Interciencia , 2009,
Abstract: this study reports the results of a cross-sectional survey carried out in 2005 to investigate the epidemiology of intestinal parasitism among the suruí indians, brazilian amazon. a total of 519 stool samples were examined by zinc-sulphate-flotation and formol-ether-sedimentation. entamoeba histolytica/e. dispar-positive samples were further tested by elisa. thirty-six percent of the subjects were positive for one more helminth species; 70.7% harbored at least one protozoan species. the most frequent helminth was hymenolepis nana (29.5%). nematodes were rare (hookworm= 3.3%; strongyloides stercoralis= 0.2%). capillaria sp. was identified in 5.2% of the samples and one case of parasitism by dipylidium caninum was detected. prevalence of giardia duodenalis and e. histolytica/e. dispar was 16.2% and 12.3%, respectively. based on elisa, the prevalence of e. histolytica infection was 3.2%. the overall prevalence of intestinal nematode infections depicted in this study was surprisingly low compared to what is often reported for other indigenous populations in the brazilian amazon. it is argued that the prevalence of helminths in the suruí are associated with anthelminthic mass treatment schemes undertaken by the indian health service, in the absence of other measures. the authors propose that a special program aimed at controlling intestinal parasitism in indigenous communities should step beyond the top-down distribution of medication, but rather be designed in collaboration with the target population, encompassing education, better housing, alternative sewage disposal systems and safe water supply to all villagers.

Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86821999000400005
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the parasitological contamination of vegetables to be consumed raw and commercialized in niteroi and rio de janeiro cities. we studied 128 samples of vegetables ? lettuce (lactuca sativa) and watercress (nasturtium officinale) ? from supermarkets, greengrocer shops and self-service restaurants. only 6.2% of the samples were positive for parasitic structures with morphological aspects similar to those of animal parasites. we detected acharids, acharid eggs, insects, nematode larvae and ciliated protozoa in most of the samples (96.1%), including those from restaurants. this high percentage suggests a risk of human infection since parasite structures capable of infecting man may exist in association with these agents.

Abstract: the so-called contingent valuation method is frequently used to quantify the benefits brought about by the implementation of a project with environmental impacts. this method uses data collected in field researches conducted among the potential beneficiaries of the project. the objective of this paper is to show how to use information contained in existing studies for similar projects as a possible way to reduce the costs of the evaluation process. the paper proposes that such information, which supplies preliminary indicators for some crucial parameters, allows to narrow the scope of choices among projects of the same type in new places. the type of project selected for analysis is the construction of a sewage system in several middle-size cities in brazil.

Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532000000300010
Abstract: amorphous potassium pentacyanonitrosylruthenate (ii) was synthesized and characterized by uv, ir, x-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. electron spin resonance spectroscopy reveals the presence of paramagnetic ruthenate (i) complexes and no2 radicals in the x-irradiated diamagnetic salt. spin-hamiltonian parameters of the [ru(cn)5no]3- complex (g^= 2.0064, a^ (14n) = 60.7 mhz, g|| = 1.999, a|| (14n) = 77.3 mhz ) support an electron capture in a p* molecular orbital of the nitrosyl group mixed with dxz and dyz ruthenium orbitals as recently predicted by theoretical calculations. silver ions, present as impurities, are reduced to ag(0) by x-irradiation and coordinate to four magnetically equivalent nitrogens in a distorted site, giving rise to a well resolved anisotropic esr powder spectrum.

Abstract: Monoxenous trypanossomatids protozoa are not believed to cause in vivo infection in verte- brate hosts throughout their life cycle. However, there are reports mentioning some cases of HIV- positive patients who have presented opportunistic infections caused by these protozoa. Recently, we have demonstrated the in vitro infection of mouse dermal fibroblasts by these protozoa. The aim of the present work is to investigate the possibility of Crithidia deanei, a endosymbiont-bearing monoxenous trypanossomatid, infect BALB/c mice under or not Dexamethasone treatment. To attend it, distinct gro- ups of adult BALB/c mice were immunosuppressed with 50 mg/kg of Dexamethasone. This immunosuppressor was administered 24 hours before infection and daily, for 15 days after C. deanei inoculation. Control groups: C. deanei–inoculated animals but non-immuno- suppressed and non-inoculated animals but immunosuppressed were also used. Light Microscopy analysis revealed an infection process characterized by the presence of the trypanossomatid inside dermal cells in the groups studied. The experimental inoculation resulted in a non-lethal infection characterized by the presence of the trypanossomatid inside dermal cells in the normal BALB/c mice, but notably, in the C. deanei–inoculated immunosuppressed group. These preliminary results lead to the following conclusions: 1) C. deanei is able to infect normal BALB/c mice; 2) the immunosupressed mice seemed to be more susceptible to the C. deanei infection compared to the control group. Besides C. deanei in dexamethasone-immunosuppressed mice provides a useful model for studies of monoxenous trypanosomatids ‘in vivo’ infection, resembling that one presumably occurring in imunodeficient individuals with AIDS.
