Abstract: two populations of crassostrea iridescens were sampled off mazatlan and in a zone free of anthropogenic activity. the bivalves were collected from february 1992 to february 1993. concentrations of cd, co, cr, cu, fe, mn, ni and zn were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. annual mean values in the sampling zone off mazatlan were higher in co, cu, fe, mn, ni and zn than in the sampling zone free of anthropogenic activity; however, differences were not statistically significant at 95% confidence level. urban discharges in the coastal zone in front of mazatlan city, have little or no heavy metal concentrations dissolved or particulated.

Dos poblaciones de Crassostrea iridescens fueron muestreadas en la zona costera de la ciudad de Mazatlan y en una zona libre de actividad antropogénica. Los bivalvos fueron colectados de febrero de 1992 a febrero de 1993. Concentraciones de Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni y Zn fueron determinados por espectrofotometría de absorción atómica. Los valores medios anuales en la estación de muestreo de la ciudad de Mazatlán fueron mayores en Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni y Zn que los determinados en la zona libre de actividad antropogénica; sin embargo, las diferencias no fueron significativas al nivel de confianza del 95%. Una conclusión es que las descargas urbanas en la zona costera en frente de Mazatlán no tiene, o tiene, bajas concentraciones de metales pesados disueltos o particulados.
Histological effects of Cu2+ to white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Crustacea: Decapoda) juveniles at low salinities

Abstract: juveniles of the white shrimp litopenaeus vannamei were exposed during 25 days to the cu2+ concentration commonly used in mexican shrimp farms, at salinities of 1, 5, and 10 psu, in order to observe possible histological alterations to the antennal glands, midgut, gills and hepatopancreas. survival was 100% in controls and treatments, and no histopathologies were observed in gills, midgut and antennal glands. sloughing of epithelial cells (< 75%), infiltration of hemocytes (< 75%) and reduction in r and b cells (100%) were observed after 10 days in the hepatopancreas of shrimps exposed to cu2+ at the lowest salinity and, to a lower degree, at salinities of 5 and 10 psu. this should be taken into consideration to establish criteria of acceptable water quality for inland aquaculture, because the interaction metal-salinity may induce adverse shrimp responses.

Abstract: abstract litopenaeus vannamei is the most important shrimp species in the traditional fishery of the coastal lagoons of the state of sinaloa (nw mexico), and most of the landings are consumed locally. since these lagoons receive important volumes of agricultural, industrial and urban effluents, consumption of this shrimp could pose risks to human health. the mean content of cd, cu, pb and zn determined in the hepatopancreas of shrimp from commercial landings from six lagoons of sinaloa were higher than those of the muscle. there was a weak correlation between the zn content of the two tissues (p≤0.05) and the correlations were not significant for cd, cu and pb (p>0.1). the concentrations found in the shrimp muscle were comparable or lower than those determined in commercial landings of different crustaceans from other geographic areas. according to our results the consumption of local shrimp poses no risks to human health.

Abstract: the potential of anadara tuberculosa for bioremediation of shrimp farm effluents was evaluated in five field experiments performed in a semi-intensive shrimp farm in sonora (nw mexico), and yielded mean filtration, clearance and biodeposition rates of 33.10 mg/h/g, 0.41 l/h/g and 31.19 mg/h/g, respectively. this study demonstrates that a. tuberculosa adults can remove the particulate matter of a semi-intensive shrimp farms effluents.

Abstract: while normal human eosinophils are destroyed in vitro by virulent entamoeba histolytica, notwhistanding the presence of antibodies and complement, activated eosinophils promptly destroy the parasite although dying also at the end of the process. to study the possible in vivo participation of eosinophils in invasive amebiasis, we compared the induction of experimental amebic abscess of the liver (aal) in gerbils (meriones unguiculatus) previously made eosinophilic through toxocara canis antigen injection and in normal control gerbils. after intraportal inoculation of 105 ameba trophozoites (6 and 24 hr), the ratio of gerbils with aal, as well as the number and size of the microabscesses was comparable in eosinophilic and control gerbils. however, at 96 hr the number and size of the microabscesses were significanly smaller (p<0.05) in eosinophilic gerbils. on the other hand the actuarial aal survival curve up to 45 days post-amebic inoculation was signficantly (p<0.05) shifted to the right in controls. these results suggest that antigen-induced eosinophilia may exert a protective effect against aal in gerbils.

Se realizaron cinco experimentos en una granja de cultivo semi-intensivo de camarón ubicada en Sonora (Noroeste de México) con el fin de verificar in situ el potencial de Anadara tuberculosa para la biorremediación de los efluentes de granjas camaroneras. Se obtuvieron tasas medias de filtración y de clarificación de 33.10 mg/h/g y 0.41 L/h/g y la de biodepositación fue 31.19 mg/h/g. Este estudio demuestra que individuos adultos de A. tuberculosa pueden remover la materia particulada de los efluentes de las granjas camaroneras semi-intensivas.

Abstract: Se realizó una investigación exploratoria a partir de la revisión de artículos y bibliografía especializada sobre el tema, además de la experiencia del colectivo de autores que en su quehacer diario utilizan el consentimiento informado. Se valoró la repercusión del desarrollo científico-técnico en los aspectos éticos de los procedimientos quirúrgicos, específicamente en la toma de decisiones del paciente después de haber sido informado correctamente. Se resalta la importancia del consentimiento informado en la práctica asistencial, en especial en el área de la cirugía, y se analiza la experiencia cubana en la aplicación del consentimiento informado en las investigaciones. Se destacan las limitantes de su uso, como premisa necesaria para iniciar un proceso de perfeccionamiento en su aplicación. An exploratory research was performed from the article reviews and specialized references on this subject in addition to the experience of authors staff that in his daily practice use the written informed consent. The repercussion of scientific-technical development in the surgical procedure ethical features is assessed, specifically in the decision-making by patient after being appropriately informedSignificance of written informed consent is emphasized in assistance practice, especially in surgical area and Cuban experience is analyzed in application of this type of consent in related to researches highlighting the limitations of its use as a necessary premise to start a improvement process in its application.
