Oscar F. Basulto Gallegos

Abstract: background: the absence of epidemic data about the congenital defects in gambia motivated to study the clinical features of the congenital defects and associated factors. objective: to identify epidemic features and associated factors to greater congenital defects, in the educational hospital royal victoria of banjul, from january to june 2008. method: an analytic retrospective study of cases and controls was performed. the universe was constituted by one-thousand sixty seven minors of one year of life. the sample remain conformed by sixty-two patients, infants with greater congenital defects and sixty two controls, healthy infants, of the same sex and born the same month that the cases. the regression coefficients of the independent variables were taken into account as the influence of these in the presence of congenital anomalies, it were considered significant those of smaller probability than 0.05. results: the estimate incidence of congenital defects was of 1:17, with masculine proportion of 1, 06 for one feminine. the wolof ethnic group represented 38,71% of the malformed patients. the cardiovascular apparatus and the central nervous system were the most affected ones constituting 25% and 16,6% respectively. the hyperthermia and anemia in pregnancy presented statistical significance as associated factors to the appearance of greater congenital defects. conclusions: although a high incidence of congenital defects was found, its occurrence was not aberrant or unexpected. the anemia and the hyperthermia in mothers were statistically associated with the presence of congenital defects, but it is needed of most covered studies for an appropriate focus of risk and to establish relationships of causation.

Abstract: Agencies in Iowa have utilized both overhead flashing beacons and stop-sign mounted beacons. Although several studies have shown that overhead flashing beacons are effective, some concerns have been raised about driver confusion. The main concern is that a driver may interpret a multiface flashing beacon with a red indication for their approach as an all-way stop control. As a result, the Iowa DOT has been advocating use of stop-sign mounted beacons rather than overhead flashing beacons. Since little information is available about this countermeasure, data for intersections with (treatment) and without (control) stop-sign mounted beacons were identified and a cross-sectional analysis conducted (due to few confirmable installation dates). Rural stop-controlled intersections with stop-sign mounted beacons in Iowa (USA) were identified (40 in total). Intersection characteristics such as number of approaches, intersection angle etc. were extracted. Additionally, characteristics of individual approaches such as roadway surface (gravel/paved), advanced stop-sign rumble strips, and advance signing were recorded. One or more control locations were manually selected for each treatment intersection based on matching roadway configuration, presence of lighting, advance stop line rumble strips, number of approaches, channelization, traffic volume, and proximity. Propensity scores were estimated to match 40 control locations for comparison. Negative binomial models for different injury combinations at nighttime and daytime were developed with an indicator variable for presence and absence of stop-sign mounted beacons. Presence of stop-sign mounted beacons was associated with a 5% - 54% reduction in nighttime crashes. Injury nighttime crashes decreased by 54% and total nighttime crashes reduced by 18%.
Arbitrage in General Equilibrium  [PDF]
Oscar Varela
Modern Economy (ME) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/me.2012.34051
Abstract: Normal trade in goods assumes two sectors that co-exist for reasons such as comparative advantage and interact via trade. Arbitrage trade in goods assumes two markets that artificially exist and converge via trade. Restoration of the law of one price via arbitrage creates one sector out of two, and in general equilibrium, equalizes opportunity cost of resources used in production. Arbitrage does not occur in a vacuum, such that when the high (low) price of a good decreases (increases) in its artificially segmented market during arbitrage, the supply of the good falls (rises), the resources used intensively in that good earn lower (higher) returns, affecting security prices, and the supply of those resources in that good’s production fall (rise).

Abstract: aimed at determining the use of electronic publications as an information source and, mainly, as a bibliographic support to the research papers generated in the health sector in cuba, a citation analysis of the scientific production published between 2003 and 2006 was made. the analysis focused on five journals of the hygiene and epidemiology discipline. the following variables were analyzed: number of bibliographic references (printed and electronic), the most cited authors and electronic publications in electronic format, language, country, typology and currency. the results showed a predominance of the printed information resources, although there is a growing trend to cite contributions published in electronic format. the cuban electronic scientific journals, accessible through internet, were the most used.

ACIMED , 2008,
We made a research study aimed at finding out the morbidity and mortality rates from bronchopneumonia in "Hermanas Giralt Andrew" Home for the Aged in 1996 and 1997. We conducted a retrospective study which revealed that 41 aged women suffered from this disease, 20 of whom died. Throught 1997, 34 old women suffered from asthma fits and 10 died.
