for the enzyme, the record not reported before. Resazurin staining also indicated that the enzyme reduced fructose, whereas oxidized other substrates including mannitol, sorbitol and arabitol under optimal assay condition. From HPLC analysis it was showed for the first time that the enzyme could convert substrate isomaltulose to the specific products, GPM and GPS. Interestingly, because of the high specificity of the enzyme for substrate, the method can be used as an alternative approach to substitute non-specific conventional method of isomalt production.

Abstract: Uterovaginal malformations, occur in 0.16% of women and contribute to the problems of infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, amenorrhea and a poor outcome in pregnancy. True diverticulum is an exceedingly rare anomaly and is like a tubular formation connected to uterine cavity that ends in a cul-de sac and It is not classified as any of mullerian duct anomalies. In this article a case of uterine diverticulum rupture due to pregnancy in a 19 years old woman with nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain is reported. Although rare, in complicated pregnancy we should think to genital tract anomalies.
Bayesian Estimation Based on Rayleigh Progressive Type II Censored Data with Binomial Removals

Abstract: This study considers the estimation problem for the parameter and reliability function of Rayleigh distribution under progressive type II censoring with random removals, where the number of units removed at each failure time has a binomial distribution. We use the maximum likelihood and Bayesian procedures to obtain the estimators of parameter and reliability function of Rayleigh distribution. We also construct the confidence intervals for the parameter of Rayleigh distribution. Monte Carlo simulation method is used to generate a progressive type II censored data with binomial removals from Rayleigh distribution, and then these data are used to compute the point and interval estimations of the parameter and compare both the methods used with different random schemes. 1. Introduction The Rayleigh distribution provides a population model which is useful in several areas of statistics. In the literature, many researcher studied properties of the Rayleigh distribution, particularly in life testing and reliability. Life testing experiments often deal with censored sample in order to estimate the parameters involved in the life distribution. The cumulative distribution function (CDF), probability density function (PDF), and the reliability function of the Rayleigh distribution with parameter are respectively. Inferences for in the Rayleigh distribution have been discussed by several authors. Harter and Moore [1] derived an explicit form for the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of based on type II censored data. Moreover, Bayesian estimation and prediction problems for the based on doubly censored sample have been considered by Fernández [2] and Raqab and Madi [3]. Wu et al. [4] have derived the Bayesian estimator and prediction intervals based on progressively type II censored samples. A recent account on progressive censoring schemes can be obtained in the monograph by Balakrishnan and Aggarwala [5] or in the excellent review article by Balakrishnan [6]. Suppose that units are placed on a life test and the experimenter decides beforehand quantity , the number of units, to be failed. Now at the time of the first failure, of the remaining surviving units are randomly removed from the experiment. Continuing, at the time of the second failure, of the remaining units are randomly drawn from the experiment. Finally, at the time of the th failure, all the remaining surviving units are removed from the experiment. Note that, in this scheme, are all prefixed. Abstract: This study is focused on the role of nano hydroxyapatite particles on the mechanical properties of PMMA/HA nanocomposites. In order to achieve a proper and homogeneous distribution of HA particles in the polymer matrix, mixer milling process was applied. Wear, compression and three-point bending tests were conducted. It was observed that wear rate decreased by increasing in HA content in both atmosphere and artificial saliva. The results of compression tests showed that the addition of 2.5 percent HA to PMMA promoted ultimate compressive strength, yield strength and modulus while caused to decrease elongation at break. Also it was elucidated that addition of HA more than 2.5 wt.% caused a decrease in both ultimate compressive strength and compression yield strength and an increase in elongation at break. The results of three-point bending tests on the PMMA cements containing 2.5 percent HA demonstrated the maximum bending strength value and modulus among all the HA containing formulations. However there was no direct proportionality between the results of bending tests and the HA content and the addition of HA to PMMA (up to 10 wt.%) did not change the bending properties significantly.
Gonadotropin and Testosterone hormone’s serum levels and partial deletions in the AZFc region in Iranian oligozoospermia infertile males  [PDF]

Abstract: To investigate the relation of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and Testosterone serum levels with partial deletions in the AZFc region in Iranian oligozoospermia males. Material and methods: thirty infertile oligozoospermia and 52 Iranian fertile men included. The hormonal assays were measured by the Radioimmunoassay (RIA). Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (M-PCR) using eight sequence-tagged site (STS) markers were measured on the Yq11 chromosome. Results: The mean of FSH and LH levels in all oligozoospermia males were higher than fertile men (p < 0.001) and testosterone was lower significantly (p < 0.001). Five patients showed partial deletions in AZFc region (four had gr/gr and one had b2/b3 deletions). Six fertile men showed partial deletions (five gr/gr and one b2/b3) with higher level of FSH, LH in their group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: According to high incidence of partial deletions in the AZFc region among Iranian oligozoospermia males, hormonal assay and molecular screening should be advised before considering for ART treatments.
Patient Dignity and Related Factors: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis Study

Abstract: Introduction: Dignity appears as a duty in ethics codes and as a right in human rights framework. The aim of this meta-synthesis study was to conduct a systematic review of dignity concept and its related factors in years 2000-2010. Methods: In this meta-synthesis study, a systematic review was conducted and qualitative articles related to dignity concept in Medline, Elsevier and Ovid in the period from 2000 to 2010 were selected. To facilitate the search, the term "Patient dignity" was used by MeSH system in the database Medline. Then, articles that exactly had studied patient dignity and its related factors, and dignity concept was mentioned in their title and also were published in English, were selected for analysis and were compared. Results: 620 qualitative articles related to dignity concept were founded and 64 articles were in close relation to dignity concept which included 21 articles from Medline, 3 articles from Elsevier and 40 articles from Ovid database. In general, from 64 qualitative articles in the period from 2000 to 2010, the full texts of 16 articles were selected and reviewed in an interpretive and logical manner. The results indicate that dignity is a complex and multi-dimensional concept and multiple factors are related to it which can promote or threaten it. The results of the present study also revealed categories of dignity concept, dignity dimensions, dignity promoting and dignity threatening factors. Conclusion: The key factors identified in the present study which are related to preservation and promoting patient dignity can be applied by doctors and nurses in taking care of different patients and they can also be used in conducting future studies about dignity.
Effect of Imatinib on the Oogenesis and Pituitary -Ovary Hormonal Axis in Female Wistar Rat

Abstract: Background: Imatinib mesylate, a small-molecular analog of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)that potently inhibits tyrosine kinase activities of Bcr–Abl, PDGFR-β, PDGFR-α, c-Fms, Argand c-kit, is one of the novel molecularly targeted drugs being introduced into cancer therapy.We tested the effect of imatinib on the ovarian histological structure and the concentration ofestrogen and progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)in the serum of female Wistar rats.Materials and Methods: Two groups of rats (180 ± 15 grams) were gavaged with doses of 50and 100 mg/kg body weight imatinib dissolved in distilled water for 14 days. The control groupreceived sterile water. On day 7, after termination of the treatment, blood serum concentrationwas measured with the radioimmunoassay (RIA) method. Also, sections (5 μm thick) of ovariesstained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) were investigated histologically.Results: Progesterone concentration in the experimental groups was increased (p<0.001),estrogen and FSH concentrations were decreased (p<0.01), and the LH concentration decreasedbut was not statistically different in comparison with the control group. The weight of ovaries andnumber of atretic follicles in the experimental groups was increased compared with the controlgroup (p<0.05). The diameter of corpus lutea were increased but the number of corpus luteadecreased in both experimental groups (p<0.01).Conclusion: These findings suggest that administration of imatinib may have profound effects onfemale fertility.
